Iran has made it clear that it refuses even a "temporary" reopening of the Strait, which is one of Trump's hard lines. This seem to mostly be concocted by a bunch of Pakistanis with maybe some low-level US staffer ferreting messages back and forth.

Ill try to be less of an inflammatory jingoist for a moment here. At this point in time, the military has gone too far to settle for anything less than Iran giving up its ability to project power beyond its borders. This includes through missiles, proxies, and threats against the strait. The damage they have inflicted against neutral parties and against civilian infrastructure means anything short of complete capitulation cant be trusted by us or our allies in the region. I could always be wrong, but it really looks like the end game of this is going to be the total destruction of their infrastructure and the fomenting of a very unfortunate and ugly civil war while the US and friends periodically fly over to tear down assets that threaten anything outside Iran.

Those troops have amassed for a reason and I think Trump is contemplating doing something that carries incredible risk. Objectively, the naval power he has placed in the region would appear to serve two purposes: allow the land invasion of one or more islands and to also mitigate the projectile response from Iran. It is noteworthy neither of those two goals requires the destruction of Irans civil infrastructure (power plants, bridges).

A lot of people think Trump is looking for an off-ramp to the conflict, but I have my doubts he is seeking such. I also have my doubts Iran's regime is looking for an off-ramp either. I suspect it would involve triggering a series of ground based threats and turning off the lights. If a lot of pieces move at once, it sets the stage for us to have a little littoral mission in the strait, while the regime gets swamped in a bunch of little dumpster fires. Undoubtedly mossad has some kind of friends in the country, there are also plenty of other little groups like the kurds and Azerbaijan who might be willing to light some fires, so long as everyone is doing it. If it's anything like that, it will be super risky all around, but could create the ideal conditions to nab an island and layer some defenses in the strait.

NATO and individual countries not getting involved is their prerogative, but disallowing access to American bases and preventing even overflight is maddening. From what I can gather from Europeans online and statements from their politicians, they actually think American bases in Europe are there solely to protect Europe, as if that was a commandment from God himself. In fact, it’s treated like a sacred duty that Americans must put their necks on the line for their European betters.

They legitimately cannot wrap their heads around the fact that the US bases there with the understanding that the US provides a bulwark/security, with the expectation that the US can use said bases in US operations, whatever they may be.
