Don't worry about the math. I drew a line that buying T&H gold up front justified a short periodic email explaining how half the donation was spent, with opinions on recent happenings, at Null's complete editorial discretion. I don't care if I'm a minority. Without politisperging too much, I believe the U.S. debt will come due in our lifetime, and that Null's hardship business experience is valuable. I'd be adding about 10% to my discretionary subscription budget, which currently comprises three expenses, two of which are for access to physical spaces.
To the extent the math matters, KF probably runs a cluster of frontends, so it's $1k each, not $1k total. This isn't a referendum on Null's income or ability, I already know it's criminally cheap for top engineering talent. I decided that because we now have a dollar amount to make the site sustainable, I want aggregate financial facts and hard-won opinions on how to run a small business when everything comes at a substantial cost and difficulty premium.
I don't want to lurk through whining forum posts about how constantly doubling down without compromise alienates you from society. The self-pitying is obnoxious because the reality is that a solid and diverse community of people wants him to succeed, and they have various ideas about what that means; for me, it's sharing the library of business and financial knowledge in his head. I want to feel invested in the overall project while treating the forum itself as a litmus test. Sometimes I feel like being immersed in the forum influences my thought process in negative ways.

So would you agree with this math
16k per month
-3k forum expenses
-6k (average estimate) personal expenses
=7k remaining per month
Of course that is pre taxes but 16k x 12 months = 192,000, so even after taxes it's above 100k, so I'll leave that to you to figure that part out.
So basically we are talking salt water aquarium and cyber truck level cash.

I'm sorry if I've missed your point but Josh himself said it costs 3k a month to run the site and he said his personal expenses are several thousand more than that, so I spose it could be 5k a month? I'd assume 6-10k a month.

Yeah, if we stay at this rate by 2027 I will be in a really fantastic position. I still have to do streams and keep that income coming in as well though.
That's why I'm really focused on improving the site and trying to find ways to get new people onboarded. The site has to grow and it's in a really difficult place at the moment. We're very censored by AI and search engines, and culturally we're lumped between X eating our dinner on politics, and a lot of edgy groups hate us for being too moralfaggy about lolicon and other third wires. To grow we're really going to need to prioritize our biggest strengths which is long term archival and organization. I'm working on that.
I'd also like to put together a volunteer news team to help the site spread its content out and get more eyes on it.

the community feature thread is already an excellent source of aggregated news content but the posts and the content it links to are old-school forum posts that are usually wordy and hard to doomscroll on phones like you can do on Facebook and Twitter. even the feature banners are awkward to view on a mobile device, which is what the majority of people use these days. what if, for community feature posts, you added three fields that people can fill out:
Title (100 characters max)
Summary (400 characters max)
Media (1)
when people make community happening posts they can optionally fill out this information. a title, a SHORT summary, and a picture or video. clicking on the entry will go to the forum post. the entries that have this information can be shown in an infinity scroll page that has cards that are easy to read for mobile devices. having a short-form content page or domain that has can easily be shared and consoomed by normies would help get the word out quite a bit
you could even include the banners in between the content cards for extra exposure, although the most consoomable content is going to be the title and a video of someone doing something stupid to laugh at

This sounds fun and something I'd be interested in contributing to.
A weekly newsletter of happenings written by users with various interests and topics, columns from the staff, etc. would be amusing. I for one would get much enjoyment about writing a weekly recap of happenings from the various CW threads I follow closely, as well as reading more curated content from other users.

What's the over-under on the new forum software? I recall you said you'd have more time to work on it when you started getting consistent income and some of the features discussed (community-editable OPs) would really help with thread collaboration and long-term archival.

The chat, media processor, and new search are all parts of the rewrite.
There is a design document that is planning everything out and it's near complete. Actually building the software will not be as complicated as testing it and getting the bugs out.

Unless plans have changed Null has clarified that sneedforo/the forum rewrite is going to be GPL-licensed and a free product of the USIPS.
I can't find the post now but I recall he also said that sneedforo will be backwards-compatible with XF extensions.
