Just to humor the idea, it's inconceivable we would try to extract it without having some serious control over the whole area. Isnt it quite a delicate process to move all of that stuff? And that's also something we can't block given that shit like the Volga are what feeds into it; so even if we block the gulf they still have a direct waterway to Russia. A blockade would have some effect but they would still be able to receive and send small shipments of goods, weapons, whatever. We'd need to be bombing the fuck out of any port, dock, anything they have on the coast.

we can bitch and moan about how unfair and underhanded the strategy is, but no one is denying that its pretty effective, in an existential war like this, Iran is more than wiling to use their most powerful, near unsurmountable advantage they have.

I find arguing over the "rightness" and "wrongness" of military actions that have happened to be pointless, as long as its effective and has done over what its supposed to achieve.

I personally find the plan to bomb all of Iran's essential infrastructure to be quite horrifying in the perspective of morality, as it would hurt its civilian population the hardest, and I certainly wouldn't want to be living in Iran in the aftermath of this operation, but it does make strategic sense to me that the collapse of society would inevitably lead to the collapse of the government as well.

More cynically, I think an approach of "We are going to navaly blockade Iran until they have a regime change, and btw we aren't going to take any other action to cause one," would be a very solid way of handling the situation cheaply. The world needs the Persian Gulf more than the US does.
