Nolan's The Odyssey - Potentially could be epic or an epic flop.

And the biggest thing you'll notice is that it RUSHES. The cuts are rushed, the story is rushed, the dialogue is rushed
Yeah that was the most glaring flaw that I could not help but notice, there were a couple times where i thought maybe it was a boofering issue with the cam rip i was watching so i had to go back 10-20 seconds only to find out this is how they shipped it. It has schizophrenic pacing and cuts.

Also during the final slaughter back in ithaca, it was so fucking annoying how when the dude that ran upstairs to get weapons smashed a hole to drop them down, every time he dropped something down it would cut to robert pattinson saying "PICK UP THOSE (item that was just dropped down the hole)" It just felt retarded, like i get it, he dropped the swords and shields down the hole and the guys fighting for their lives can pick them up now, why did nolan feel the need to cut to robert every time.

I've watched some scenes and she's absolutely not the best actress. She makes only one face:

Zendaya somehow became a nepobaby AFTER becoming famous. She's shoehorned into everything.

I haven't seen a Nolan movie in a very long time, but I feel like I don't remember his directing being so.. bad? I'm not watching more than 10 or 15 minutes, but for a film that is over 2.5h, every scene feels too quickly paced. During dialogue shots barely last a second or two, with cuts between time periods, shot/reverse shot, and environmental shit all mixed together while the dialogue plays over it. Dialogue that just aids in making it all feel like a mess, as it really doesn't mesh with with the tone or what is on screen.

Actually, continuing to watch, maybe the editing is just fucked. There is a scene around 13min in, where the shot has her on his back, climb off, and look him in the face, but it cuts like a second worth of the scene to have him speak with no wait. I assume this isn't the cam recorder guy editing the footage?? The fuck is this??

I'm about a third through it (admittedly, I skipped ahead a bit). The editing is terrible throughout, far worse pacing of scenes than Dark Knight Rises (which had horrible pacing).

I think it's due to him filming the entire film for IMAX. You can only film for like 2-3 minutes before needing to change the film in the camera, and each reload takes like 20 minutes. Apparently Holland and Damon have complained about this messing with the pacing of a shoot, though I can't find the interview where they say that.

It's almost unwatchable. Nothing gets time to breathe, the film cuts up each scene constantly for flashbacks and there's few establishing shots.

I scrubbed around too and I thought I was getting trolled. What are these quick edits? I can't watch it with sound right now so it was readily apparent as I watched all the jump cuts fire off in the span of a few seconds.

From my limited watch I noticed there are only 3-4 sets as well. The majority is spent inside the home, outside the home, on a beach and in a cave. The exterior shots in the forest aren't that long. The color palette is really washed out too but it could be due to the cam rip.

The diverse modern cast, poor costume design and limited sets make this look cheap and amateur which is not what Nolan wanted to present. This gritty realism can work for Batman to an extent but this movie needed magic. The audience needed to suspend their belief for an epic tale and he did not deliver. It's shoddy, an embarrassment and quite frankly boring.

Save your money and your time.
Jump ahead to the 1 hour mark on the cam copy (the kid screaming in the steel helmet) and watch that 'action' scene from there. I've never seen a more boring action sequence in a film. Though the fight at the gates of Troy scene a few minutes earlier is nearly as boring. The Battle of Helm's Deep, this is not.

The 'Greeks' sure don't know how to form ranks or establish a shield wall. Or how to send scouts ahead. Or what a delaying action is. They just flee idiotically, more a mob than an army. Which would work if they weren't objectively soldiers.

I'm starting to see what Gore was going on about when he kept saying this feels like Nolan is copying some obscure low-budget foreign films from the 70's.

Does it have more than two colors?
No, not yet. The night scenes are mostly orange and black. The day scenes are brown and slightly lighter brown. So far the most color in the film was the Viking longship's sails. I shit you not, this is the most color in the first 3rd of the film, by far:

At first I thought it was the poor quality cam-copy, but now I'm thinking Nolan has actually smeared vaseline over the lens, like Snyder did for those garbage Star Wars/Magnificent Seven knockoff Netflix films. It's legit hard to make out details. They're on a beach, there's trees, but the focus is all off.

Random thoughts:
I'm an hour+ in, and so far I think the Indian "We're greeks" guy has had the most actual screentime. Damon probably next.

This is also when Zendaya starts showing up. No lines yet, just scowling like this is Dunc again.

The shitty dialogue isn't bothering me as much as I expected, mostly because like Alan said, I can't understand most of what they say without turning the volume up so loud it distorts everything. Not drowned out by music, just muffled/mumbled lines. I guess that jet-engine of a camera is the cause.

The Trojan armor/costumes are the worst in the film, so far. Just beyond shit. All identical, all identically shit. Nothing remotely in keeping with actual armor of the period, but more importantly, they're fucking boring. I am not exaggerating to say that Xena/Hercules had more fun costumes, with far more texture and weight. You can feel the foam rubber of these things.

Oh, the Trojans are also multiracial. Blacks, an Indian. Maybe a Mexican guy.

The sets are boring and very underbuilt. So far it's most just one room for Odysseus' home, Menelaus' palace, Troy is a travesty, the rest is just the longship or random beaches.

This is fucking Troy and it's famous walls that withstood a decade-long siege:

Get used to that tiny ass 50ft wide expanse of wall, because that's the entirety of the battle for Troy.

It's honestly less impressive than the ziggurat set from Beastmaster, that poor-man's Conan from the 80's. And that film had far better fight scenes, even the cheap final battle was better than anything in this so far.
the-beastmaster-10.jpeg

I'm not sure I can finish this film. Even skipping around, it's a chore. I might actually just pop my Excalibur dvd in and watch that instead. It's been awhile.

Or even Beastmaster, at least it's fun. This, this is not fun to watch. Even if you love Nolan and he can do no wrong, there's just not enough here to enjoy anything.

Even the cyclops wasn't particularly good, and that's what I've seen praised the most in reviews besides Circe.

I cannot help but feel that once again a Nolan film would be better if he just got off his pretentious high horse and filmed it linearly from scene to scene, instead of trying to do his timey-wimey shit that only really worked in Memento. It ruined Dunkirk, it's not helping here.

That's always been his thing, going back to even his older more beloved movies like The Prestige. Nolan is a shoddy director who relies on fast editing and constant montage in an attempt to not bore the audience. That's why it's so laughable how midwits like to compare him to someone like Stanley Kubrick, who had no problems holding on a shot for a long time. Nolan is very much a modern adhd mass appeal kind of director, he's been put on a pedestal simply because of the seemingly hefty themes that make your average movie buff feel really smart for watching his work.

same shit that made oppenheimer a chore to watch (awful movie btw), now in a movie where actual shit is supposed to happen on screen. i feel for you bro, i aint even gonna bother trying

No, it's definitely a thing. That edit I clipped there was so jarring I had to clip it, but every bit of face to face dialogue is edited with so many fucking shots. It's very bad.
Probably the film makers assuming everyone has too fucked up attention spans and they need to do this to keep people from pulling out their phones and scrolling tiktok.

What's worse, they are probably right.

Here's what all this insanity ultimately boils down to, the crux of Odysseus's character as Nolan wants everyone to see it.

Odysseus is le PTSD-riddled vet who legitimately thinks he deserves exile and damnation because of The Trojan Horse. He claims that the destruction of Troy, and especially the way that Troy was des(troy)ed was an offense unto nature, decency and the laws of Zeus. He essentially equates the state of things prior to the Sack of Troy to a mandate of heaven, one shared by the Greek nations and thrown away when they snuck in and killed their enemies. Now that mandate has been violated, the Sea Peoples are invading and destroying Mycenaean/Achaean/Greek civilization.

That's right, your senses do not lie to you. This is one giant liberal guilt fantasy. Substitute white/western civilization with the Achaeans and you'll see it.

"Our age of bronze is ending."
-A line actually spoken and written in a $250 million dollar Hollywood production.

I didn't make it that far into the movie but jesus that's fucking underwhelming.

Compare that scene to Troy from 2004

I love incredibad blockbuster slop. Having watched all those /tv/ webms, I'm now sold on wanting to see this turd on an IMAX screen. There was a ton of things retarded with Interstellar (the saving grace of which was the cinematography) - But this one seems to fully go off the rails into unintentional self-parody.

Don't give money to this garbage and to Nolan ... I watched some parts of the cam rip, it's not even "so bad it is good".
Even if you dislike the film, paying for it will mean more subversive propaganda will be produced due to "demand".

One of my biggest pet peeves in movies is people instantly taking off or losing their helmets and this movie has completely destroyed that belief.

Lol. Funny thing is there are theories that Greeks were one of the groups that formed "sea people" and Trojan War is mythologized story of one of their expedition. Also woe is me we did le bad thing in Troy is so retarded. What Greeks did was normal MO for everyone back then. And you have Assyrians next door. :story:
