Undertale / Deltarune / Toby Fox Discussion

It's ridiculously easy and braindead outside of the secret bosses
Not every game has to be ballbustingly difficult. It's a unique blend of mechanics that make for a greater sum of its parts. But this argument is pointless, because of the kind of person you are. So whatever. The game is gay and shit and lame and we should all stop talking about it and go back to posting wojaks ad infinitum.
What happened to this game, man...
It's just meant to be a thematic moment where Kris and company also use the power of friendship by trusting each other the way the flowers do to overcome an obstacle. But like many things in 5, it falls a little flat because they basically had a moment like this with the climb on the titan in 4 where Susie catches you if you fall and tosses you further up.

Oh, and Dark Place where they each take turns shielding each other from damage.

Got my ass temp banned for saying how it would be absolute kino if during Chapter 4 you picked "Good. Keep smiling" later on Ralsei will troon out but if you picked "It's ok not to smile" Ralsei will still be Ralsei.

Not every game has to be ballbustingly difficult.
This is mindless toddler game journalist difficulty in a video game aimed at teens. Mario RPGS for children provide more pushback and thinking than this, but I guess people play Deltarune for comfort food and xitter screenshots.

Bullets barely deal damage with 3 hour invincibility frames and you have access to basically infinite healing and revives. There's basically 0 strategy in the battle system as all party members have been watered down to serve the same purpose, and acting boils down to doing a different minigame for dealing wholesome damage instead of a minigame for bad damage. All difficulty is locked behind secret bosses.

My pokemon suddenly started attacking on their own without my input, it was such an awesome character moment that brilliantly displayed their growth throughout our journey.

I never said this.

I'm pretty sure the main reason people ITT are shitting on chapter 5 is because they got cucked out of their favorite ship
Assassination_of_Julius_Caesar_for_Historia_de_Europa.webp

Just because the only fatal stab wound on Ceasar was the second one to his chest that doesn't mean the other 22 all over his body were a good time.

If half the runtime in 5 wasn't poorly written over-the-top yurislop the rest of the chapter would still be nothing but treading water and reusing ideas that other chapters already did and did better. "Chapter 5 but good" would be completely unrecognizable.

Eram? That's just the Shadow Mantle itself. There's no mystery, it's sitting in your inventory. Even if the voice talking to you isn't the mantle itself, it could be anyone including someone who would get revealed later anyway, so it doesn't add any extra work.
I feel good that I am no the only one who feels tha the Shadow Mantle Holder literally is the actual Shadow Mantle. At mos, that would be a character holding the actual mantle.

Alphys was intentionally engineered to be an "adorkable smol bean" that the audience would love.
Berdly was intentionally engineered to be a "gamerbro melvin" that everyone would be repulsed by.
I actually followed Toby's intentions here.

Has anyone attacked Flowery after Ralsei leaves the battle? Are you able to put his health low or will Susie's healing eventually outpace Kris's attack?

Played through it, Susie automatically heals him at max health if Ralsei isn't there.
Defeating Flowery through violence is impossible. They will always overheal Flowery. I tried hard.

It's ridiculously easy and braindead outside of the secret bosses, it feels like it's giving the illusion of a video game most of the time. The parkour part in chapter 5 where they hold your hand after you fail twice is insulting, and they try to disguise it as character development which is hilarious.
It honestly makes me question why it was like that. Was it just for a bit? Was it because Toby thought it was too hard for the average player? Or was it a plot point? Where the game is pointing out how easy it's making itself.
I got rather annoyed I lost the chance to do it myself after fumbling the first time.
Wait... beating that part normally is actually possible and not a mandatory failure?

Wait, they heal flowery? Why? Like what is the in world explenation?

Yeah it's really not that difficult, 99% of the problem is just you not being used to the mechanics to be able to string them together all at once at that point.

I assume that's why they cuck you out of it after only two tries, any more and you'd just learn how to do it and miss le hecking character development.

I get what they were going for but it's pretty lame.

Susie and Ralsei are becoming more independent and they don't want to kill him. That's basically it.

It's more implied than confirmed, but she does say that she moved to town and she must be new since Undyne had no clue who she was.

Should we also add the fact that the forgotten man and his tree can be found in her lab in Undertale?

i find this very weird, because it's implied that alphys moved in while hometown was already in a gameified state but not closed off from the outside world. she is a gaster's agent, she is working with these fucking goners.

To be honest I don't have a particularly problem with Deltarune's difficulty. In chapter 5 I only died like 4 times (including that one triplet fight in hometown) so it might have been easier than the earlier chapters (I know I at least failed Jevil, Gerson, and the knight more than I did Mew Mew), but it doesn't particularly feel like it's trying to make itself easier and baby me.

But if the difficulty ramped off and I found myself dying more I wouldn't have an issue with that either, though I think the balance of secret bosses or bosses being the only real ones where you have to try multiple times, and regular encounters being fine if you're halfway decent works.

I'd be fine with the game being piss easy if it delivered on other fronts, but past chapter 2 it really doesn't. And despite most of the audience and even Toby himself not giving much of a shit about the gameplay, they still dedicate years of development time to one-off minigames and feature creep no one asked for. It would have been easier and more fun to just stick to the bullet hell battles they established in 2018. Although I'll admit climbing and the 2d shit is cool.

Deltarune now runs the struggle of having difficulty modifying items in a game with skill based damage mechanics.
Easy to handle in a game like UT with backtracking but you're not exactly able to really plan for if a player will have collected the dildong of infinite power or not in say ch 3 when designing a boss that everyone should be able to beat.
So now it's either too easy or too hard depending on player items.

The dumbest way Toby could block us from getting the Twisted Sword in Chapter 6 is by making Malius unavailable. Imagine getting the Pure Crystal from Seam, the Thorn ring materializes somewhere or whatever, then when you go to Malius he just goes "Nah, I don't feel like it"
i think it'd be a pretty cruel joke to play on the player, but only if the twisted sword has any kind of plot importance in its own route.

pretty sure its impossible to do it with manual acts. you would need to send ralsei to hang himself before the anchor even appears on screen while youre in midair. when they start doing things without your input they also do it much faster
