Another issue with the whole Mitrice Richardson story: the police offered to have her stay in the station to call for a ride home after she was released from jail. She decided to just leave instead of calling her mother for a ride home. The police only keep arrested people in jail (in Los Angeles at least) until the morning when the person is drunk.
She also didn't know the area very well, and she was to my recollection in Malibu. However, a lot of Los Angeles has people at all hours, and the city doesn't really sleep, so she could have easily asked for help if she'd gone to the right places. I've been to the main LA areas, and there's people there all night. Pay phones still existed back then. And so did cell phones.
Mitrice was at the Lost Hills jail in Malibu. That area isn't like downtown LA and it's a lot quieter. It's where the rich types live. So she would have had no ride and she'd be walking a long way to downtown Los Angeles or Hollywood which would have constant activity.
It makes more sense that she wandered all night and then died in the hills, which would be very dark and pitch black until dawn. The smart thing to do would have been staying at the station until morning to call for a ride home to the mother. But she was crazy and manic so of course, she didn't go with the rational choice.
She tried to call her grandma or great-grandma who didn't pick up while locked up, the same one who tried to pay the bill for the restaurant using a credit card over the phone. For some reason she didn't call her mother.
My opinion as someone who can relate to her, instead of claiming she was murdered by the police, her parents should use their daughter as an example for why mental illness should be treated with medication and therapy, because if Mitrice had been treating it, she'd probably still be alive.
