Nolan's The Odyssey - Potentially could be epic or an epic flop.

Boyfriend is dragging me to go see this slop this weekend. Big Nolan fanboy that is coping about how the movie somehow "isn't woke." He can't comprehend why I think the movie looks bad (not even counting casting choices) and keeps making excuses. I could not be less enthused for a movie. The sacrifices you make for your loved ones...

Unfortunately I just don't see this bombing like people are saying. The ballwashing for Nolan is way too strong (antiwoke Nolan simps still going to see it out of denial and hero worship) and this has turned into some kind of culture war event. Showings have been sold out for months now. My entire FYP right now is 50% people dogging it and 50% leftoids suddenly acting like Rotten Tomatoes critics are god and celebrating that the "far right smear campaign" didn't work. Apparently if you are on the "wrong side of history" if you aren't interested in the movie.

The Troy movie with Brad Pitt didn't depict any gods that I can remember.
Thetis shows up for a minute, but it's left ambiguous whether she's a goddess or not.

You know that Romeo and Juliet movie in the 90s with Leo Dicap that was very fucking weird because of the setting mismatch
"Romeo + Juliet" is one of the only examples I can think of where the approach works. Luhrmann leans in to the unavoidable silliness of staging Shakespeare in a contemporary setting and makes it fun.

also Odysseus doesn't trick the Cyclops, in fact it's essentially a mute monster for the most part
Oh, that's disappointing to hear. There's something I really enjoy about Polyphemus announcing to Odysseus how he doesn't care about the gods or their laws. He chooses to treat the laws of civilization as unnecessary. If he'd just been hospitable to Odysseus during their encounter, he probably wouldn't have ended up awfully maimed. The cyclops isn't an animal; he's closer to a brutish and antisocial human being.

The gods have been completely removed which means that about half of the crucial story beats are missing.
Oh, come on! So, what, Odysseus takes a decade to get home just because of bad luck? If there aren't any gods, then where the heck did the cyclopes come from?

Sinon is in the movie taking the role of Achilles
Can you elaborate on this? What aspects of Achilles does Sinon take on?

Yeah it's really weird because there is a part where the Cyclops starts mumbling to itself AFTER Odysseus and company have stabbed its eye out and Eurylochus points that out and says "It speaks!" and suggests that maybe they can reason with it but Odysseus points out that it's kinda late for that. It's so odd, it would've honestly been better if Nolan had just left it as a regular mute monster but to briefly introduce that aspect of the character and then just drop it is so weird. And of course there is no "Nobody" scene because as far as the movie shows the Cyclops lives by itself on the island.

And while I'm at it, Eurylochus has also been changed (besides, you know, being played by a jeet), he's supposed to be kind of a dickhead who constantly doubts Odysseus but the movie makes him into the voice of reason a lot of the time when Odysseus is being a cretin.

No idea, I think we're meant to assume it's just a regular monster rather than a rational creature born of a god. This "no gods" shtick really harms the movie because on one hand Nolan wants to keep things "grounded" but on the other hand it's the Odyssey, how fucking grounded can you possibly make it?

As far as "bad luck" goes, movie has Odysseus and his crew take a different path from Troy where instead of going via the regular route west along with the other Greeks, they go east as a shortcut. Except that east of Troy is the Anatolian heartland not the Aegean sea. Nolan tried to give a justification for Odysseus getting lost and ended up making himself look geographically illiterate.

During the part where Odysseus speaks to the dead, Achilles shows up in original story lamenting how war sucks and there is no glory in being dead and it is better to be alive with your loved ones. In the movie this role is given to Sinon.

Watch out for the white knights like Paul Tassi defending this movie from the evil "anti-woke chuds".

Especially that Antifa faggot Dave Rivera sperging about it in joy like a soyjak & smugjak watching his favorite YASS SLAY KWEEN with her five big black boyfriends from his cuck chair. He's also a alcoholic retard to self-dox himself, right @DyslexicMoogle?

Plot twist: This WAS an AI generated scene imposed on a green screen. You are giving them way too much credit.
Oh god, the memes are going to be good. Not quite the next Buck Breaking but close enough.

If they can't talk with him, how do they bamboozle him into drinking the wine? Now that I'm thinking about it, so much of the cyclops sequence in the poem is about the cyclops's lack of respect for social norms, his desire to grab up all he can while he can, dismissing all notions of hospitality. Without that, it's just Odysseus defeating a monster by stabbing it with a pointy stick.

Did anyone else here play "Wishbone and the Amazing Odyssey" when they were a kid, or was it just me?

Now, to be fair, Eurylochus was the only one smart enough not to get turned into a pig. Sometimes being the voice of reason means you have to be a little bit of a jerk too.

Ha ha ha, so there's a ghost of Ellen Elliot Page?

There is none of that. The Cyclops is literally just a big ugly monster that they stab in the eye when it goes to sleep and then Odysseus shoots it with an arrow to piss it off.

Also I’m not sure if it was meant to be deliberate but the Cyclops in the film appears to have poor vision. There are several instances where he is looking right at our heroes and just does nothing. And poor hearing too apparently because he doesn’t react to Greeks loudly screaming while he’s chomping on their mates.

God the entire scene is so stupid that I could rant about it all day.

Funnily enough Eurylochus does get turned into a pig along with the others in this movie.

LMAO guess there is.

I think I played it a few times on the computer at the local library.

Holy shit people I was kidding about When the Wind Blows

Yes I know it's a dark, heart breaking movie about your parents dying after a nuclear war. God damn does no one get a joke anymore?

Here's the review for those who don't know

I still don't understand what was. They put the movies' names together, and now you have to watch both of them or something? (I did not watch either one)
It was viral marketing IIRC from the Barbie marketing team. Both films came out the same week IIRC, but rather than play the sexism card they came up with the idea of making people see BOTH films by pitching it as a surreal double feature that could benefit theaters as a whole

With all the problems the film has, why exactly is the audience score for this film so high
How else can you sniff your own farts? More than half of the high scores are just people who went in for the clout - just to say that they went to see it with a picture near the poster, or of the poster, or a picture during the movie... But not a single one of them will ever tell you exactly what it's about.
