The Shin Megami Tensei/Persona Thread

I'm starting to think fully abandoning the original iteration of persona 3's: the player should only influence the party through Social Links and communication, not direct command, is how we get to Prime Time, you just win no downsides button.
compare persona 3 director's reasoning for no manual party control, then read Prime Time again.

I'd LOVE to read the reasoning for Prime Time and compare that shit to the top.
you just KNOW it would be "it's for the retards"
I miss old atlus

Let me guess, you think Teddie from persona 4 is also connected to Lucifer somehow?

Teddie's social link unlocks Helel automatically so i remember some crazies on gamefaqs unironically argue that teddie was connected to lucifer (it's only because he's Star arcana).

Personally I don't give a shit about the P4 remake now that I know P6 is coming out sometime in the next 5 years (if i'm lucky!); but I'd like to touch on this because it's indicative of a trend that will absolutely continue in P6 and will absolutely assrape that game's difficulty and balancing.

There is absolutely no reason a mechanic like this should exist. I know Persona has never been a hardcore gameplay series like SMT, but come the fuck on there is a clear difference between how the older games have handled combat and how P3R and P4R (and even P5 with the baton pass shit) handle combat. Theurgies and Prime Times are practically "WIN THE FIGHT" BUTTONS and take away any tension the fights might have and unless the balancing accomadates giving you FOUR ONE MORES I have no clue how this thing is even going to be fun to play. I feel like fatlus makes these remakes for people who don't like the gameplay of Persona, which is fun mind you, and only like the life sim aspects which aren't nearly as deep as people think they are.

I posted here but P3 it definitely had the soul of an oldschool dungeon crawler and while Persona 4 took some ofit's harsher elements (stamina, ai control, etc), it was still an actual game of managing your calendar around dungeon trips and your mp in the dungeon. Vanilla shadow yukiko and shadow kanji were also surprisingly hardcore and forced you to defend with chie and yosuke.

P4 Golden additions was the first time Atlus seemed to regret making a dungeon crawler rpg and started to make up additions for the sake of raping their own game balance and marketing it. They nerfed bosses, made up those overpowered navigator skills, random free stat heals and super moves (cavalry), let you restore mp in the dungeon, reset enemy spawns and the broken cards on shuffle time that let you easily beat the game with Izanagi.

Apparently Reload letting you easily run away from enemies (including death) wasn't good enough, now you can stun them even after you draw agro. Also attacking an enemy with aids gives you more free damage and spreads the aids.

("Nice hit"? Really? It's called "nice shot" on the website but also "Send Flying" in other sites. It's such a random mechanic they couldn't even think of a TV pun for it)

I think the P3R and P4R directors misunderstood the sucess of persona 5 and took it as "The normies liked Persona 5 cause it had hype and aura! We need to make this game all about power fantasy spectacle! We must rip off persona 5!"

I'll point out that Persona 4 Golden director (daiki ito) is also the persona 5 royal director and now the persona 4 revival director. While i don't know much about him, glancing at one single interview with him makes it sound like he's afraid of the casuals getting filtered.

Which is ironic since I think he's also the one who amped the difficulty at Okumura's boss fight in royal, which did in fact, butthurt a ton of people who didn't use baton pass up until that point and cried about how it's bad game design.

Anyone who think 6 wouldn't be the same as 5 but maybe college students (which for all intents and purpose just means high school students with less oversight and able to drink) is incredibly optimistic.

Persona 3 could be really punishing with the AI fucking you and lots of bosses needing specific builds to damage, it really sets the mood of fighting against the odds in a harsh reality. Everything I see about 3 Remake is like the meme of "What if Ubisoft made Dark Souls".

And while on the topic, I didn't play Golden but one thing that really irked me is how it completely missed the point in the original being a middle of nowhere with nothing to do.

The character portraits for the Persona 4 remake look really bad to me. I didn't have much of a problem with reload. They all look bug eyed and cheap. Honest to god AI would do a better job.
I really don't need to replay an 60 hour rpg again anyway. It's just some slop for the new generation.

What was wrong with the cel shaded look?

These are way too bright and cartoony.

I’m not gonna play in English anyway but putting two troons into the game would be disgusting. Especially for Naoto when her entire character is learning to embrace her femininity.
True but Persona along with the Yakuza games are two franchises where I feel like if you play with English audio instead of Japanese you get what you fucking deserve.

English audio enjoyers is shameful hoodweeb shit.

Última edición:
I'm not giving Fatlus any money after they completely fucked the Persona 3 remake with shitty additions and garbage art direction.
The company is a shell of it's former self, pumping out shameless sequels and half baked remakes/remasters for a quick buck, there's not a single ounce of passion or integrity left

Might be copium but I'm glad P6 at least based on the trailers seems to be bringing back some of the horror inspired atmosphere and esthetics that were prominent in P2 and P3 and disappeared completely by P5.

Persona 5 at least had a coherent story from beginning to end - you could tell when they started running out of time to flesh out some things, and I legitimately forget Haru exists sometimes because of how late she's added to your party, but it's at a finished story.
I disagree - they had a pretty solid start but the story really just kind of wandered around aimlessly as to what the metaverse really was and why it was good (or bad). It was just a sloppier copy of the Midnight Channel with a worse payoff.

A lot of stuff in P5 felt like "we had this in P3/P4 so we need it here" down to the themes, plot points, and villains but P5 felt like it just ran out of gas in way that P4 did not. Maybe it was directionless writing or maybe it was my 3rd or 4th time through the same exact structure from P3 but it just felt boring and aimless.

I sincerely hope P6 is a very large departure and isn't just Persona 3 again for the 4th time.
P4 also famously had an incel villain which I'm very curious to see how they handle that because the rhetoric surrounding dating/gender relations had gotten much more hysterical and retarded since the original game.
Not just an incel, but, an unrepentant attempted rapist incel.

The persona 4 remake is going to make a lot of people really mad but I think they're going to stick to their guns on this one - considering the absolute glazing they give P5's villain every chance they get.

P4R is the one of the most unnecessary remake in history, but Atlus isn't going to waste an opportunity to absolutely milk this game dry until the teats are churning out dust.
I know they said they're not going to do the "Definitive version a few years later", but I'm not sure I believe they will be able to resist giving P6 that treatment.

€70. Release fucking february? What are they smoking? Is this not just a re-use of the P3R/P5 engine? Why is it taking so long? I remember having a real hard time making myself buy P3R but this shit is pushing it. Every time I'm feeling really into the idea of replaying persona, I remember how much of a slog it is, on top of being incredibly demanding for no real reason towards the end. I remember being so burnt out on P4 that I just used insta-revive cheats on the last boss and it still took +30 mins to kill.

This entire IP is ass honestly. Remove the pedophilic angle and romance and there's nothing redeeming here. Like the combat? Play SMT, where you can actually use your knowledge of the mechanics to cheese bosses that in Persona simply have no weaknesses.

How is non graphic PG13 romance between two teenager characters pedophilia?

By that logic every teen sitcom or comedy ever made is pedophilia.

I don't know man. Isn't it strange that some of the professors since Persona 3 have had romantic feelings towards teenagers? Especially when talking about Kawakami and Kashiwagi?

Not to mention, this a franchise made for teenagers but most of the player base are 20-30 year old men?

Cool.

Never played these games with the English dub and never will. Although, this cast is a nightmare blunt rotation.

Nothing like Morgana repeating Teddie's plot line, except Morgana's struggle is unceremoniously solved offscreen after being built up the entire time

Are you referring to the vanilla version? Because in P4 Golden and P3 Reload, they absolutely babify the fuck out of the difficulty that even a retard with one eye and one hand could beat it with no effort. Persona 3's final boss used to take 90 minutes on average, but with the remake, you could easily trounce the fight in sub 10 minutes with little effort, it's pathetic.
