Steam has a whole genre of games that are shitty and cobbled together from premade assets that exist only to generate cards and Valve doesn't care, but if you talk shit about Gabe and you're banned immediatly. In a situation like this, misgendering somebody opens you up to being torn down by white knights. Using someone's preferred pronouns, even when they're very clearly doing it for attention/don't actually have gender dysphoria/are in the middle of a mental breakdown and latching onto a transgender identity to try and cope, is considered being the bigger person and playing it safe. You'll still probably get accusations of transphobia, but at least you can be like "hey, I used her preferred pronouns." It makes you appear to be "neutral."

Alex may not be completely suicidal, but he's certainly on a path of self-destruction and he'd have to be one stupid motherfucker to not realize, at least in part, that he's actively ruining his reputation and any chance of being employed after this. I think he wants this. If any of Alex's friends gave a shit about him they'd realize this is a cry for help, but Alex would probably find a way to drive them off.

Also, yelling at real transpeople is probably because they, you know, put effort into passing and actually look like their target gender. So there's jealousy in there too. Alex just hates the world and everyone in it, and wants to take down as many people as possible with him.
