Agreed. It assumes the regime would capitulate with civil unrest but in reality all they will do is throw resources at the military and forgo the civil responsibilities, after all, they control the available water, food and hold all the weapons. In theory a denial of services to a civilian population should result in an overthrow, but historically what usually happens is in the humanitarian crisis that unfolds, the regimes hold onto power and the civilians merely suffer.

It would require a permanent presence to take control of the strait and would commit US forces for a very long time and while theoretically possible, reducing the strait to gorilla warfare will merely see the strait become a permanent choke point with reduced trade as the status quo and elevated energy prices for 1-2 years. It takes the destruction of only a few tankers to spill their loads and the strait is fucked for a very long time.

What are the chances the USA could take the strait if they really wanted to? Good. Chances they control it without conflict being the status quo: Nill. Chances of avoiding a few tankers being blown to hell and decimating the waterway: Slim.
