Production also dropped after Venezuela began to be sanctioned because it became extraordinarily difficult to source parts to maintain their infrastructure, much less upgrade any of it. The country also seemed to work hard to drive away foreign (ie Western) laborers and industry experts after sanctions hit, and, afaict, did very little to cooperate with other sanctioned oil/gas producers to develop their assets until very recently.

Welcome to idealism meeting reality.
A lot of international laws and decorum was created at the turn of the century as a lot of aging boomers declared it the end of history.
But that's not the reality we live in, you have to make do with imperfect solution to complex problems. Should sovereignty be ultimate? Ideally, but this will neither be the first nor last time where a national leader gets taken out for unwise decision making.
Sure, some Russophiles might say what they're doing in Ukraine is no different from what the US did with Maduro, but I think most people know deep down these two events are not the same. And even if it was, always remember the first rule of politics
