The Shin Megami Tensei/Persona Thread

Personally I don't give a shit about the P4 remake now that I know P6 is coming out sometime in the next 5 years (if i'm lucky!); but I'd like to touch on this because it's indicative of a trend that will absolutely continue in P6 and will absolutely assrape that game's difficulty and balancing.

There is absolutely no reason a mechanic like this should exist. I know Persona has never been a hardcore gameplay series like SMT, but come the fuck on there is a clear difference between how the older games have handled combat and how P3R and P4R (and even P5 with the baton pass shit) handle combat. Theurgies and Prime Times are practically "WIN THE FIGHT" BUTTONS and take away any tension the fights might have and unless the balancing accomadates giving you FOUR ONE MORES I have no clue how this thing is even going to be fun to play. I feel like fatlus makes these remakes for people who don't like the gameplay of Persona, which is fun mind you, and only like the life sim aspects which aren't nearly as deep as people think they are.
Isn't P4 one of the easier Persona games? Why the fuck does it need an instant win button?

This is especially weird because even though I didn't like Metaphor very much that game had some very challenging bosses and enemy encounters.

Here's hoping this isn't another SMT5 situation where they announce the game then we have another 4 years of development time, only to still wind up with something half baked until the inevitable Ultimate Edition.
I always feel like Persona has a tendency to do the opposite. The original release is an actual game with a genuine (if rudimentary) story its trying to tell, then they shit out a re-release that buries that initial genuine attempt with over produced visuals and half assed gameplay gimmicks stapled to it. They love to do random shit to break the games difficulty so normies dont complain too.

Atlas also loves releasing content that shits over the original release, like when strange journey redux made all the original endings of the OG title bad ends and forced you to team up with the new teen waifu to get your "good" endings.

Yeah Metaphor was a step in the right direction so I thought this shit wouldn't happen but I think they're marketing Persona 4 to those people who saw a funny line off of TikTok as opposed to people who like playing JRPGs. I think it's a terrible direction to head in as these games have very addicting gameplay loops outside of the life-sim shit and P4 was a game I had a ton of issues with gameplay-wise despite loving a lot. I think ATLUS should have faith in the core gameplay mechanics instead of tacking on gimmicks and instant-win buttons.

Or just turn Persona 6 into Press-Turn.

The company also pointed out that players expecting “definitive editions” of games to be released in the future could be what’s making them hesitant to buy the titles at launch. “While we haven’t been able to pinpoint a precise cause of [the lower-than-expected sales performance], we believe the problem also lies in our marketing, which wasn’t able to sufficiently convey the appeal of our games to users,” said Sega’s spokespersons, reassuring investors that they are currently analyzing the problem.
I do not think we are going to see rereleases ala Royal or Golden nearly as much because SEGA specifically said in their financial reports that they believe it is a reason for reduced sales.

P4 also famously had an incel villain which I'm very curious to see how they handle that because the rhetoric surrounding dating/gender relations had gotten much more hysterical and retarded since the original game.

It's been a few years since I've done my replay of P4, guess i can just dust off my Vita. Suck it modern gaming.
Honestly that's the other reason I'm not really interested in the P4 remake - it's already been rereleased on most everything. P4 and P5 have been milked to a degree that it borders on comical, and if they were actual cows instead of cash cows it'd probably count as animal abuse. It's why I give P3 a pass on the Remake treatment, of the mainline Persona's that Atlus gives a shit about it was arguably the most annoying to actually play. Too bad about them basically P5-ing it, but that's another argument.

Now if they announce remakes of P1 or the P2 duology...

I do not think we are going to see rereleases ala Royal or Golden nearly as much because SEGA specifically said in their financial reports that they believe it is a reason for reduced sales.
Honest to God - I'm more surprised they didn't shift to an expansion model before this, but I do wonder if that's just a side effect of how long we go between Persona/SMT releases that they just didn't have the data telling them this was tanking initial sales.

I don't want to see social links anymore but we will never see that happen.

The premise for the game being urban legends and occult stuff is pretty cool since it's kind of a callback to the earlier games, but it's also impossible to set an atmosphere around that when you have the juxtaposition of social mode vs jrpg mode. I wish Atlus would take more risks but really it's probably Sega's fault and Sega will literally never change.

I think Atlus is one of the developers that got hit the hardest by the lack of a handheld console where they can make smaller budget titles that are more experimental. Soul Hackers 2 was fumbled hard and it seemed to be their attempt at bringing the lower budget games back but I think they gave up on trying again.

Something I’m really worried about is the voice acting, especially for a certain character. I played Golden in Japanese (and I’ll play this one in Japanese too) and one of the boss fights HIT HARD. I really don’t want that impact to be reduced.
I’m talking about Marie’s boss fight and her dungeon. Genuinely one of the best areas in the game.

Apparently some of Doi's Demons are in the P4 Remake.

Persona 6 looks a lot different and a lot darker than I was expecting. With the way it opens to a graveyard, I wonder if the green color theory is true where the theme of the game would be rebirth.
In Japan, the color green symbolizes fertility, growth, vitality, eternity, and harmony with nature. rebirth, garden magic, reborn after winter.

I'm a little eager for this because if tradition is to be trusted, every even numbered Persona entry is a banger. Persona 2 duology, Persona 4, touched me more than 1, 3 and 5 have.
Hopefully 6 follows the tradition.

This could be the most religious/spiritually themed entry since 2 but I won't hold out hope for it.

Apparently the press got an extra ~30 seconds of footage beyond the initial P6 trailer. Check it out:
please. no mascot characters, PLEASE.
DON'T MAKE IT A TALKING PIG ATLUS NO. NOT EVEN A TALKING RAT.

The character portraits for the Persona 4 remake look really bad to me. I didn't have much of a problem with reload. They all look bug eyed and cheap. Honest to god AI would do a better job.
I really don't need to replay an 60 hour rpg again anyway. It's just some slop for the new generation.

Less time playing the game and more time gooning to Yukiko... Jamal-kun impressed...
But in all seriousness why does a game like Persona 4 need the difficulty lowered even more, the game already gets pretty easy after the second boss (on Golden but still, that's the version 90 percent of people playing will touch). If you wanna just play a slice of life anime VN with a game technically attached onto it just play that Sakura Wars reboot, it's like eight dollars on PSN.

I'm starting to think fully abandoning the original iteration of persona 3's: the player should only influence the party through Social Links and communication, not direct command, is how we get to Prime Time, you just win no downsides button.
compare persona 3 director's reasoning for no manual party control, then read Prime Time again.

I'd LOVE to read the reasoning for Prime Time and compare that shit to the top.
you just KNOW it would be "it's for the retards"
