Movie & TV Show Recommendations

If you need to wash the taste of The Boys out of your mouth give Superman and Lois or the 1990 The Flash TV show a go, both are far better and don't leave you feeling dirty. They are also TDS free.
Rather that Superman and Lois, might I recommend Lois and Clark, the Dean Cain/Teri Hatcher joint from the 90s? But only the first three seasons. It's fun in a way that later iterations aren't.

Hard Eight (1996) - Paul Thomas Anderson’s feature length directorial debut about a seasoned gambler (Phillip Baker Hall) who befriends a man (John C Riley) down on his luck. It doesn’t have the stakes or reach the heights of Anderson’s later work but is a pretty solid 7/10. Also starring Gwyneth Paltrow, Samuel L Jackson and a minor role by Philip Seymour Hoffman.

Love that show, have it on Bluray. Dean Cain is the live action Superman I grew up with and is perfect in the role. I just recommended Superman and Lois as something recent and I like that it tried to be a show about a family, which is different. Lois and Clark reminds me of the Superman radio show in format in that a good portion of the plot involves Clark Kent and Lois Lane investigating stuff as reporters and I like that.

scarface is good but theres a lot of crime films better than it like the godfather, goodfellas, casino, heat etc etc
I liked that it wasn't the Mafia and wasn't the 'hood.

No code of honor, no scene of a drive-by with a pink tricycle on its side with a wheel spinning.

I don't want to say there was no character development because there was, but Tony Montana's entire morality was Tony Montana.

Gangster movies try to pretend they're not nihilistic; that picture knew it was nihilistic and leaned into it.

Atom Egoyan’s Exotica - a film where the leading male character acts in very bizarre ways but once his circumstances are made clear, it all makes sense and becomes quite painful to watch. The opening lines about how one has to wonder what can drive a man to a certain point is the whole point of the film.

I am certain that some of you are aware of and have watched this absolute piece of art before, Second Chance vs. Magnum Force
Richard Davis is famous for being the inventor of the modern day ballistic vest. A born showman he would demonstrate these vests by travelling to police departments and shooting himself whilst wearing them to prove how effective they could be. Eventually he went on to create an a series of advertisement videos which gave us this wonderful video I posted above. Davis credits the idea of the vest after getting into a gunfight when he was a pizza deliveryman.
Except that might be bullshit. In fact a lot of what Richard has said and done may be bullshit. Add on to that a series of disasters and a massive scandal that put thousands of lives at risk which eventually led to the collapse of his business and his bankruptcy.
It's a fascinating documentary about a rather remarkable and interesting man, featuring a mix of archival footage, Davis' advertisement movies (which are all fantastic) and interviews with various people who were involved in the events.
It's not perfect. The documentary maker himself is insufferable sometimes, but luckily he doesn't intrude too much and allows the subjects to mostly do the talking.
I had a really good time with it, I would definitely recommend checking it out.

Editing to add a picture of Davis in a pair of Daisy Dukes while carrying an M2 because how could I not?

The Wizard of Speed and Time (1988 ): written, directed and starring Mike Jittlow, a special effects "wizard".
It's about Mike (playing as himself) trying to make his own independent film and the tribulations that come with such a project.
This film is an absolute joy to watch. Everything from the acting, the humor and of course the effects will make you smile the whole way through.

I'm seconding this and I want to extrapolate a bit on this.
I found out about this a few weeks ago when the Corridor Crew did one of their react segments to VFXs, this being on the 1979 short that Jittlow did while studying for animation. One of the people there actually called Mike who's still alive as of this post and says he wants to release his movie on youtube for free.

So I dug around a bit and Jittlow got hired by Disney at some point. He made an animation for the 50th anniversary. A Youtuber called Eigaken did a retrospective on this.

The movie and the short are both up on youtube. Mike himself has said that he allows sharing via torrent because he got burned by the studio system when the movie was originally released in 86. It seems that it's only in the last few years that it's getting the recognition that it deserves.
There's also the composer, John Massari. He's famous for doing the soundtrack of Killer Klowns from Outer Space and seems to be a friend of Mike. I found a video from 7 years ago where he's talking to Mike about putting the soundtrack on vinyl. He made an instagram post recently that the soundtrack is up on Spotify and it is. He posts stuff to his YT channel too.

I highly recommend checking out the short and the movie if you're a fan of old style animation.

"Do the Right Thing."

I was a little averse to a rewatch since it went through some rough reputational years there, but this is a surprisingly solid film.

Nothing Spike Lee has done in the ensuing 40 years has really tacked down a lot of essential questions about the movie.

One thing I'm considering: Even though this movie has the banter and the look and the sound down, it might just be a deeply cynical movie.

It's a ball worth kicking around.

(To wit, the jeet near my house had lasagna noodles and macaroni noodles but no spaghetti noodles. Thank you come again.)

Red Letter Media loved Second Chance vs. Magnum Force. Starts at 15:50.

They Shall Not Grow Old - 2018

A WWI documentary that restored actual silent footage taken from the war, hiring professional lip readers to transcribe the dialogue and have the audio recreated. the video is slowed down to 1x speed and cleaned up, and is inter spaced with interviews filmed in the 60's. A heart wrenching watch

Based on a book that was way ahead of it's time comes a movie that was way ahead of it's time, JOHN DIES AT THE END.
it's low budget so some of the effects might not be the best but other than that, it's a great movie.
Very trippy and it covers things that became topical only in this decade.
The end reveal is really terrifying and it has stayed with me for the last 14 years.
I think this would be a hit if it came out now.

Don't look this movie up, just watch it.
By the time act 1 ends, you will be fully on board.
