Western Animation - Discuss American, Canadian, and European cartoons here (or just bitch about wokeshit, I guess)

My only memories of watching the hub/discovery family were waking up at the asscrack of dawn, getting ready for middle school and watching g1 transformers and the 80s G.I Joe cartoon, you couldn't pay me to watch my little pony shit, let alone any newer transformers stuff.
the funny thing is the hub used to have most of the rueggertoons (tiny toons, animaniacs) which cost a shit ton due to jewberg's prices but the hub threw it all out for live action slop and more mlp when it rebranded to discovery family

now Discovery Family is a channel that only gets 1k viewers daily

Watching movies with my brothers and cousins kids, my sister-in-law put on Brave. I fucking hate Brave, John Lassiter knew that the entire thing was a garbage premise because the female writer got pissy her mommy issues story got criticized. If my boy John “Let me press up on those sweater puppies” Lassiter had his way, we’d get something actually interesting drawing on Scottish myth.

The fucking bear shit is so dumb. If you are going to work it into the story than have Merida bargain with some fairy queen and she can’t archery her way out of it. The antagonist is as stately as her mother or whatever. The Wil-of-the-Wisps are basically a bad cameo. It does not surprise me that they had to get a different director the premise as I have been told is the precursor to therapy movies and therapy animation shows.

Female archery in general as a meme pisses me off. The amount of upper body strength and training needed make it not a good fit for women. If you are gonna do warrior woman shit please do something else. I am not opposed to women having martial pride and discipline.

Brave walked so Turning Red could walk and imply a girl producing CP to sell for profit.

the day that Brave won the Oscar for Best Animated Film instead of The Pirates! In an Adventure with Scientists! was the day young Vyse realized the fact that the opinions of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences weren't worth shit.

Funny how it took most people a year to realize that when lego movie was disqualified for the award just because it was "based on a kids toy."

When Loving Vincent, the movie MADE OF OIL PAINTINGS!!! lost to Coco, it was obvious they didn't even care about art. It's just the "Obligatory Disney/Pixar Award" at this point.

It's a loss to a good movie, at least. I'm sure there's been plenty of less deserving wins for Disney in the past.
I like Coco, and you're not wrong, but I don't think it's so uniquely good that it deserves an award. It's just another Disney film. Correct me if I'm wrong, but they didn't do anything groundbreaking with animation like they'd done in past films, didn't have world-changing songs in it written by broadway talent, it's just...good. Not great. Thinking about it in 2026, I think Coco was probably the first big animated movie to have generational trauma as a theme. Sure, it had the "smash the thing the kid cares about" part from The Little Mermaid and the sexy skeleton bad guy, but it's so clearly the beginning of the end. If it didn't have that it'd be Turning Rojo.

remember that the academy ranks animated movies based on how much their kids liked them as none of the voters actually want to watch cartoons which are clearly made for children. as such, up until recently, there was heavy bias towards anything disney made. only for the past 4 award shows has disney not won since.

The Academy Awards are by and large a popularity contest. They regard animation as an immature genre for kids. Many abstain from voting for best animated feature unless their own children have a favorite in the category. It was not even a requirement to see all the films in any category until last year (iirc). It has never been about art.

I know people here don't have the highest opinion of him, but I think Schaffrillas put it best: "The Academy Award for Best Animated Feature, AKA, The 'LOL, We Didn't Watch Any of These Movies! Just Give it to Pixar' Award."

The Academy Awards have never been about art in any category. Animation is just the one where it's the most blatant.
Beauty and the Beast almost won 1991 best picture (lost to Silence of the Lambs) and sparked the creation of a best animated feature because the Academy got butthurt that a children's cartoon was up against super serious live action films.

Like, we're not talking He-Man here, this is legitimate animation!

To be absolutely fair, Animation Twitter doesn't help matters.

Which is ironic because that is one of the very few cases in which I agree with The Academy on their best picture winner.

I see you fell down the same rabbit hole I did.

Legit, they thought they were so clever to hide the clause behind the lock of eight movies to activate it. Thank God for 2001—uhh wait, shit... Thank God for DreamWorks taking away the first Best Animated Feature win from Disney. They obviously never got over that sleight, even with their wins since. I think they could have won 2001 had they treated Atlantis better, hilariously enough, but I think the Academy wanted to showcase CGI the most due to it being the most innovative at the time.
