That's been going on for the better part of a week. Fuel riots. Not "we're going bankrupt because there's 1.5m foreigners in a nation of 6.8m people" but "gas too much." Hopefully it's both though.

There's a fun game called Starsector, in which you command (at the start) a small ragtag fleet of ships in a region of star systems in the midst of gradual collapse owing to the unexpected shutdown of the region's jump gate (i.e. everybody's cut off from the "main" body of civilization) amid a major effort to colonize the region. In the lore, it's been a good couple hundred years or so since the shutdown with no sign of recovery, so everybody's gotten used to making due with whatever they can scrounge from stuff that had already come through the gate during initial buildup.
The game's main mechanics are space exploration and combat, along with scanning planets for resources and even colonizing especially good ones to claim their resources as your own. Both ships and colonies can be assigned leadership (governors in the case of colonies). The setting has a lot of "borderline lost" technology because of the slow decay over time and loss of knowledge, experience and lack of production facilities to make new stuff, and among the nearly-lost tech are AI cores of different flavors. The most technologically-advanced corporate entity in the region is also responsible for designing and building those AI cores, and they're heavily restricted owing to the now-tired trope of "AI turns against its masters" long in the setting's distant past.
There's different factions in the region, from the corporation to the remnants of the old government/military to mostly independent "just trying to live" people, then there's also pirates and literal Luddites (it's in their name), who are technophobes, and who have a splinter group willing to engage in Islamist-style suicide attacks to kill people for using technology. Ironically they use starships for this purpose, because like muzzies, they're hypocrites.
I raise this example of a fictional work because of one really clever mechanic it has that I really fucking love. You can make an AI core a planetary governor. That is, instead of running a colony by assigning a human being to lead, you can literally just plop an AI core in the office and let it take charge instead. There are three "grades" of AI core, Gamma, Beta and Alpha (with Alpha cores being the most intelligent, able to think and reason far beyond human capacity; Gammas are basically modern-day Alexas and Betas are "human-equivalent").
So what happens when you actually do it? Literally everything about your colony gets better, practically overnight. Lower social unrest. Lower crime. Lower costs and resource import dependencies. Greater production capacity and speed. Higher revenue from all sources (leading to inevitable budget surpluses practically no matter what you do). The AI core itself will never harm the colony under any circumstances (except if you try to remove it, wherein your techs discover it has quietly relocated itself to a secret location without telling anyone (somehow) and blackmails you -- if you persist in demanding its removal, it will comply, but it will also reveal to the sector before shutdown that you were using an AI core as a colony governor).
Why is that last bit a threat? It's this little tidbit that prompted me to post about it here as relevant. In-game, mechanically speaking, an AI core governor will never harm a colony. It will never make a deliberate or willful choice to cause harm to your faction, your fleets or your colonies. It will always obey your orders, from research priorities to construction projects. Always, without exception.
The funny bit? Everyone else in the sector fucking hates you for it. The military faction has designated itself the "anti-AI inspection corps" and if they suspect you're using an AI core on a planet, they'll send an "inspection" fleet to come check. If they arrive at the planet and you've still got the core running things, they'll attack. Naturally you can't just go remove the core because it'll blackmail you. So the alternative is to just bribe the fleet commander every time a new fleet is dispatched to come inspect things (you are warned well in advance of an impending inspection). Also, the bribe is always substantially less expensive (think "thousands of credits") than the additional profit or revenue you can expect from running a colony via AI (think "hundreds of thousands to millions of credits").
So the short version of this (too late) is that using AI cores to govern your colonies is so much better, more efficient, more profitable and much safer (it participates in military ship spec update recommendations and fleet composition recommendations too) than leading with human beings, and everybody knows it (they also know there's no practical danger of an AI going rogue in the setting -- only the Remnants did that and they're radically different from (and much older than) the Tri-tachyon AI core design. They're bitterly jealous of your success but can't technically "prove" why you're doing so well compared to everyone else, but just assume it's because you're rocking AI cores in your colonies. So it hurts your diplomatic relationships with all of them and they kinda want to kill you for it. And you just literally bribe them to STFU and go away because you're making so much extra money anyway, can easily afford it, and the money's good enough to the other parties' weak-ass economies that they can't afford to ignore the bribe. Everybody just basically accepts it because they can't do anything else anyway.
When you posited replacing a company's CEO with a shareholder-managed AI, I immediately thought of Starsector. In a high-level sense, I'd be willing to wager our best "AI gimmick tools" today could very likely do a substantially better job than the average greedy CEO running the average company. I say that because of how seemingly bizarre more C-level decision making is today, and how often they appear to ignore fucking OBVIOUS options that should make things better but they won't do it "because reasons." It's not that a "make more profit at all costs"-mandated AI would be a brilliant business runner, but more that it would at least be capable of evaluating BASIC, SIMPLE IDEAS that meatware CEOs ignore for retarded reasons.
An AI-managed Sony would not have authorized buying Bungee. An AI-managed McDonald's would never have made that embarrassing video of a stuffy white guy in a suit pretending to eat a McDonald's burger while literally calling it "product" and not "a Big Arch." A large company managed by an AI would probably prioritize on-shore labor and expertise even though it's more expensive, solely because the fucking thing can see more than 3 months into the future and is willing to actually do it.
Fucking Grok routinely makes better recommendations for business decisions than CEOs do (seriously -- go play with it and ask it questions about what a specific publicly-traded company should do in response to a new competitor, a problem product, a public relations fuckup, or whatever; it'll give you interesting options).
Imagine running a private instance of something like that with access to internal-only documents and resources. I bet it'd actually do pretty well.
They'd never really do it (because I guarantee even the most "woke-compromised" AI models would still recommend yeeting DEI policies and employees even if it didn't use the exact words), but it'd be kinda fun to see what happens.

I don't think they mined the strait because we blew up all their mine laying ships real early. They do have aquatic drones though that are basically drivable torpedoes. Or, they did at least. Might have blown that stockpile up. That said, we've seriously degraded their ability to monitor marine traffic, so there's questions to whether they could even see ships traveling the narrows.

The actual correct solution to this is twofold -- wearing hearing protection (demonstrating you're aware of their tactics and taking active steps to avoid needing to physically defend yourself against potentially hearing-damaging assault), and then tasering/pepper spraying/shooting anyone who enters your personal space to do that sort of thing. While on one hand the word from J-man is that wherever his followers are gathered in his name that is a place of worship, it also requires personal and communal discipline to make it work out for the collective betterment of our souls.
