Business Black Comics Alliance calls for #DCBlackout boycott - The boycott has led to a lot of discussion online, and also rumors and speculation that DC is planning some titles that would fulfill the demands of the boycott.

Yesterday the Black Comics Alliance, organizers of the #DCSoWhite campaign launched the second phase of their public protest: #DCBlackout, an organized boycott of DC Comics until they implement “meaningful structural changes are made regarding Black representation in their mainline continuity.”

The Black Comic Alliance is
a collective of content creators, journalists, and comic creators focused on amplifying Black voices, supporting Black creators, and pushing for equitable representation throughout the comic book industry. Through campaigns, journalism, community outreach, and industry accountability efforts, the organization works to ensure Black readers and creators are not treated as temporary initiatives, but as foundational parts of the medium’s future.

[Disclosure, one of the Black Comics Alliance organizers is occasional Beat contributor James Portis III.]

The organizer point out that the boycott is not rooted in hiostility, but rather “frustration over what the organization describes as a repeated pattern of underinvestment in Black characters, inconsistent publishing support, and the marginalization of Black creative voices.”

The boycott has led to a lot of discussion online, and also rumors and speculation that DC is planning some titles that would fulfill the demands of the boycott. But the movement is in its early stages, even if the conditions it is protesting are not.

In the meantime, who would YOU like to see as a Black DC character with their own ongoing? (My pick is Static, always Static.)

The Black Comic Alliance, the collective of content creators behind the viral #DCSoWhite campaign, officially announces Stage 2: DCBlackout, a coordinated protest movement calling on readers, supporters, and content creators to withhold financial support as well as cease content creation for DC Comics publishing initiatives until meaningful structural changes are made regarding Black representation in their mainline continuity.

Launched in response to longstanding concerns surrounding the treatment, investment, visibility, and sustainability of Black characters and creators within DC publishing, #DCSoWhite sparked widespread discussion across the comic industry and fan communities. According to the Black Comic Alliance, DCBlackout represents an escalation of that movement after what organizers describe as “continued inaction and performative responses.”

“In almost 50 years, DC has only had 10 Black ongoing series in its mainline continuity, with only 1 surpassing 50 issues, and not a single [title led by a] Black woman. They constantly blame sales, but they’re playing a game with the deck stacked against us. This needs to stop,” – James Portis III, also known as JPenumbra

“DC Comics chose to give a Confederate officer a series before a Black character. Not a good look. Black people only have value to DC Comics during February.”– Ernie Carothers, also known as Blerd Without Fear

The DCBlackout initiative calls for supporters to:

● Post on social media and call for DC Comics to publish 1-3 brand new ongoings for Black heroes in their mainline continuity with strong Black creative teams

● Cancel their pull list subscriptions for all DC titles, including ongoings, mini series, and collected editions, until a Black-led ongoing in mainline continuity is solicited.

● Raise awareness about the fact that digital sales are not valued the same as preorders of single issues

● Push for transparent, long-term commitment and investment to Black representation

● Support Black creators through independent and creator-owned projects

● Encourage industry-wide conversations surrounding equity, visibility, and sustainability

The Black Comic Alliance states that the protest is not rooted in hostility toward fans, creators, or the DC Universe itself, but rather in frustration over what the organization describes as a repeated pattern of underinvestment in Black characters, inconsistent publishing support, and the marginalization of Black creative voices.

Among the concerns cited by the organization are:

● The lack of sustained, ongoing titles led by Black characters in the mainline continuity

● Short-lived initiatives without long-term commitment

● Limited marketing support for Black-led books

● Underrepresentation of Black editorial and creative talent

● Disparities in publishing opportunities, such as not valuing digital sales and not allowing titles to get to trade before cancellation.

“I want to ensure that the comic book readers of the future can see themselves within the pages of DC now and in the next generation,” – Charlie Wilson, also known as Captain Diesel

“The way DC treats its Black characters, especially Black women characters, is something that needs to be addressed. We all deserve better.”– Dr Kaori Knight

The Black Comic Alliance says DCBlackout will remain active until DC Comics publishes a Black-led ongoing in their mainline continuity and gives it promotion on the levels that would show faith in the title and a desire for it to succeed. The lack of transparency on how sales work, as well as the lack of support on display previously, as seen recently with the lack of promotion for The New History of The DC Universe: The Dakota Incident, cannot continue if they wish to say that “Black books don’t sell”.

Supporters can participate in the movement by using the hashtags #DCSoWhite and #DCBlackout across social media platforms and by engaging in discussions surrounding equity and representation within the comic industry.

I thought the Japanese fucking demolished the comic book industry?
I know the local book store I go to from time to time is 30% books 60% Japanese comics and 5% magazines with the rest being coffee cups etc.
Can you still buy comics in stores or are they made to order and shipped?
Basically just at comic book stores and book stores, with some Walmarts carrying a few trade paperback comics on occasion. DC is actually successfully competing with Manga now with their $10 compact editions which feature dimensions similar to manga and a complete story. Apparently their compact editions alone are out selling Marvel's entire graphic novel lineup. This has only started happening since 2024 or so.

The bigger big box stores still keep a capeshit section even when manga and some trash indie comics demolish it.
Still some LCSes that probably run at a loss, sapping the poor dumb fuck owner's inherited wealth.
And then there's libraries, public and school, which are probably a significant part of the floppyslop market. So many tax dollars wasted just to bring in drooling nigger kids who'd be better off 1000 feet from any place of study.

With the caveat that most of these are collections of old comics from 15 years ago, or older still.

There's a few newer titles from the 2020s in the lineup from what I can see, but I guarantee you 99% of the revenue these collections generate are from people buying the old stuff, which once again highlight the issue that has been plaguing the comic book industry for years - nobody is buying the new stories, nobody is a fan of the new characters (or woke variants of old characters).

The Western comic book industry is an ouroboros eating itself, shambling along in a zombified state through a combination of sheer inertia, old fans with Stockholm syndrome, endless reprinting of old stories and Disney/WB keeping the whole edifice on life support to recycle their ideas in increasingly irrelevant movies.

Meanwhile most kids are growing up consuming foreign media and being fans of foreign stories/characters.

One would think the US government would realize the importance of cultural hegemony and soft power, but they think exporting gay race communist propaganda to the rest of the globe is the more important function of their entertainment industries.

If media produced post-2019 features a black main character I won’t consume that media. I’m tired of the lecturing and DEI and this is the best filter to avoid it.

There’s so much pre-2019 content to enjoy that isn’t preachy so I don’t feel like I am missing much.

I avoid any and all stories with nigger protagonists or playing a significant role, regardless of when they were made.

It's not like Luke Cage or Black Panther were created because someone had this awesome idea for the character, they were shat out by the then version of woketards to virtue signal what good commies they were.

Just bring back All Negro Comics from the 40s with new black authors and see how well it sales. DC has always had more aspirational heros and nobody aspires to be a weed smoking gangbanger that robs and steals with no father.

the american, not the western.

Even Disney still has succesfull books around in europe.

the US comics industry cant even make cowboy comics, the most american genre possible.

didn't some characters get race swapped? barbara gordon comes to mind
Race swapping the Gordons is one of DC's favourite hobbies with all new Batman media, I've lost count of how many times I've seen it happen now.

Take the new Lego Batman game for instance: They insisted on it to the point where only the characters who didn't get race-swapped (Batman, Nightwing, Robin) can unlock their designs from older lego games as skins, because doing that for the others would mean either making them white or making the old skins black.

I am noticing a resurgence of the self-entitled social justice grifting that was common 10+ years ago. It confuses me because I can't see the root of it. I wonder whether it is just that the tributaries of USAID have run dry and give back nothing but dust. Activist groups have learned how to use the black power salute as a tool to hammer on the doors of companies, demanding the creation of positions that will advance society, and which coinicidentally they are qualifed to fill. It seems too soon, then again you are dealing with people whose concept of delayed gratifcation is pausing for a second before throwing a brick through the window of a Starbucks.

I think it’s a cargo cult mentality. Black people were never the actual engine of any of this but they were flattered into thinking they were. They’re the biological weapons, not the wielder thereof. So they think that back in the day this is what they did to get what they want, and other avenues don’t seem to be producing any attention, so they figure they’ll gyrate on the dirt runway again to summon the cargo planes. They never understood the system that was providing for them, always thought they themselves were the ones animating it with black power and “resilience.”

This is all just a dollar store version of a BLM-style grift for money and jobs from a bunch of nobodies that is being amplified by the usual white liberals within the greater comics space. Nobody had heard of this group before the boycott and they are so disorganized that I don't think they even have a website.

I started laughing because fuck comic books and then I remembered they are destroying 40k.

This statement could be applied to so many other struggling forms of entertainment and is one of the quietest things that's destroying them all.

At this point? You have 90 years of good movies out there.

80 years of good cartoons.

60 years of good comics.

50 years of good video games.

50 years of good tv shows

These places that are committed to wokeness and "modern" audiences are fundamentally competing with the better versions of themselves that exist beyond the ability for them to lock up with DRM or lawsuits (There are plenty of VCRs and DVDs still out there, completely legal to own sell and trade) and are literally their own worst enemy in this regard.

The industry never thought that if they all decided to go to crap in the same way at the same time? Customers would still have an alternative - buying used. They thought no one would ever do that when new stuff was out there, even if it is, well, crap.

Missed the boat by 10 years.

This would've been gold in 2016 and people would be lining up to not only hire them but build them that website too....

They have no other skills, no other means to self-actualize, no other goal or desire in the world but to become rich, influential, social tinkerers, at no charge to themselves.

And any failure to get any of that on their part is the fault of subversives and saboteurs, so the fact it didn't work last time only means this time they must be more militant and more on-guard for trickery. Their utopia where they sustain themselves through their art at a comfortable level is ordained by their right ideas and moral purity, so they WILL have it.

Basically? They keep trying because they are fundamentally communists except instead of being obsessed with industrial output? Are obsessed over comic books.

And a true communist (tm) does not make mistakes and does not lose, they just didn't try "real communism" yet.

One of the few black DC comics characters that aren’t copying pre-existence white characters was cyborg. DC rebooted cyborg into black Tony stark. Niggers hate cyborg and static shock for having electric powers.
I don't know why. As black historians have told me that the ancient Africans invented electricity!
They still have a plot to follow and I doubt the average "future engineer" is gonna remember what they read by the time the next number is out two weeks later.

Seriously, there are black comic fans, but they're a very small number because most blacks' hobbies aren't reading a comic book (or reading anything) but rather riot, looting, and twerking.

It's so over white people the change.org page has almost 2,000 signatures which is 3 times the amount of readers DC comics has right now so expect big changes soon.

Fun fact, black people hate Cyborg as a character. If you go into the hellscape that is the CBR forms and go into any thread that has to do with the Titans or Cyborg it's just filled with retarded people writing about how they need to "fix" the character and then list their fixes which basically boils down to rewriting the character in everyway outside of appearance. I get a feeling they're like this for most of these black characters but I don't care enough to spend the time to find out.

They want black characters to be even more political and want white characters to be black because they think this is how they should be. It's just superficial reasons for it.
