I believe Trump is going to be removed from office over the Iran thing. We've been in a total information blackout / propaganda full-court press since it started and they won't be able to keep that up much longer. The things we're going to find out in the next six months would be enough in a sane world.

Every other region gets a slap on the ass and a stick of gum if they are lucky. We had a hiring freeze three years ago despite being comically understaffed because Amtrak blew a shit ton of money on two bridges on the NE corridor. This was recently after Joe Biden's infrastructure funding Amtrak received to the tune of sixty gorrilian dollars

I recently rode the Texas Eagle for a business trip and it was utterly pitiful how poor of a quality the train was in, the only bonus is that because nobody was riding it (and my conductor was probably drunk because he reeked of alcohol), I was able to turn the empty seat next to me into a bed and no one gave a shit.

A privatized rail system would do a lot for American transport overall, but part of me does fear that means i'd lose out on the only rail line from where I live and would have to fly and get anally raped like a goy by (((TSA))) when I want to comfortably leave my region. Abolish the TSA while you're at it and I'd be okay with breaking up Amtrak, even if that's a rather selfish take.

Long distance rail simply cannot compete with planes anymore which is why Amtrak only does well in the NE corridor and a few areas in the midwest centered around Chicago. If they actually want to get good ridership in areas like the southeastern US then they should focus on making commuter rail systems akin to the tri-rail. Miami, Orlando, Atlanta, Houston, Nashville, Memphis, and Jacksonville have really well placed freight rail right of ways with room for dual tracking so it'd be incredibly cheap to do and would allow for decent speeds between 60-80 mph to be reached. Do a little bit of land acquisition and you could quad track some areas for the sake of future intercity services like Brightline.

It doesn't have to compete, it just needs to be reasonable. I like to go to New Orleans once a year. It is an eight hour drive from Central TX. Logistically, a train should be able to get me there in four.

Amtrak costs as much as a flight does but takes 33 hours. Flying is two hours. But I wouldn't mind a train because boarding/deboarding is quicker and easier.

But 33 god damned hours.

You can drive from Austin to Dallas in +/- 3 hours.

Amtrak takes 6 1/2.
