A man has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after a three-year-old boy was left with critical injuries after ending up in a zoo's crocodile enclosure.

Cambridgeshire Police said it was called to Johnsons of Old Hurst, near Huntingdon, at 13:24 BST.

Andy Johnson, who runs the zoo, told the BBC his wife, Tracey, jumped into the enclosure to try to help the boy.

A 30-year-old man from Norfolk has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and officers added they do not believe the man and child were known to each other.

The force said it was investigating whether the child was attacked by the animals.

The boy was taken to Addenbrooke's Hospital with serious injuries and is in a critical but stable condition, the force said.

A spokesperson for Johnsons of Old Hurst said its thoughts and prayers were with the boy and his family.

"Out of respect to the family, our Tropical House will remain closed until further notice," they added.

"If you have any questions about the incident, please direct inquiries to Cambridgeshire Police Constabulary.

"The rest of the site will remain open as normal."

Det Insp Verity McCann, from Cambridgeshire Police, said: "At this stage we are speaking to people who were at the zoo at the time of this distressing incident to understand more about the circumstances.

"We do not believe the man arrested and the child are known to each other. Officers are supporting the boy's family at hospital, and our thoughts remain with them."

Huntingdon MP Ben Obese-Jecty wrote on social media that his "thoughts were with the young victim and his family during a hugely traumatic and difficult time" and he urged people to "refrain from speculation online".

He said he was "liaising with senior officers at Gold Command who are treating this as a critical incident".

Darryl Preston, Cambridgeshire and Peterborough's police and crime commissioner, said he had been briefed by Chief Constable Simon Megicks.

"My thoughts go out to the family of the little boy involved in this truly horrific incident," he said.

"I can only begin to imagine the trauma those involved are going through."

A spokesperson for the East of England Ambulance Service said an ambulance, a rapid response vehicle, an ambulance officer vehicle and Magpas Air Ambulance attended the scene.

"A child was transported by road to hospital for further care," they added.

A Magpas Air Ambulance spokesperson said a critical care team attended the incident at 13:42 and "treated one patient at the scene before taking them to hospital".

A near neighbour of the zoo, who did not wish to be named, described hearing a "lot of sirens" then an air ambulance arriving.

He said the incident was "shocking".

Mike Annicelli, 52, who also lives close to the zoo, said he had previously visited the attraction.

He said there was a "raised platform" in the enclosure and estimated the crocodiles were about 15ft (4.5m) below. He said there was fencing along walkways which he estimated was around 4ft (1.2m) high.

Members of the media are at the scene but police are no longer there.
According to its website, Johnsons of Old Hurst is a family-run farming business that now features a butchers, a farm shop, tea room, steakhouse and zoo.

It says it "houses over 100 fascinating animals" including crocodiles, African lions and a Bengal tiger.

The crocodiles are kept in a converted cattle barn, which has metal-fenced elevated walkways looking down on large pools of water surrounded by tropical vegetation.

The Tropical House enclosure where the crocodiles are housed remains closed until further notice, a spokesperson for the zoo said

Charlotte Lowe, who represents Old Hurst on Huntingdonshire District Council and Cambridgeshire County Council, said she was "shocked" when she heard about the incident.

"To have something like this happen here is just incredulous," she said. "You don't expect this to happen in a rural village."

The enclosure had safety measures in place, she added, including Perspex glass and secure walkways, and the zoo was a popular attraction to visitors from all over the country.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with the family of the young boy suffering in this," she added.

The zoo is expected to reopen on Friday, although the Tropical House will be closed.

We have one in my family who's never had any violent tendencies, so when my eldest was a baby and a retard approached us at the park, and his career said he just loved babies and wanted to look at her I didn't think anything of it. Then the retard tried to smack my newborn in the face and luckily my reflexes were fast enough that he didn't get her, but holy shit. I learned my lesson that day.

I have one in my family. He suffered brain damage during a difficult delivery. Low functioning but very happy, easy going and good natured. Not at all aggressive. The problem is he does not recognize that other humans feel pain. To him they are just objects in the environment. If that human gets between him and something he wants, he removes it without remorse by the quickest way possible. Fortunately he is quite small and light, but he can still pose a threat to young children who just happen to be in his way. Profoundly disabled people can be very dangerous without intending it, especially around kids.

Alright, I’m going to be an asshole in this thread. This whole thing sounds like an Anal Cunt song:
-“A Retard Throws Your Toddler in a Crocodile Pit”
-“Crocodiles Eat Your Children at the Zoo”
-“Immigrants Feed Your Kids to Crocodiles”

Isn’t life just an Anal Cunt song anymore amirite?

A man attacks a child in public, and isn't beaten to death by a collective mob of nearby strangers?
White people, we used to be about something, what the fuck happened?

I read this earlier on The Telegraph, but can't seem to find it again (as if it's been edited out), but it definitely said there was actually a whole group of adults with learning difficulties visiting the zoo when the horrific incident occurred... I'm not saying this is not allowed, but the carers had a fucking job to do!!

So it might have been a tard. Maybe he was told he was not allowed to bring his Nintendo Switch to the zoo. Remember that tard who almost beat a teacher to death over a Switch? Then you had the one who threw a boy over a rail and caused permanent disabilities because his tard guard took his tablet away. I would not be surprised if this was a similar incident.

I'd love to pet an alligator. They seem like cool guys. I don't think you can really get friendly with them because they'll tend to bite your limbs and do a "death roll" resulting in your body being torn apart. It's a shame they're heartless reptiles. They seem alright outside of that. Honestly an alligator seems like it could be a better friend than many people.
They make better shoes and handbags than anything else.

'cause I'm guessing the caretakers, probably some sort of ethnic minority. Probably some Pakistani.
They're usually vantablack. When I've seen them they're either very involved and seem to really enjoy their job, or the complete opposite as above mentioned and completely disengaged and uninterested on their phones.

Pakistanis in the UK are 3% of the population and roughly 30% of the retards, spastics and jellybrains due to the ongoing high rate of first-cousin marriages in their ‘community’. There’s a significant possibility the perp is brown.
My only thought is that the Pakistanis would usually look after their own, and not send their mentally disabled kid to an institution... But I could be wrong!

I dipped into Facebook comments to see if there's any new information, and the current "theory" is that the perpetrator probably wanted to copy other parents lifting their kids to get a better view... I reckon the mental disability was that bad, that the little boy was nothing more than an inanimate object to the guy. Or he was copying the feeding of the crocodiles (that you can do at the zoo for £80). However you look at it, it's horrific, and the parents will never recover from it.

Witness talks about the carers

She added: “Someone later described the man that did it and said he was with carers.

“I don’t know if it was definitely him but I saw one bloke of a bigger build, he had two carers with him and they weren’t paying him much attention.

“If it was him, his carers were maybe ten metres behind him and not paying much attention. They were English and chatting among themselves and on their phones.”

A witness told the BBC she had seen a man in his late 20s, accompanied by two women wearing lanyards who she believed may have been carers, walking through the zoo about 10 minutes before the incident.
She said they crossed paths as she and her daughter were entering the capybara enclosure and the group was coming out on to the forest walk.
The witness said she overheard one of the carers ask: "Should we go to the crocodile house next?". The man replied: "Yeah."
Cambridgeshire Police confirmed the suspect was white British after misinformation shared on social media.

This was in the Telegraph article and while obviously the greatest issue here, by far, is the health of the child, this is a family run business. It has massive expenses in terms of caring for the extensive needs of so many types of animals, and now they are left without income, all through no fault of their own.

The BBC is claiming the man was white-British. But they are refusing to release the name. Shouldn't they have released the name by now?
Seen on Twitter. Might be bullshit, but I doubt anyone is surprised to see a Star Wars name.

Everyone believes it's a foreigner anyway so they might as well tell us who it really is. 21k likes on this alleged misinformation.

According to the Telegraph, the bong pigs are investigating the two foid carers. The retard is a white bong as well. Apparently he gave the foids the slip. Boy broke his arm, which to me isn't quite congruent with critical injuries, but I guess it could be an open fracture or other injuries. He's young so hopefully he'll make a full recovery.
Where did you read that he'd only broken his arm? The Telegraph article you linked to doesn't specify injuries, only that he was also attacked by at least one crocodile. I suspect a 15ft fall and a crocodile attack would have resulted in more injury than just a broken arm. An air ambulance was also dispatched, which suggests to me his injuries were much worse.
