Last month, the man who killed Grandpa Vicha walked out(opens in new tab) of a San Francisco courtroom free.

On Jan. 28, 2021, Antoine Watson sprinted across the street in Anza Vista and body-slammed 84-year-old Vicha Ratanapakdee to the pavement. Ratanapakdee’s head cracked on the concrete. He never woke up. He died two days later from a brain hemorrhage.

In March, Judge Linda Colfax sentenced Watson to eight years for involuntary manslaughter and assault, gave him credit for five years served, and released him on probation. Vicha’s daughter Monthanus Ratanapakdee said what every sane person was thinking: “When consequences do not match the harm, it sends the wrong message about protecting our seniors and public safety.” District Attorney Brooke Jenkins was more blunt: “Justice was not served.”

The going rate for an 84-year-old Asian life in San Francisco is five years in county jail. How did we get here?

This is not a failure of one judge or one jury. It is what happens when a narrow set of organizations claims to speak for the Asian community while advancing a framework that treats punishment and policing as suspect — and when the state rewards that framework with enormous institutional legitimacy and money.

Our community was misrepresented. And the organizations that misrepresented us were paid millions to do it.

The hijack

In 2020 and 2021, a horrifying wave of attacks(opens in new tab) on elderly Asian Americans swept San Francisco and New York. Ordinary immigrant families demanded two simple things: that the attacks stop, and that the attackers face real consequences. That organic fury produced the hashtag #StopAsianHate. It was a demand for accountability — real consequences for real violence.

Stop AAPI Hate launched on March 19, 2020, deliberately positioned to ride that wave. Its goals were to document anti-Asian hate and influence policy. Its founders — Chinese for Affirmative Action, the AAPI Equity Alliance, and San Francisco State’s Asian American studies department — moved quickly to capture the narrative, claim the mantle of “the community response,” and position themselves to absorb the flood of funding that followed.

They succeeded. But they didn’t end up fighting for what the community actually wanted.

The betrayal

What began as a call for protection became a critique of punishment itself.

Stop AAPI Hate did not merely document anti-Asian violence. It helped redefine the acceptable response to it.

The coalition’s public language makes this explicit. It champions(opens in new tab) “comprehensive, non-carceral solutions” and views policing-centered responses with suspicion, arguing that “carceral solutions, like policing, disproportionately harm Black and brown communities.” It opposes expanding hate-crime penalties. When the federal COVID-19 Hate Crimes Act passed, the organization publicly welcomed the bill while criticizing its criminal-law emphasis — taking credit with one hand; undermining the mechanism with the other. It co-signed letters arguing(opens in new tab) that tougher penalties give “a false sense of comfort.”

The coalition’s founders stated their intentions out loud. In February 2021 — the month Ratanapakdee was fatally attacked — cofounder Russell Jeung told the Stanford Daily(opens in new tab): “We don’t need more mass incarceration, we need more racial healing and solidarity.” In March 2022, all three founders wrote in Time(opens in new tab) that “the problem with investing in ineffective solutions like policing is that they keep us from adopting methods that will actually make us safer.”

They were not alone. More than 85 Asian American organizations cosigned the letter opposing the federal COVID-19 Hate Crimes Act. Jason Wu of Gay Asian & Pacific Islander Men of New York, speaking to NBC News, explained the coalition’s reasoning while citing the case of Yao Pan Ma, a 61-year-old Chinese man who was beaten while collecting cans and died after months in a coma: “Hate crimes, prosecution and incarceration of the attacker does nothing to address those needs.”
The result was not a community speaking with one voice. It was a narrow ideological layer speaking over the immigrant families and elderly Asians who wanted the simplest thing in the world: Protect us, arrest the people doing this, and punish them when they kill. But that wasn’t what Stop AAPI Hate wanted. Its own 2025 survey, conducted with NORC at the University of Chicago, undermines its entire advocacy platform. The single most popular policy actions(opens in new tab) among AAPI adults surveyed were increased punishments for hate crimes and greater police presence. The consensus Stop AAPI Hate sold to Sacramento and Washington doesn’t exist — and the organization’s own data proves it.

The money

California ratified Stop AAPI Hate’s worldview with enormous institutional backing, which meant that the state’s taxpayers funded it at an industrial scale. In February 2021, California ratified AB 85, appropriating $1.4 million(opens in new tab) for work tied to Stop AAPI Hate, including funding to its three coalition partners and UCLA-run research projects. Assemblymember Phil Ting championed the allocation.

In July 2021, California ratified the API Equity Budget. The AAPI Legislative Caucus described it as a $166.5 million, three-year investment. NBC News was more specific(opens in new tab) about what it purchased: “a $156 million investment in noncarceral alternatives to combating violence against Asian Americans.” The package included $10 million that went directly to the Stop AAPI Hate coalition, $110 million to community organizations, $10 million for “restorative justice programs” in schools, and millions more for ethnic media. Additional rounds followed — $14 million in March 2022, $30.3 million in July 2022, continued funding in 2023, and a $2 million federal Justice Department grant to CAA in October 2024.

CAA, the fiscal sponsor of Stop AAPI Hate, swelled accordingly. ProPublica’s nonprofit data shows revenue(opens in new tab) of $16.8 million and total assets of $49 million in 2023. By 2024, revenue had climbed to $19.7 million and total assets to $52.3 million. CAA’s own audited financials show roughly $19.8 million in net assets designated specifically for Stop AAPI Hate. Top officers drew six-figure salaries. Hundreds of thousands went to media strategy.

The money didn’t buy what it promised. FBI data shows that the number of anti-Asian hate crime incidents went from 161 in 2019 to a peak of 746 in 2021(opens in new tab), then declined to 379 in 2024 (opens in new tab)(the most recent data) — but remains nearly three times higher than pre-pandemic averages, according to Advancing Justice-AAJC’s analysis of the FBI’s August 2025 release(opens in new tab). Five years and $166.5 million in “non-carceral solutions” later, we are not back to baseline.

Ting called it “a historic investment in the API community.” It was a historic investment in the organizations that claimed to represent the API community. There is a difference.

The outcome

No advocacy group controls a courtroom. But juries and judges do not operate in a vacuum. They absorb the same narrative environment as everyone else — the op-eds, the policy briefs, the grant-funded studies, the ethnic media coverage, the sense of what “the community” supposedly wants. For years, California’s most institutionally empowered anti-hate organizations used public money and public legitimacy to argue against policing- and punishment-centered responses, even as many Asian elders and immigrant families wanted exactly those responses. That is the water Watson’s jury swam in.

They saw the video of an 84-year-old man being body-slammed to death. They convicted Watson of assault. They declined to call it murder. They declined to call it elder abuse. They deliberated for roughly six hours.

Colfax’s record speaks for itself. In the 2021 Union Square smash-and-grab cases(opens in new tab), the judge sentenced Kimberly Cherry to Primary Caregiver Diversion — zero days incarcerated — over the DA’s objection.

Stop AAPI Hate claims to speak for the Asian community. It does not. Monthanus Ratanapakdee does. The families who showed up to every hearing do. The elderly residents who are still afraid to walk to the grocery store do.

Ratanapakdee’s killer is free. Monthanus goes home tonight without her father. CAA has already filed its next grant application. And another day ends without justice for our community.

They probably rejected a bunch of Da'Tavon, La'Quisha and Shitavious, then sighed and went with Antoine as the least bad option.
You can tell it's bad when even Wikipedia admits the killer is black.

In contrast you have this white washing of things.
PRESS RELEASE: After a month-long trial, a jury acquitted Antoine Watson of first- and second-degree murder and elder abuse from a highly publicized January 2021 incident. The jury convicted Watson of involuntary manslaughter and assault for pushing Vicha Ratanapakdee, who later died from the fall. Jurors reviewed extensive evidence that refuted widespread misinformation that circulated after a viral video clip.

Fair Verdict Reached After Month-long Trial of Antoine Watson that Clarified Misinformation

SAN FRANCISCO—After a month-long trial, a San Francisco jury acquitted Antoine Watson of first- and second-degree murder as well as elder abuse from a highly publicized January 2021 incident. On Jan. 16, the jury returned convictions of involuntary manslaughter and felony assault for Watson’s pushing of Vicha Ratanapakdee, who later died from the fall. Jurors reviewed extensive evidence and testimony, including full surveillance footage of the incident shown by the defense. That evidence refuted widespread rumors and misinformation that circulated after a short video clip of the incident went viral in the days following the incident.

Jury, Verdict, and Sentencing

The jury—composed of twelve San Franciscans of different ethnicities, ages, and professional backgrounds—deliberated for several hours before rendering a verdict on Jan. 16:

  • Rejecting the murder charge after finding that Watson did not have the intent to kill or understand that his actions could cause death.
  • Rejecting the elder abuse charge, concluding that Ratanapakdee’s age was not apparent at the brief moment of the encounter, as his head and face were largely obscured by a hat and mask.
  • Finding Watson guilty of involuntary manslaughter and assault likely to cause great bodily injury; and finding true allegations that he inflicted injury on a person over 70, and that person became comatose.
After the verdict, prosecutors requested that the jury hear further arguments on three aggravating factors. On Jan. 28, jurors returned their findings. They rejected the allegation that Watson is a “serious danger to society.” They found that the victim was “particularly vulnerable” and that the “crime involved callousness, or cruelty, or viciousness.” The prosecution withdrew a fourth allegation of “planning or sophistication” due to lack of evidence.

Watson faces a maximum statutory sentence of 7 to 9 years. He has spent the last five years in S.F. County Jail and will be sentenced at an upcoming hearing.

“We thank the jury for listening to the testimony, carefully evaluating the facts in evidence, and rendering a fair verdict in accordance with the law,” said Deputy Public Defender Anita Nabha. “Antoine Watson was a 19-year-old in distress who made a terrible, impulsive decision with devastating consequences. The jury correctly found that he had no intent to kill and no knowledge of Mr. Ratanapakdee’s race or age at the time.”

Evidence and Testimony Dispelled Widespread Misinformation

Although the District Attorney’s Office did not allege a hate crime due to lack of evidence of bias, public perception of the case was shaped by widespread assumptions of racial bias. Trial evidence showed that Watson could not see Ratanapakdee’s race because his features were obscured by a brimmed baseball cap pulled down over his forehead and a surgical mask pulled up high. Two independent witnesses—who came up close to Ratanapakdee while he was on the ground—corroborated that his race was not apparent and testified that they thought he was white.

The defense also addressed persistent misinformation about Watson’s actions after the push. Based on evidence obtained by police and prosecutors, it was revealed at trial that:

  • Cell phone records showed Watson was on the phone with his mom when he first went back to check on Ratanapakdee, but Watson did not take any pictures.
  • Surveillance video showed that Watson went back twice to check on Ratanapakdee.
  • There was no evidence or testimony of Watson ‘celebrating’ afterwards. Rather, an independent witness, located by the police, testified that Watson sounded like he was in “agony” after the push.
All available surveillance footage was admitted into evidence for the jurors to review.

The Defense Presented Context that the Prosecution Ignored

Deputy Public Defender Bao Doan
, who assisted Nabha in the trial, said that, “It was important for us to show the bigger context to the jury because the prosecution only wanted to show the jury the moment of the push and ignore all other evidence that did not support their pursuit of a murder conviction.”

On the morning of Jan. 28, 2021, Watson was in a state of emotional distress that had been building since the night before. It started with him leaving an upsetting family situation, going on a drive with his girlfriend, and colliding with a parked car. Evidence showed that when police arrived at that scene, an officer pointed a gun at Watson and handcuffed him before releasing him with a citation. As Watson and his girlfriend drove away, they began to experience car trouble. They drove to the Anza Vista neighborhood, where Watson had spent time growing up at his great-grandmother’s house. Video footage showed that Watson was visibly distressed when he parked around 3 a.m. and again just before 8 a.m. when the car would not start. Cell phone records obtained by the prosecution affirmed that Watson called his mother for help.

Just after 8 a.m., Watson got out of his car, punched another parked car, and started running down the street yelling and crying—which was corroborated by witnesses who heard screaming that was described as sounding like a “distressed” person and “like something [was] terribly wrong.”

Watson testified that he was crying, upset, and “wasn’t thinking right” when he pushed a man he misperceived to be staring at him. He didn’t realize how hard he had pushed him until afterwards. He said that he only noticed Ratanapakdee’s gray hair when he returned to check on him.

Nabha, Watson’s attorney, argued that he did not have the time or forethought to think that a push would lead to someone’s death. Watson was 19 years old at the time, and the defense called an expert in adolescent brain development to educate the jurors about impulsive behavior and lack of forethought.

Video footage showed that Watson returned to check on Ratanapakdee a second time, which is when he saw that someone was already on the phone calling for help. Watson testified that he left in “shock and panic.” He also said that he was ashamed of the way he acted and was sorry for the pain he had caused to the victim’s family and his own.

A Community in Need of Healing and Resources

“I extend my deepest sympathies to Mr. Ratanapakdee’s family for the heartbreaking loss of a beloved father and grandfather,” said San Francisco Public Defender Mano Raju.

“This tragic incident garnered significant attention at a time when the President of the United States was stoking racism against Asian American communities, and that broader climate understandably shaped public reaction,” said Raju. “Our legal system exists to examine facts carefully and without assumption. This was a fair and thorough trial, and we appreciate the jurors’ careful review of the evidence. My hope is that our communities can move forward by investing in restorative processes that prioritize healing for individuals harmed.”

Watson’s defense team included Deputy Public Defenders Anita Nabha and Bao Doan, Investigator Jesse Huber, Paralegal Miluska Sifuentes, and Youth Defender Social Worker Christina Powers.

>peak of 746

Those are rookie numbers, we gotta get those numbers up.

I have nothing against most Asians so long as we're excluding jeets.

But 750 out of 23 million bug people in the US is barely a statistic. I am guessing white people are far more often targeted just for being white, but is massively less recorded because ITS JUST DEY CULCHA. That, and its always whiteys fault even if whitey is dead.

But, hate crime as a charge is also retarded. They already committed a crime, and racial motivation as a separate charge is just unnecessary paperwork.

Yup. Was there when it happened. Basically videos of the actual events of Asian hate started to be posted on X which finally allowed content like that and circulated on parts of Reddit and the entire narrative that it was white MAGA Trumpers going after Asians (this was the narrative btw, don't let them ever try and twist that) fell apart. When came out it wasn't evil white Trumpers doing it leftists who only ever cared because it was part of their anti-white narrative dropped it like a bad habit.
Website STOP ASIAN HATE (1).png Note how this says "end white supremacy"? the implication is it's white people doing it when in reality:
When blacks hurting asians became obvious the progressive narrative became "Black people hurt asian people because white people" and then they stopped posting about it lol

Speaking of that I saved this comment from a black guy on a video about stop Asian hate (one that shockingly was more honest about who was doing it) who came so close to figuring it out but then because of his limited IQ and programming defaults to "it's mothfugging YT's fault ooga booga"

Really think about how fucking absurd this is. Black Americans terrorize Asians because they are short and easy targets and they are cowards. Same reason you read stories about them raping elderly ladies. They are predator animals. It has fuck all to do with "systemic racism" and evil whitey. I do believe they feel resentment and hatred towards Asian because of jealousy too so he has that right but again, nothing to do with whitey.

I don't know why they just love lumping arabs and jeets in with east asians just for being on the same continent despite being two completely different ethnic groups. Stop poowashing us please.
You're all the same lmao stop acting like ur so different

Really think about how fucking absurd this is
You look at blacks in the 40’s and 50’s and there was a community of them developing behaviors and cultures compatible with ‘white society’. They were literate, well spoken, well dressed, well behaved. They were acculturating because they wanted a better life and realized that to achieve a ‘white’ standard of living they needed to adhere to ‘white’ standards of conduct.

Then, in the sixties, the poison of soft Marxism, spreading from leftist academia to the institutions, started telling blacks it was ‘racist’ to deny them equal status when they did not meet equal behavioral benchmarks. The goal, as it ever is with cultural Marxism, was to drive an insoluble wedge between white and black America. And it worked.

So now we have this problem in which all ‘racism’ is whitey’s fault no matter who’s committing it, or why. The idiot in your screen grab places all the responsibility for his kinds’ violence either on white people, or worse, on its victims.

No. Those Asians got their business loans because they knew how to run businesses. The survivors of the internment camps got reparations (in nineteen eighty-eight) because they had suffered material loss, while black slaves and their descendants arguably hit the jackpot by not ending up in Brazil or Cuba. His saying Asians didn’t have to fight for recognition completely ignores the 442nd Infantry Regiment, an almost all-Japanese unit recognized as the most decorated unit in US military history. Where’s their ‘Red Tails’ or ‘The Six Triple-Eight’ movie?

And he can rant about becoming a ‘model minority’ being a losing game all he wants, but the alternative path the aggrieved black community has been pursuing since the 60’s is clearly no better.

Ignorance is one thing. Wilful ignorance like this is another thing entirely.

That would unironically be a kickass movie, especially considering you could have the attempt to break through to and rescue the Lost Battalion be the climax.
1776120413306.png
Before anyone is wondering, they had no idea what their objective was for several days during their assault on German lines. They day after they were informed they were fighting to rescue said battalion they launched an honest-to-God banzai attack on German lines to get them out. Its as made for Hollywood as you can get.

Best I can give you is "heroism in the face of racism".

(They legitimately did have a general in charge who was as racist as he was stupid, though. He was absolutely despised by the white officers of the 442nd for his complete disregard for the lives and safety of the men under their command.)
What the Wikipedia article fails to mention is whether he had other options, though. There were plenty of all-white units across all theaters of WW2 that suffered immense casualties or complete losses because they were the Johnnies-on-the-spot, including the 3rd Infantry Division, 1st Marine Division, and the 1st, 3rd and 4th Ranger Battalions.
Never forget that Wikipedia is ideologically captured and never misses an opportunity to shit on white people.

And while the 442nd was winning accolades, black soldiers mutinied and killed their white officers in Townsville, Australia. And in a perfect example of how Marxists subvert history, it was apparently because of a courageous stand against racism or because white soldiers had killed a black sergeant, which was the cassus belli, but turned out to be barracks rumors, here repeated as fact.

Considering the Lost Battalion was only lost because Dahlgren had given them poor orders against the advice of his senior officers...

While the 442nd and elements of it were certainly used as fire brigade units elsewhere its really only him specifically that was an ignorant dumbass.

That's the point of the OP.

The average Asian in the street is like "I GOT THE ROPE RIGHT HERE" while the blank-studies people at SF State are like "We need to unite all the colors against the white menace by abolishing the police and jail. Sing kumbaya or some shit instead."

This has been my experience with Asian friends. No one hates black people as much as Asians do.

I think it’s because Asians like cities and many of them born in Asia have experienced what it’s like to be able to ride public transit and walk around at night in a normal, civilized place that does not have Africans

they will all parrot that White people were beating asians because of Trump's remarks on Covid.
Yes, this is something I heard frequently. Leftists or just blacks on twitter constantly spouted “white people are responsible for the majority of these hate crimes towards Asians” which-I would really like to see those numbers and how they came to them.

Edit

“Virulent Hate Project (University of Michigan): This study analyzed over 1,000 incidents reported in the news in 2020. In cases where the race of the offender could be identified, 89.6% were white.”

“FBI Data: Federal hate crime statistics from 2021 show that among all known hate crime offenders (across all victim types), 52.3% were white, while 21.7% were Black.“

It's open faced propaganda. The media doesn't report the race when it's a nig doing the crime but always does when it's a white. The media has investigated itself and concluded that its opinions are aligned with its own opinions.
