Creepy Unsolved Mysteries - From unsolved murders to unidentified people to unexplained supernatural events, what are some of the creepiest unsolved mysteries you've ever heard of?

Take this with a grain of salt since it's just rumors going around in the comments, but Yuki's mother might be pregnant which is why they married. The killer also has an ex-wife and a 10 year old son, to make things worse.

I can vouch for this. My grandma is believed to have been conceived before her mother married my Irish Catholic great grandfather before her mother gave birth.

My grandma told me and my mom that her father was always harsher to her than her siblings who were all children of her father. He was kind of meaner to her.

To this day my grandma has no idea about the rumors if her conception.

Apparently step-moms and dads are taboo in Japan? Like they're treated as how bastard kids are treated in the west, right?
What I understand is that being a single mother essentially tanks your marriage prospects. In a divorce or separation the mother almost always takes the kids, and if she wants to start a new family oftentimes the kids are left with relatives (grandparents typically).

It would be unusual for a guy to be okay with becoming a stepdad.

The mystery is that we never know how the poster is going to make these old cases about themselves. Sometimes they claim the entire case was a coverup for a government conspiracy, other times it's because the case reminded them of a dream they had about their grandpa. All I know is that this thread has way fewer instances of banned pedophile usernames than the conspiracy theories one does.

need more area 51

My favorite Area 51 story is the one that says the roswell crash was a soviet plot. Stalin wanted to scare the Americans with his science, so he remote-piloted a captured nazi anti-grav ship like Die Glocke, crewed by humans modified by Mengele experimentation. It was supposed to cause a War of the Worlds style-hysteria across America. That one comes from Annie Jacobson's book Area 51, most of the book was a sober and informative look at things like the sr-71 and the u-2, then at the end veers off into complete weirdness with the roswell theorizing.

I swear that the Mounties only hire the most inept people alive if these mysteries say anything.
Yes, but also these stories are not atypical of natives. Spend any amount of time around them and you'll hear all of this repeated verbatim. Protection orders ignored, victims returning to the abuser, rampant drug abuse, weeks long disappearances and overall just terrible choices and putting themselves in awful situations.

It's an impossible task to track one person across three cities hundreds of kilometres apart, now imagine getting a bunch of calls like that on a single day and also dealing with regular crime.

The natives in Canada only exist to be murdered, raped, go missing, get abused by the government, as prostitutes, and drug abusers. It's sad when you think about it in the grand scheme of things.

A big part of the problem is an unwillingness to look at the actual root causes, and instead blame the government/white people.

At the very end of the day the issue stems from the refusal to abolish the Indian Act because it would mean the current system of chiefs and band councils would be abolished, and it's the Indian Act that allows them to keep grifting.

And now the movement to try and improve the outcomes for native women has itself been colonized by troons. These stories will just keep happening.

Going through the Canadian checklist:

✅ Dead in rural British Columbia
✅ First Nations
✅ Potentially last seen with an unknown white man
✅ RCMP doing the bungling this time
✅ Drugs, alcohol, or prostitution may or may not be involved
✅ Tim Horton’s was involved

That did check off all the boxes!

It is a shame. Pretty standard story of First Nations people succumbing to various vices in life, which put them in greater exposure to domestic violence and of course, killings.

Once again it’s mind blowing how bad the RCMP is. Seems like it’s easier to at least try to solve the case instead of just ignoring it and then scrambling later.

It’s Friday, January 25th, 2019, 25 year old Kristofer “Kris” Couture finishes work at a construction site in Maple Ridge, British Columbia. This is his last day on this job site. He already has another job lined up for the following Monday at a new site for a new company. Kris returns home to Burnaby, but it is unclear exactly where Kris is living at this time as he only told his mother that it was in Burnaby. He did not give her an address. Later that day, he goes to the Good Life Fitness at Northgate Village Shopping Centre. Kris is very fit and spends a lot of time at the gym. The staff there remember his face, but no one recalls ever having interacted with him.

This is a turbulent time in Kris’ life. He visited his family in his hometown of Edmonton, Alberta over the holidays. He got into a dispute with his mother, Eva, when he asked her for money. Kris lives an itinerant lifestyle. He frequently travels between Edmonton and the Metro Vancouver area. He works roofing and construction jobs when he can and often relies on his mother sending him money to pay his bills during periods of unemployment. Eva decides it’s time for tough love. She tells him it’s time to get a stable job. She doesn’t care if it’s Walmart as long as it’s stable employment, he needs to act like an adult and pay his own way.

Kris leaves Edmonton angry in his 2003 Saturn Ion. To punish Eva, he gives her the silent treatment and ignores her texts about his mail going to her address until the 25th. He tells her he would change his address and to hang on to his mail via text message. This is the last contact Eva will ever have with her youngest son. According to Eva, Kris’ phone shows no activity after the 25th. It is still unknown why his phone stopped working.

The next morning Kris goes to the Royal Columbian Hospital in nearby New Westminster. Due to British Columbian and broader Canadian privacy legislation, it is unknown why he was there. Not even his mother can be told this information. Kris then buys groceries at a Save On Foods near the hospital. Some have found it strange that Kris would go to a hospital in New Westminster rather than Burnaby, but the cities border each other and Royal Columbian is 3.3 km (2 miles) directly south of his gym which is presumably near wherever he was living.

On Sunday, January 27th, an off-duty Royal Canadian Mounted Police officer goes hiking on the Elk-Thurston Trail on Elk Mountain near Chilliwack, BC. This is about an hour away from Burnaby. The trailhead has a parking lot. Kris’ Saturn Ion is here. The rear window has been smashed. The RCMP member calls it in and tags the vehicle with a sticker denoting that the police consider it abandoned and warning that it is at risk of being towed. Over the next 90 days the car will be reported to the police over, and over and over again. The damage to the car continuously worsens. By May all the windows are smashed out, the trunk has been broken into, the ignition is punched out, the steering column is broken, and the licence plate has been stolen.

Kris does not show up for his new job on Monday. This is quite common in the construction industry. No one at the new company knows Kris, so they make no further efforts to contact him nor notify anyone that he didn’t show up for work.

On February 12th, someone uses Kris’ Bank of Montreal debit card at a gas station in Chilliwack. On April 3rd, a man uses Kris’s driver licence and passport to attempt to rent a car in his name. The man evidently didn’t look much like Kris, so the rental company refuses and reports it to the police. On April 13th, a woman breaks into a barn near Chilliwack. The property owners call the police and she is arrested. She has Kris’ pay stubs in her backpack at the time of her arrest. On April 14th, someone attempts to use Kris’ BMO debit card again but the transaction is declined. On the 30th, someone tries again. This transaction is also declined.

On May 17th, a letter to Kris from the Chilliwack RCMP arrives at Eva’s home. It says that his car will be impounded and destroyed if it is not moved, and he will be billed for it. Eva calls the Chilliwack RCMP and reports Kris missing that day. On the 18th, Eva receives a call from the Chilliwack RCMP informing her that the car has been towed and she will have to cover the costs. The call comes in after Eva has gone to bed and is left on her voice mail. During interviews Eva explains that the RCMP seemed more concerned with whom they could bill for towing the car than with finding her son. There’s no record of any RCMP initiated searches for him.

Kris’ driver’s licence would later be recovered when a man is arrested and found to have it in his possession. His passport and licence plate remain missing. RCMP have concluded that the various individuals found in possession of Kris’ IDs, debit card, and pay stubs stole them after breaking into his car, and that they had no connections to Kris otherwise. Eva and her family arrange two searches of Elk Mountain in 2019. Local search and rescue volunteer groups joins even employing their cadaver dogs. Nothing is found. Numerous sightings of Kris have been reported. None have panned out. Eva continuous to organise occasional volunteer searches of the Elk Mountain area when she can and makes media appearances to raise awareness.

Strangely, no one has ever come forward as Kris’ roommate or landlord. It’s unknown what happened to most of his personal possessions. He doesn’t seem to have had even a single friend in British Columbia who noticed he was missing.

I assume this information would tell the story pretty quickly about what is going on but it would run counter to the narrative. I tried searching more information about Amber on Google and got pages lecturing me on stereotypes of indigenous women. Seems like we’re just not supposed to know key details.

I did look up Katie Ballantyne and information was readily available that she sold herself for crack cocaine. But this happened several years prior before political correctness went into overdrive so I assume it was more acceptable to provide more information about her. For Amber it seemed like preserving The Narrative ™️ was the most important thing.

There's a reason why all the true crime podcasts made a big show about how they were going to start covering more missing indigenous women and then never did. Because once you do, you realize instantly that the social justice narrative is bullshit and these women are victims of their own people and there's no way to spin it otherwise.

There's one missing person's case that bugs the hell out of me because I don't remember the name of the woman who disappeared, but I know some of her story. I can never find details about her story because I don't know her name. But her story showed up on a random YouTube video once and I haven't been able to remember her name since.
All I remember is that it was a young woman, and she wrote some texts to her mother (or her father, I'm pretty sure it was one of her parents) and then disappeared after. And her texts were apparently cryptic from what I recalled when it came to the mother's details. I think she was supposed to arrive home and then disappeared on the way back.

I did a search for a while and I'm pretty sure I found the woman. Katelin Akens. She was supposed to go to the airport, went missing after she sent some texts to her family saying her phone was going to die, and she hasn't been seen since.

Here's her details:

Katelin Akens is a teen girl who disappeared after her former stepfather (James) was taking her to the airport so she could get on a flight to cosmetology school.
On the way to the airport, her mother (Lisa) reported getting very suspicious messages from her daughter. At first, Katelin said something came up and she wouldn't be able to talk, but would let her mother know when she got a new flight. Then, a few hours later, she said she was at the airport then sent a second text saying that her phone would die. Lisa said that Katelin NEVER double texted, so it set off a red flag.

Even later, Katelin messaged Lisa and said she was staying with a friend and needed to be left alone. Those messages, however, were pinged near James' house. Amber, Katelin's fiancé, also said she got suspicious messages saying that she cheated and can never come back home despite having said earlier that she was excited to see her again when she was back.

Two days later, Katelin's suitcase was found a few miles from James' home. It was clearly thrown and contained all of her things, including her plane ticket, but her clothes and diploma were missing.

All messages sent from Katelin's phone were sent near James' house. He also agreed to a polygraph, but opted out. His phone was encrypted and he refused to unlock it... Katelin's phone was encrypted as well. He also told police that he actually dropped her off at a mall to get public transport to the airport instead; there was no evidence of either of them being near it (no phone pings, witnesses, video surveillance could place them there). The stepdad has since stopped cooperating in the case. I've also heard that while searching near Katelin's suitcase, the body of another woman, named Heather, was found.

I tried looking up any information on him and there’s nothing that you haven’t covered already. Looks like he had no friends, or at least friends that would want to come forward. One site thought maybe he committed suicide and that may very well be the case. He seemed to be more into gyms than hikes. The people who had his pay stubs, card, etc. could very well be from break ins than anything else. If he was as big of a gym bro as they claim, it’s less likely that he was into drugs or alcohol but who knows. Seems like this guy disappeared for days at a time so he definitely had some secret life that nobody wants to share and that may include his mother. Sometimes parents can be in denial about that.

In an interview his mom says he was a health nut who only drank water. I think suicide is very possible. His dad died just before Kris graduated high school, and he was supposedly withdrawn and introverted after that.

mekayla_bali.webp mekayla-missing2.webp

It’s April, 2016 in Yorkton, Saskatchewan, a small prairie city in eastern Saskatchewan that is home to about 16,000 people. There Paula Bali, a consultant for the Ministry of Social Services, lives with her mother, sister and three children. Paula’s eldest is her 16 year old daughter, Mekayla Bali. Mekayla is a short, thin, shy theatre nerd who wears glasses, dyes her hair often, and feels insecure about her acne and the chicken pox scars on her face. She doesn’t know who her dad is. She has some friends at school, but complains online that she’s lonely and has no friends. She makes multiple social media accounts under different aliases. Paula will later claim that Mekayla had no history of behavioural or mental health issues, but the rows of self-harm scars on her thighs say otherwise.

Mekayla has been making some odd claims at school. She’s been telling her friends that she has over $5,000 saved up and is going to take a vacation soon. She used to talk about leaving Yorkton a lot, but had stopped bringing it up. Now she’s talking about it again. Her family are not planning a vacation. She has occasionally been sending friends cryptic texts saying that she’s unhappy and needs help, but won’t elaborate. She gets a friend to drive her to the local branch of TD Bank suggesting it has to do with that five grand she has saved up, but ends up depositing $25. Mekayla doesn’t have $5,000. Not even close.

On the morning of Tuesday, April 12th at 6:41 AM, Mekayla is texting her friend asking to go to the bank again. Her friend tells her that the bank won’t open for several more hours. As usual, Mekayla’s grandmother gives her a ride to school. Once there, she puts some things in her locker and then leaves through a rear door at 8:30 AM. She first goes to Terry's Pawn and Bargain where she attempts to sell a silver ring. It’s not worth anything so the proprietor declines to make her an offer. She then walks to the bank and withdraws $55.

Her next stop is a combined local Tim Hortons and Wendy’s location arriving at 9:10 AM. This was a bizarre partnership that the two brands had entered into and a few can still be found around Canada to this day. She buys a drink, sits down at a table, and can be seen disassembling and reassembling her phone on CCTV footage. She then exits the store and immediately re-enters only to exit again through a different door.

CCTV shows that Mekayla then walked around the Tim Hortons in a large circle for 25 minutes. She then returns to the Tim Hortons and seems to be texting extensively. She also makes a phone call that lasts for some time. She texts a friend from school saying, “[h]ey, I need help" but quickly follows up with, "[n]evermind I figured it out".

At 10:43 AM, she approaches an older woman whom she does not know and explains that she wants to rent a hotel room but can’t because she’s underage. She asks if the woman will rent it for her. Wisely, the woman declines. Mekayla uses her phone again and then leaves the restaurant at 10:45 AM. She then walks to a nearby Saskatchewan Transportation Company (STC) bus depot. The STC was a Crown corporation that was responsible for providing intercity bus routes in Saskatchewan at the time. At the depot, Mekayla asks an employee when the next bus to Regina leaves. The employee tells her it leaves at 5:00 PM. She leaves without buying a ticket. Regina is the provincial capital and has a population of around a quarter of a million people. It’s about 188 km (~117 miles) southwest of Yorkton. To a small town prairie girl like Mekayla, Regina is the big city.

At 11:35 AM, Mekayla texts a friend to say she’ll see her at lunch. She then returns to school and spends lunch at the cafeteria with her two friends. During lunch she tells her friends that she is taking the bus to Regina to go on vacation. She leaves the school at 12:03 PM. She next arrives at the Trail Stop Restaurant which is attached to the STC depot. She orders and eats food there. Witnesses are unclear on when she left placing it between 1:00 and 1:45 PM. At the restaurant, she is seen with a muscular, dark-haired man who has a noteworthy fiery cross tattoo on his forearm. This man will be publicly named as a person of interest in the case. He voluntarily contacts the police. He wasn’t with Mekayla. He doesn’t know her. He simply held the door open for her as he’s polite and courteous. He’s cleared by police, but he is the last known person to see Mekayla. She isn’t captured on any CCTV footage after leaving the STC depot.

When Mekayla’s grandmother goes to pick her up at school, she is told that she missed all of her classes that day. She then calls Paula and the two spend hours looking for her before calling the Yorkton detachment of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. The RCMP actually take this one seriously, and launch an immediate investigation. They confirm Mekayla did not leave on a bus. They review essentially all of the CCTV footage in Yorkton. They search a wooded area near her school. They learn that her phone was deactivated on the morning of the 13th. They check all of her known social media accounts. They arrange interviews with some online friends who don’t even live in Canada, and often barely know Mekayla. They successfully subpoena records from multiple American social media companies but this takes months and leads to nothing. Her social media activity stopped on April 12th.

All of the RCMP’s digital forensics efforts seem to have been thwarted by a 16 year old girl and Kik. When the RCMP see the Tim Hortons footage they get her phone records and find no evidence that she texted or called anyone other than those couple texts to school friends. She was connected to the Tim Hortons WiFi, and according to her friends from school, likely using Kik. None of them used Kik to communicate with Mekayla. They knew she used it, but they don’t know her username nor with whom she was communicating. The RCMP have not been able to overcome this obstacle. They know nothing about her activity on Kik.

Initially, Paula thought she had runaway, but changed her mind when she saw that Mekayla had left a bunch of cash in her room along with her acne medication. She was very sensitive about her acne and would not have left it behind.

This case received huge coverage in Canada and international attention because of its popularity on YouTube. Many tips came into the police and continue to. None have led to anything fruitful. If she’s still alive, Mekayla would now be 26 years old. There is a $100,000 CAD reward for any information that leads to her whereabouts.

After years it looks like the stepfather is finally going to be brought to justice for Katelin Akens. He was arrested about ten days ago on sex charges.

I found his mugshot and booking information listed here:

More detailed case that involved him:
Springfield, Virginia 19 years old Dec. 5th 2015

Case:•Katelin was supposed to fly back to her home in Arizona. She lived with her fiancé, Amber. •Her flight was scheduled for 5:00pm. •Her former step-father, James Brandon was going to take her to the airport. •James had to work at 3:00pm, so he would’ve had to drop Katelin off at airport early. •Katelin originally went back home to get her high school diploma. She would’ve been starting cosmetology school soon. •9:20am - Katelin’s mom, Lisa stayed at James house with Katelin for a little bit. She states James was excited to see them, Katelin told him about her cosmetology school/diploma. Lisa then left the house to go to work.

•11:56am- Amber gets a text from Katelin’s phone. It says, “Something came up. I’m not coming back today, I’ll let you know when I get a new flight.” In a separate text, she immediately texts, “I won’t be able to text for a bit.” (Unsure if they ever disclosed where her phone pinged at this time.)

•1:52pm- James texts Lisa saying he dropped Katelin off at the airport. Lisa replied thanking him and asking about traffic. He replied that the traffic was “not too bad”.(According to online, James then sent a text to Lisa about how her dropped her off at the Springfield mall and Katelin was going to take a metro to the airport. The sites/interviews with Lisa I have not seen this.)

2:00 pm- Katelin’s phone texted Lisa saying she’s at the airport. She then proceeds to send another text that her battery is going to die. Lisa doesn’t believe this was Katelin, claiming she never double texts. Also the phone was pinged near James house at the time of this text. Sometime after this, Amber texts Lisa saying how Katelin texted her about not coming back. Lisa was confused due to texts from Katelin’s phone to her.

7:15pm- Lisa gets texts from Katelin’s phone saying she’s staying with a friend and needs sometime alone. These texts were pinged by interstate 95- Stafford county. Also near James house. This was the late texts that ever came from Katelin’s phone.

•James told police he had dropped Katelin off at the Springfield mall. Where she was going to take a metro to the airport. There is no camera footage of Katelin at any locations, neither is there footage of James anywhere. •Amber had said a Facebook message was sent from Katelin’s account saying she can’t come back because she cheated on her. This was odd to Amber. They haven’t had any recent fights, this was in character of Katelin and Katelin’s family stated she was excited to go back home to Amber. •Katelin did not act out of ordinary that day. Her family says they would’ve noticed if something was wrong. •Katelin’s Facebook also messaged a friend, in the message it stated how she didn’t want to be in Virginia nor did she want to be in Arizona. •Katelin did in fact cheat on Amber the night before. Katelin was with a friend and her boyfriend. Katelin told another friend that those two “forced themselves on her” and said that all three of them had sex. Katelin stated to this friend she felt remorseful and awful about the entire thing. Alcohol was involved this night.

•Dec. 7th 2015 - Katelin’s suitcase was found in a ditch on an interstate outside Fredericksburg, Virginia - a few miles from James house. It contained her phone charger, glasses, wallet/cash, credit/debt cards, and her plane ticket. No clothes were found and her diploma was missing. The suitcase was scuffed and had a wheel missing. This leads investigators to believe the suitcase was thrown. •James never showed up to work that day, or ever again. •James was not cooperative in this investigation. His phone is encrypted and he will not give up the passcode. He also agreed to a polygraph, then denied on the day off. His house and vehicle were searched. His DNA was also collected. •Katelin had an encrypted text app on her phone that has yet to be recovered. •Katelin’s phone never pinged far from James house. •Friend of Katelin claimed she had told him that James was verbally abusive - never said if he was physically abusive.

James Robert Branton's booking and mugshot:

I'm currently archiving it. Here's the archive.

Court documents filed Friday allege Branton sexually abused Akens and her younger sister beginning in 2006, when Akens was 10 and her sister was 7. The abuse allegedly continued until 2011.

her case is exceptionally sad. an absentee father, going through self image issues, a mother who has no idea what's going on in her head and feeling socially ostracized. i always felt, especially with the fact that she took her phone apart, that she was groomed by an older guy who told her what she wanted to hear on kik. different SIM card in the phone to keep their relationship a secret and a clandestine meeting and she was never heard from again.
