Americans SHOULD walk more and SHOULD utilize public transit more. Too bad our country sold its soul out to the car lobby and the rubber lobby back in the 1950s and turned us into a nation of gas guzzling lunatics who are so dependent on cars to get around. Cities like LA used to have extensive street car networks, all wiped away by the car lobby.

The average American / American family doesn’t need more than one car, doesn’t need an SUV or mega truck and would be just fine with a sedan, doesn’t need to drive the half mile to their kids’ school — and yet MUH FREEDUMS have convinced (the poorest and most stupid of us) that these things are necessary and required to have a decent life.

I think it's more that it's difficult to find neighborhoods people would like to live in (especially if raising kids) so it's easier to feel comfortable just moving further out into the suburbs.

Tons of people see the wealthy parts of cities that have walkable neighborhoods and love the shit out of it, but then that also requires decent policing, honest enough people living there that crime doesn't drive away business, and real estate being allowed to be used for mixed use real estate (like where you have restaurants shopping on the first floor and residential above).

There are also problems of needing apartments or condos built up with more than two bedrooms so people could really have normal sized families living in some denser areas. But that brings in its own challenges to try and get stuff like that built up. So lot of people feel forced into these weirdly arranged residential areas where you kinda have to drive quite a bit to do anything.
