If you wanted to block Iranian oil exports you could simply seize their ships after they passed the Strait. The US navy hasn't done that because of the market disruptions that would cause. If the US takes Kharg Island the same would happen too. Unless oil somehow keeps flowing. You really aren't thinking the way Donald Trump is thinking. He has ZERO hang ups on the idea of territorial irredentism. The Greenland situation is proof enough of this. The entire shit show in the Persian Gulf is a direct result of the USA having to rely on third parties from the Europeans to the Arabs to maintain the American presence in the Gulf. If the USA takes the Persian Gulf Islands that Iran controls, then ALL of Americas basing problems are solved at a stroke.

Informative, but there was also no legal justification for bombing Iran. The US does not fuck with Iranian tankers because they are going to China and it would drive up global oil prices even higher. The idea that paperwork for shipments beats out strategic and tactical considerations in an active war is pretty amazing though.

Those islands are indefensible versus a nation with the ballistic capability of Iran. The southern coast of Iran is a mountain range overlooking these islands. They can only be resupplied by flying over foreign airspace or by sailing through the Strait of Hormuz.

You need to stop trying to interpret the world in mythical terms. You miss really obvious stuff.

Open source indication is that is not what is going down. The Marines are being mobilized for their largest expedition since the start of World War 2.

In addition to the USS Tripoli MEU, the USS Boxer MEU has also set sail.

This is essentially the equivalent of an entire division once you factor in the fleet train and naval escorts. The US hasn't sent the Marine Corps out like this in a looooong time. Something big is brewing. The fact that it is happening now strongly indicates this was not Trumps first course of action, but Iranian belligerence and allied weakness is forcing his hand.

I have a feeling that Trump may be abandoning the whole middle East. He will shrug off the closure of the Straight of Hormuz and instead he will invade Cuba, where he can produce a clear victory. The Straight will be open for ships doing business in Chinese yuan, leading to the downfall of the petrodollar, which in turn ends the US. Am I crazy?

He would probably be much more willing to help open the Strait sooner if NATO had just shown the slightest inclination to offer any sort of assistance.
Now that they've proven how worthless and cowardly they truly are, he's shifted his position to, "We're gonna focus on the islands and bankrupt the regime at our own pace. You can cry about it until it's over."

You really are underestimating how much us Americans are a bunch of cowboys at heart. What you are describing is simply a tactical scenario we can overcome with overwhelming firepower. Iran will come to terms or break long before we run out of ammunition, money and manpower.

That's the possible stakes at play here. The US has waged a brutal air campaign on Iran, who has responded by taking the Petrodollar hostage. Leaving now means leaving Iran in active, not threatened to, control of ~20% of the worlds oil shipments. That would do catastrophic damage to the stability of the dollar.

They also need to prevent Iran from conducting operations from the coastline. Occupying the nearby islands would be much easier and safer than trying to maintain a concentrated naval presence.

Which is why we aren't going to do it. Trump offered the international community the chance to take responsibility for the straights of Hormuz. They refused. So now, we are going to turn the Persian Gulf into an American lake.

Subtext, we can put Artillery like HIMARS and 155mm on it, along with Air Defense like CRAM and Patriots. The Islands are also sparsely populated. There is zero chance of a domestic insurgency from an American occupation.
