Nolan's The Odyssey - Potentially could be epic or an epic flop.

This is only if you live in a high cost metropolitan shithole. All the theaters near me are between 6-7 dollars on Tuesdays. Some theaters have discounts before 5pm everyday. 10 dollars is around the normal price for a standard showing. The prices really haven't grown much in the past decade and movies are still a relatively cheap way to be entertained for a few hours.
Its my understanding that theatres basically waive their part of the profit to do that. We usually always wait till Tuesday/Wednesday tickets hit.

So if you go see The Odyssey on Tuesday the theatre has to pay all 7 dollars to the studio and hope they make it back on concessions. They may make a little money if you go see it 2nd month. Studios ease up on rentals to keep it in theatres or have it part of the rental fee deal.

3 dollar movies are not economically feasible given property costs and costs to run the theatre and the "rental" the studio charges to show the movie. Even with a full house. Theatres are pivoting hard to alcohol and other upcharges because there is basically no profit margin outside of those.

Just like you have a nerd trading card game store that makes the bulk of its actual profits off soda amd chips, movie theatres were on that model decades prior.

I looked into the pricing a bit following up this post. It turns out I had the theaters mixed up. The AMC I though had real imax had 70mm for $14 and imax for $20. The real imax theater was a brendan that had showings for $50! The theater didn't have a lot of seats, but only 7pm on opening day is fully booked out as of now. All the other showings have around 8 seats available. I can see opening weekend being booked out by the time of showing. Beyond that, every showing is half booked.

I live in the middle of nowhere.

You are lucky if ticket prices are still down, this is a normal showing. As you can see $12, before the online upcharge.

Are there "Dollar theaters" anymore anyway at all? Or even like discount that might be $4-5? Maybe some out in the sticks left?

Home theater was starting to kill those off for a long time and even a modest home theater was better than those by 2010 or so. I still think theaters are mostly to be 'event' mini theme parks eventually and be somewhere like Imax level or some super-thing like the Vegas Sphere. I don't see how the current model of $15-20 tickets for standard to good screens will last more than another decade.

Nolan fans are now starting to be obnoxious as the gunngooners and synderbros. Defending anything he does, like his bad sound design. they think they're le cultured intellectuals for watching his films.
🙄
Don't get me wrong he's talented and I like some of his films but the glazing is unbearable with the added culture war faggotry.

I can agree to that by pointing out 300. Was it historically accurate? Helllllll no why on earth would they go into battle with capes and underwear?

But it was pretty bad ass

300 also was based on a comic, not the actual history. If you actually compare it to the comic it is absurdly faithful, literally recreating panels in the screen one to one.

MovieBob gets it: Nolan's Odyessy is meant to be a deconstruction!!!

Then why is it called Odyssey? Why even pretend it was a attempt at telling the story if it is in fact a deconstruction? WHAT WOULD DECONSTRUCTION EVEN MEAN IN THIS CONTEXT?

MovieBob ironically provides us with a great review: in his own way he is telling us the movie is shit that only stands as a monument to culture war politics.

Class of the Titans is the kind of 'mash up' thing a 'deconstruction' should be, and that worked great, at least the original did. A lot of those Hercules movies MST3K riffed on from the 60s-70s were shit, but they were just a general genre, not taken directly from literature.

It's weird all the conflicting things going on with this one, but I think I might've been right a week ago when the 'insane casting' might turn out to be small cameos to rage bait a bit, and the real problems are the script. Looking forward to the full Filmthreat and Jahns reviews. There's very few others I can even bother with anymore.

I looked at the closest 70mm imax for odyssey and as far as it goes from 7-midnight showing it's almost all sold out. for 3 weeks.

See, it ain't cheap to go to the theater. Especially when it's the premium grade that Nolan makes his movies for.

Moana flopping gives me a bit of hope for this. It was projecting a ~$100M opening weekend and hasn't made half of that.

And while that has some Disney baggage, the only other thing it had going against it was no one gave a shit about it - it was a movie no one asked for. Seems a bit similar.

Nolan fans are the worst IMO. Bad audio mixing is an objective flaw and he can claim he's doing it for IMAX all he wants, but other people who film in IMAX don't have this issue. They then act like his movies are profound technical achievements when they're just the ideas that a college freshman would think is profound. Kubrick, Satoshi Kon, and Mamoru Oshii did the pretentious arthouse shtick better. Nolan fans start and stop at Nolan when it comes to cinema and consider themselves cultured for it.

Gunn fans are annoying in the way that A&H readers are annoying where they defend all the lies Gunn tells and then rush to defend the garbage that results from those lies. They are better than Nolan fans in that people kind of tune out hipsters when they say dumb things. Gunn is considered a one-trick pony promoted far beyond his abilities.

Synderbros just like dark, gritty movies made for 14 year olds. I don't think they annoy anyone really.

It was estimated at 80. Both it and Minions way underperformed this month. Its reasonable to think other movies will under perform.

I think nobody knows how this movie will go. Traditionally this many ticket pre sales signal a very strong release. But the non Imax screens getting almost zero pre sales is also not normal.

International is going go make or break this movie. I have zero idea what China thinks of this movie. India will probably watch. But those sales are also a third at best back to the studio.

I hold on breaks even and value is going to be award season bait.

Just like you have a nerd trading card game store that makes the bulk of its actual profits off soda amd chips, movie theatres were on that model decades prior.
Back in my theater working days, I asked my manager one time when we were pulling stock for the evening rush what the price differential was on concessions. She told me the cartons for popcorn and soda were about 10 cents each, and back then we were charging about $5 for a large popcorn. One of the bag-in-boxes for soda was about $45, but that didn't matter because the theater could get dozens of drinks out of one bag, and even a small drink cost about $2.75. The smallest profit margins were on candy. We later started selling pizzas and pretzels, but to be honest those were probably loss leaders because there was so much spoilage that we had to throw out at the end of a shift.

Up until probably the early or mid-2010s, ticket prices hadn't quite gotten to the point that it seemed like you had to make a choice between tickets or popcorn and a soda. So if you had to pay, say, $6 for a matinee, you're probably paying about 1.5 times that if you buy both, or about the same if you just get the popcorn.

Now a ticket can cost about $12 or more for a new release and you're probably paying $15-20 for the popcorn and soda. Even with inflation, that's a lot of fucking money, especially considering the absolute slop being released now.

You mentioned the 3-dollar movies (or $1, if you remember the late 80s-early 90s), and while you're absolutely correct that the economics didn't cover them anymore, it's still a damn shame that those shitty little theaters shut down, because if you were dirt-poor, that was a viable way to go see a movie without it hurting your wallet too much.

Much has been said about the financials for The Odyssey, but the Odyssey is concurrently garnering expected to make more profit in premium formats, as well as cinemas that will have the capability to show on film. Cinemas that have a projectionist will likely show The Odyssey for longer, Especially if they are newly trained, and if a location has had to pay for maintenance. There are close to 30 additional locations showing the Odyssey with many of these being the first time in close to a decade, or ever, when showing IMAX film. Kinepolis Brussels is notable with them doing significant marketing about their new installation, with it now being the biggest in Europe for IMAX 70mm. This makes it likely that there will be a vested interest for showings to continue on for a long time after. The BFI IMAX for instance had showings of Odyssey still up and selling well 3 months after release.

Furthermore,. within western markets, Spiderman Brand new Day does not have an IMAX release, nor does Avenger's Doomsday [this is why Disney invented there new 'infinity vision' format], with both The Odyssey and Dune securing exclusive IMAX windows in advance. This is also going to do further damage in the context of the 1.90:1 IMAX releases, especially when Dolby can do them better and the IMAX exclusive aspect ratio brand [again, 1.90:1] can be achieved with Dolby with a similarly sized screen. Going into the future, this is a test to see if superhero movies can do well without premium large formats [which most of their revenue is generated from standard multiplexes, whilst for say Project Hail Mary significant profit came from IMAX locations, with many sprouting difficulties getting tickets for 70mm and DL2 locations].

In the context of The Odyssey, this is 4 weeks and will likely be extended, with there being further showings likely added. It is entirely possible that film reels will be kept on site. The same happened with Oppenheimer where following its initial run, further January screenings were added going into the Oscar season and most IMAX installations are designed to have 2 individual reels on platters [with a set of 4 platters]. This exists because of IMAX 3d where two reels were used simultaneously, but it can also be used to have another reel ready to be used afterwards. This technique is still used, but is rare with few installations only using it to show multiple back to back showings with IMAX film with the main two locations to do this being in Melbourne and the BFI IMAX in London. The Indiana science museum also does this as well. However, these are the only locations that store their prints on site instead of sending them back. It was also commonly used in the past with double bills so it should not be noted as being exclusive to IMAX as whether it be 35mm or 16mm, if it was 3d it would have required a right-eye, left-eye set up.

Whether or not The Odyssey breaks even will depend on how long the film stays in cinema. Project Hail Mary for instance got an extended run, and frequently sold out. Multiple other movies have done similar, and releases are not uncommon. With the advertising of the Odyssey, it is likely to be a similar phenomena.

On the revenue side we all know that the distributor typically gets approx 50% of the box office with slightly more than 50% in NA, closer to 40% in the rest of the World (exc China) and for China, the distributor is expected to be grateful if it gets 20 to 25% of the box office. What's more rarely relevant is the IMAX cost with IMAX usually taking 10 to 15% of the gross box office and that comes (again usually) from the distributor's share of the pot, not the theatre owner's. So those enhanced IMAX ticket prices are rather less enhanced when it comes down to how much the distributor actually gets
The film also includes marketing for Dune Part 3 as there is a prologue, so that must be taking into account making things more complicated. But yes, IMAX does add on additional bonuses. The cost of projectionists, if the location has them, is also added on. It is rather complicated in the context of the Odyssey.

But, IMAX is also more likely to want to foot more of the bill from this for the servicing costs of cinemas as well as the development of new IMAX film cameras. These cameras will be very effectively going forward as they are significantly quieter meaning the format can be used for dialogue scenes, instead of primarily action and establishing shots. In the past, it would have been something akin to Vista Vision [8 perf 35mm] as we as standard 35mm used for establishing shots. This is why The Odyssey tickets [as well as Dune Part 3] tickets are becoming more expensive. But it seems that the demand is still there.

IMAX tickets have been really interesting though to look at. Case in point, I am going to compare 3 Liemax screens. These screens are of a similar size and the more expensive one is actually a dual laser set up, albeit with a 1.90 screen [this conversion being before single laser screens were available[. The cost is £8, for the single laser one it is £20, and for the Xenon one [the really shitty one, with the older sound units and the 2k xenon projector set up. So very dim and bad colours]. In this case, the cheapest option is the dual laser setup which would offer the brightest colours [it's not a 3d film so the overheating constraints are not present]. For you Americans, £10 is concurrently at 13.40$. Whilst standard tickets at the BFI IMAX are £26 and at the London Science Museum they can be bought for £20.

Gunn fans became insufferable after Gunn had made his knock-off of Ayers' Suicide Squad movie and damn near everyone thought it was the best thing put to screen.

Everybody hates the Snyderverse, but nobody ever discusses the Gunn-verse because there is nothing there to discuss. It's empty, shallow, and inconsequential.

So what you get are dull visuals, awful casting, daddy dialogue, for 2 hours. Who is this made for?
For the "intellectuals" who hate fantasy unless it's just rape, swearing, and murder because they're too above magic. Same thing that happened to Game of Thrones.

What is with the flood of foreign-language corruptions on English language sites recently?
En mi defensa diré que mi gramática es casi impecable en mi idioma nativo.

I think all three are ass directors shitting up our cinema and dragging down our culture the past decade or so. They should be shot into the sun alongside Kurtzman, 2/3 of all Hollywood writers and as many casting directors we can cram in there.

The cope is in.
Throw numbers at the reader to confuse them.

That didn't happen.
And if it did, it wasn't that bad.
And if it was, that's not a big deal.
And if it is, that's not my fault. <<< I believe we are about here.
And if it was, I didn't mean it.
And if I did, you deserved it.

Under $100m domestic would be a catastrophe for the movie as it would really need legs and I don't particularly see a lot of word of mouth happening.

Also, Oppenheimer was really carried by the whole "Barbenheimer" hype.
