Americans SHOULD walk more and SHOULD utilize public transit more. Too bad our country sold its soul out to the car lobby and the rubber lobby back in the 1950s and turned us into a nation of gas guzzling lunatics who are so dependent on cars to get around. Cities like LA used to have extensive street car networks, all wiped away by the car lobby.
The average American / American family doesn’t need more than one car, doesn’t need an SUV or mega truck and would be just fine with a sedan, doesn’t need to drive the half mile to their kids’ school — and yet MUH FREEDUMS have convinced (the poorest and most stupid of us) that these things are necessary and required to have a decent life.
Hi. I am a cyclist. I ride my bike to work every day. I love my bike and I wish that public transport was widespread across the US. I want to try and explain the practical reasons as to why it's not and why it's impractical or impossible for most.
99% of the problem with public transit is comical mismanagement. I have been threatened by homeless people on the bus. My girlfriend and mother have been threatened. Other women (some with babies or young children) have regaled me with tales of unstable psychos walking around train cars talking about how much they want to kill someone. The police do not do anything about criminals on public transportation and when they do it's only when someone gets murdered...in which case the psycho pleads the Retarded Nigger Defense ("cannot stand trial due to disability/competency") and are put back on the streets by judges and progressive DAs because they view themselves as social justice warriors rather than prosecutors charged with keeping the public safe.
If you bring this up with public transport enthusiasts, they will gleefully let you know that they also do not care, that the insane psychotics who walk around with knives threatening to kill people are just part and parcel of public transport and really you should feel bad for them anyways because socioeconomic factors and colonialism blahblahblah. This is absurd. People should not have to deal with retarded criminals assaulting and murdering innocent people on the bus or the train because progs would feel bad about jailing them. They shouldn't have to worry a retarded criminal is going to stab them in the neck and then get off on the Retarded Nigger Defense. People drive in cars and live in suburbs only accessible by car because it means they don't have to deal with feral animals on the bus.
There is also the issue of comical mismanagement of public transportation projects. California in particular has spent billions on their bullet train pet project and, even after decades, they're not done and are predicting it will cost something like 121 billion. Honolulu has spent 50 billion trying to put their transit together and they're saying it won't be done until 2031
at the earliest. There are similar stories all around the US.
The secret of "car culture" is that if you get off of reddit and actually talk to people who drive, they'll probably be ambivalent about cars at best (unless they're super into a brand like Ford or whatever). Nobody likes having to spend thousands on a car (especially after Obama genocided the used car market with Cash For Clunkers) and then thousands more on repairs, maintenance, etc. They'd love if there was a convenient, clean train or bus line in their town. Public transit fanatics want the Tokyo Metro without doing any of the things that make the Tokyo Metro good.
(And before anyone says anything: yes, I know that $CITY_YOU_LIVE_IN is perfect and great and all the trains are on time and you actually arrest violent criminals. but those areas are majority White and public transit fanatics, who are mostly progressive, see that as a problem too.)
