A man has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after a three-year-old boy was left with critical injuries after ending up in a zoo's crocodile enclosure.

Cambridgeshire Police said it was called to Johnsons of Old Hurst, near Huntingdon, at 13:24 BST.

Andy Johnson, who runs the zoo, told the BBC his wife, Tracey, jumped into the enclosure to try to help the boy.

A 30-year-old man from Norfolk has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and officers added they do not believe the man and child were known to each other.

The force said it was investigating whether the child was attacked by the animals.

The boy was taken to Addenbrooke's Hospital with serious injuries and is in a critical but stable condition, the force said.

A spokesperson for Johnsons of Old Hurst said its thoughts and prayers were with the boy and his family.

"Out of respect to the family, our Tropical House will remain closed until further notice," they added.

"If you have any questions about the incident, please direct inquiries to Cambridgeshire Police Constabulary.

"The rest of the site will remain open as normal."

Det Insp Verity McCann, from Cambridgeshire Police, said: "At this stage we are speaking to people who were at the zoo at the time of this distressing incident to understand more about the circumstances.

"We do not believe the man arrested and the child are known to each other. Officers are supporting the boy's family at hospital, and our thoughts remain with them."

Huntingdon MP Ben Obese-Jecty wrote on social media that his "thoughts were with the young victim and his family during a hugely traumatic and difficult time" and he urged people to "refrain from speculation online".

He said he was "liaising with senior officers at Gold Command who are treating this as a critical incident".

Darryl Preston, Cambridgeshire and Peterborough's police and crime commissioner, said he had been briefed by Chief Constable Simon Megicks.

"My thoughts go out to the family of the little boy involved in this truly horrific incident," he said.

"I can only begin to imagine the trauma those involved are going through."

A spokesperson for the East of England Ambulance Service said an ambulance, a rapid response vehicle, an ambulance officer vehicle and Magpas Air Ambulance attended the scene.

"A child was transported by road to hospital for further care," they added.

A Magpas Air Ambulance spokesperson said a critical care team attended the incident at 13:42 and "treated one patient at the scene before taking them to hospital".

A near neighbour of the zoo, who did not wish to be named, described hearing a "lot of sirens" then an air ambulance arriving.

He said the incident was "shocking".

Mike Annicelli, 52, who also lives close to the zoo, said he had previously visited the attraction.

He said there was a "raised platform" in the enclosure and estimated the crocodiles were about 15ft (4.5m) below. He said there was fencing along walkways which he estimated was around 4ft (1.2m) high.

Members of the media are at the scene but police are no longer there.
According to its website, Johnsons of Old Hurst is a family-run farming business that now features a butchers, a farm shop, tea room, steakhouse and zoo.

It says it "houses over 100 fascinating animals" including crocodiles, African lions and a Bengal tiger.

The crocodiles are kept in a converted cattle barn, which has metal-fenced elevated walkways looking down on large pools of water surrounded by tropical vegetation.

The Tropical House enclosure where the crocodiles are housed remains closed until further notice, a spokesperson for the zoo said

Charlotte Lowe, who represents Old Hurst on Huntingdonshire District Council and Cambridgeshire County Council, said she was "shocked" when she heard about the incident.

"To have something like this happen here is just incredulous," she said. "You don't expect this to happen in a rural village."

The enclosure had safety measures in place, she added, including Perspex glass and secure walkways, and the zoo was a popular attraction to visitors from all over the country.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with the family of the young boy suffering in this," she added.

The zoo is expected to reopen on Friday, although the Tropical House will be closed.

Every day the UK gets worse. It's like a sick nightmare that I can't wake up from.

I don't even live there and I get an intense feeling of dread whenever I think about it. I fully believe this is going to be us next if the Brits can't save their country.

I bet most people have also had this sudden feeling of "the call of the void". Like if you're holding a cup of coffee next to someone you dislike. What if you just...threw it in their face? Or if you were walking across a bridge, you could jump. Wouldn't it be exhilirating if i yelled something right as this plane was taking off? Obviously a sane person never does it but the thought still enters your mind. Other people who don't have the mental capacity to say "uhh no actually" aren't fit to walk our streets.

Man accused of throwing boy, 3, into crocodile enclosure at UK zoo released on bail Article | Archive

The three-year-old boy remains in hospital in a critical but stable condition.

A man who accused of throwing a three-year-old boy into a crocodile enclosure at an England zoo has been released on bail.

The boy was allegedly thrown by a stranger into a habitat housing multiple crocodiles at Johnsons of Old Hurst, a zoo in central England, about 1.24pm BST (10.24pm AEST) on Thursday.

The zoo owner’s wife, Tracey Johnson, jumped into the enclosure to rescue the child, The Sun reported.

The Cambridgeshire boy was rushed to hospital with serious injuries where he remains in a critical but stable condition.

Police arrested a 30-year-old man from Norfolk, who was not known to the child, on suspicion of attempted murder on Thursday.

He has been released on bail on Friday after police deemed him “not being fit for interview”.

The man has been bailed until September 18 while police conduct their investigation.

Local media reported the man has learning difficulties and had been visiting the zoo with a carer, who was not with him at the time of the incident.

“Our enquiries are ongoing as we continue to understand the circumstances surrounding this distressing incident,” Detective Inspector Verity McCann said.

“Our thoughts remain with the boy, and his family and specialist officers continue to support them through this difficult time.”

Police earlier said they were investigating if the boy was attacked by any of the animals.

Photos from inside the zoo show visitors standing on raised boardwalks overlooking a sprawling crocodile enclosure filled with water, dense greenery and rocky islands.

Multiple barriers and fences can be seen between the public viewing areas and the habitat below.

Several crocodiles can be seen throughout the habitat, with some in the water and others resting on land.

According to the zoo’s website, the collection includes a range of crocodilian species, including American alligators, broad-snouted caimans, Cuvier’s dwarf caimans, Morelet’s crocodiles, Nile crocodiles, saltwater crocodiles, Siamese crocodiles, spectacled caimans and West African dwarf crocodiles.

The zoo’s Nile crocodiles are among its biggest attractions and can grow to almost 5m in length.

A local resident told The Sun they saw distraught staff members embracing one another in the aftermath.

“It’s simply awful,” they said.

In a statement posted to social media, Johnsons of Old Hurst said its Tropical House would remain closed until further notice “out of respect to the family”.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the boy and his family following the incident that occurred today,” the statement read.

“If you have any questions about the incident, please direct inquiries to Cambridgeshire Police Constabulary.

“The rest of the site will remain open as normal.”

Yeah, this could very well be the case. There was that murderous autist who threw a toddler off the roof of the Tate a few years back.

Even if it was a sped, he reached for someone he could easily pick up and throw, so there's a degree of calculation there, however hard his mangled brain matter worked to make it.
In a just society he would have been taken around back and shot within a few minutes of doing this. Guy tried to kill a random toddler, what reason is there to keep him alive?

Five to one it's a muslim, they have a documented history of throwing white children off balconies and such things, and the bongs are carefully not mentioning anything about his identity, which they typically try and do to protect muslims.

Have you ever seen foreign carers accompanying adults with learning difficulties in public?! They hardly ever look at them. They just go on their phones!! Ridiculous... Oh, and none of them have any proper training either!!

I dont even have the strenght to mock the brittish and their accent anymore, please do something already!

Oddly enough, Winston Churchill once said “Appeasement is feeding the crocodile hoping it eats you last.”

The English took that literally. They’re still working their way through the women and children.

On this occasion I doubt it... It was most probably a white British person with severe learning difficulties and aggressive tendencies, which his foreign & unqualified carers failed to control!!

They will certainly portray the tosser as a white man influenced by the manosphere and Andrew Tate when they make a Netflix movie about the events, called "Alligator," which will receive a 97% Rotten Tomatoes consensus and be praised on the floor of Parliament.

A few have mentioned already, but this whole situation is highlighting the wrong problems.

The man in question was on a 1-to-1 support, and his carer should've been with him the entire time possible. He was taken to a public space, where these risks genuinely could apply, and his carer failed to look after him when they absolutely should've. The fact he's at the point where he has a carer and is going out on these trips is indicative that he's got risks, he's got special needs, and they've been detailed to the person who's supposed to be looking after him; you can usually get a strong background of what a person might do based on things like medical history, schooling history, any ECHPs in place etc.

So, a vulnerable man without the coherency to understand what he's doing, out on a 1-to-1 with a carer, ended up doing something he likely doesn't even comprehend the severity of, and that fundamentally is the carer's fault- which, the media seems to be quietly ignoring for whatever reason.

Question is, why is this being pushed as just 'man does horrible thing to child' when really, it's a case of 'negligence of carer leads to serious injury'. This man's being lambasted for his actions when there's a very strong possibility that he doesn't even know what he's done, whilst the carer is managing to scoot on by with not so much as a single mention in the second news article.
