The Shin Megami Tensei/Persona Thread

I genuinely felt like I was going insane after that game came out. 9s and 10's everywhere and I hated almost every character and thought the writing was absolutely awful.

Thankfully Square Enix's 2026 financial statement confirms Metaphor severely underperformed so hopefully the IP dies because it has no potential or future.

This is a pretty decent takedown of the dogshit writing.

I'll say this if it wasn't for the racism bad narrative being so ham fisted into you with every story beat, the mostly boring dungeon designs and anti-christian stuff at the end I would have enjoyed this game a lot more. You can excuse the God bad thing I guess since this is a JRPG.

It had a lot going for it, a new fantasy setting an interesing parallel to our world and an actual challenging end game boss if you didn't break the crystals, along with a challenging secret boss. I would still take this over a glorified VN game with its very easy boss fights and gameplay that serves as a secondary part to the actual game that has been the trend in modern Persona games. Also, I did thoroughly enjoy Heismay's social link, very well written character the others are bit hit or miss though.

Speaking off, i didin't like that the fantasy world is actually the real world 1000 years after the apocalypse. It just felt very lazy just to subvert our expectations. SMT 4 already did that to greater effect.

I do find it funny that the Elder are the Master race since they are just ordinary humans.

Now that I am thinking more about the game, I really don't understand the Louis glaze some people have. The guy strikes me as a guy who was traumatized by his parents getting killed and reasoned that if he was stronger he would have been able to save them. Then made strength his whole personality trait which also was done better in SMT 3 with Chiaki.

In the threads I read most of the woke stuff was done through localization team. I hope they at least give you a subtitle option next time or a way to see the original script if there is a sequel. The English department in Sega as a whole leaves a lot to be desired especially in the newer Yakuza entries. Why are there Youtubers voicing Kiryu?

I don't think I've ever player an RPG where status effects didn't suck balls and at most were a way to cheese very specific bosses.
Just once I want a SMT game where for 25% of the game, a status effect sucks ass for both you and enemies, to get your guard down.
then after a certain point it becomes fucking OP and you have to realize this bump in power yourself. then after a few hours make it useless again to further fuck with you.

make it like a rat that flips the switch in a slot machine.
"he knows about poison and charm not being useless anymore? Flip The Switch"
"he thinks sleep is useless? Flip The Switch"

I want games to fuck with me mentally like that. making me think I'm crazy.

How does it parallel our world exactly? At least from what I heard, having literal races sinks the anti racism angle since it means there are legitimate ways groups cannot function together.

The issue is that unless you are told someone is weak to something then it's a bother to find it for yourself, especially if it's not guaranteed to work, so you might think the enemy is immune to it via 1% of it applying.

I enjoyed Metaphor and I said it in the thread before, but thinking back perhaps I overlooked some of the story simply because it wasn't just a high school setting again like Persona which is the series everyone knows Atlus for. And no romance beyond an extremely mild one that felt like the character bonding and growing to like you instead of "it's level 9 social link, I now claim you for my harem". I would say the combat was one of the better iterations of their formula, but this is separate to the archetypes.

Absolutely there are some awful archetypes (looking at merchant and trickster) where their main shtick isn't that good and you're angling for one skill. Everyone being a wild card and able to equip any persona/soul/archetype was neat, but this also meant they really pushed spreading out into the design of the system, even if it rewards you with permanent stats, and as mentioned you have to grind for basic skills. You want rakunda? Only from one archetype. Tarukaja? Again, one archetype. I suppose it's because instead of having hundreds there are only like 20 so they really limited their scopes, maybe to embody the idea of "an archetype", so they only do one thing relatively well. Also the whole action pips bonus and refund mechanic falls apart when you eventually cheese it by giving everyone commander's frigid fortress tactic.

But back to the story, I agree post opera house things get rapid and they start doling out the cliches and tropes. Confidant/trusted person to a party member betrayal fight, bad guy actually lived, other bad guy also lived. They throw the Election out the window, or at least the interesting part of it. It very much feels like you're just entering the final arc and we gotta get this shit over with, even before the doomsday clock for going to the final area. I think the world itself was neat and I thought it was quaint that a monarchy, in lieu of a successor, had the late king (by way of anime magic but still) force everyone to engage in democracy. In a way it was like Greek democracy because it mentally tracked everyone's desires as direct votes for candidates, but Atlus didn't really play around with it beyond establishing that there were popular candidates and it's this abstract number you climb up. The twist that it's our world post-magic war and pollution did catch me off guard, and going to Shinjuku underground was a bit of a mind fuck. I dunno if that's because I wasn't thinking too hard, or if they really didn't give that many hints before then besides maybe the opening cinematic before you hit the menu having modern architecture/imagery in it. This does raise some questions like how most of the races make sense as mutations of a human, by intentional design or otherwise, but then we also have weird man babies that can glamer as people, and tiny bat men. Feels like that bit came a little later after the designs for the races were already finalized. Also this isn't really a story thing but using Bosch's art as the basis for the designs of the "human" monsters was great and made for some interesting designs. I particularly liked egg-tree man's design.

I didn't really get anti-racism so much as "propaganda bad", but this is also a little hackey. The church spreads the word that Elda (regular humans) are evil because reasons. They say they wield devil magic but I can't remember if this is shown anywhere (maybe it's just lost in translation from old documents on how the war ruined the world), and they could've gone way harder on that to persecute the player because the archetypes are in-fact a strange magic, where all magic as dictated by church and state must be done through enchanted implements. I guess they didn't want it to feel like you're entirely a monster everywhere since you still need to shop and do things in towns, only the church vendor is really rude to you, which makes sense. Also I don't get anti-christian. It could be that the japs just hate Christians because of history and it's why this is the case, but basically every JRPG church is evil or corrupt.

Is it a 9 or 10/10? No. As a whole package I'd give it like a 7. Persona 5 after everything is like a 5 or 6. Royal maybe creeps it up to a 7 because Maruki like Louis (for about 90% of the game) is at least an interesting final antagonist.

>complaining about anti-Christian themes in the SMT thread of all places
this nigga...

All y'all are dumbasses, More like SHIT Megami Tensi, Persona? More like FURSONA

The REAL ATLUS games you should be playing is the motherfucking gold standard of ATLUS the LAST BIBLE SERIES

Joking aside, I do really love the Last Bible 3, the Last Bible New Testimate series and SMT 1,2 and Persona 2
I wish we had more classic Altus style games these days... Kinda wish Last Bible had the sick first person dungeon crawling too
It's not an SMT game so it's a little off topic but I liked Trauma Center. Sure wii remote pointer controls (the ds ones were alright) could get a little fucked sometimes but it felt really fluid and natural when it did work. I was sure as fuck that they'd have done one on the Wii U because they could've used the gamepad as an ultrasound/X-ray scanner thing you move around with gyro controls to find stuff, or even still one on the Switch because it still has motion and pointer controls, but I guess Atlus put it in the dungeon.

This is genuinely the worst written game I have ever seen, that includes every troon coded game, every hard leaning AAA slopfest, Last of Us 2 and other infamous disasters, every shitty VN, every crappy flash porn game, every barely cohesive amateur project made under a month, absolutely anything and everything interactive. Dustborn and Saints Row 2022 are more bearable than this shit because at least they're so bad they're entertaining, this is just straight up awful in every regard and gameplay isn't much better. Anyone who even remotely likes this is a retard and should be actively ignored. This was made for the western tourists brought in by Persona 4/5 and nothing else, they're starting to remind me of the cancer that was the Undertale tumblr community many years ago.
Is it really this bad? I tell myself i'll get around to playing it eventually ever since its release but haven't done so yet.

Like i said, been planning to since its release. You gonna fault me for asking the Top Minds of KF on their opinion? From what little i've seen of the game i'll probably end up liking it, like most Fatlus games i've played.
The game has been out for almost two years now, you have this thread and other sources spanning two years of people giving their opinions on it. You either play it or you dont. Dont be surprised people are questioning you why you have not found the time in these two years to play a game you supposes "interested" in.
