You have seen plenty of resistance from groups of people that weren’t religious fanatics in the past.

Think of the north Vietnamese forces, or the Chinese during ww2. The point is that people can be very persistently resistant against any foreign power that is in their nation. Common nationalistic fervor can be motivation enough. Couple that with a militarized regime and you have the recipe for a long conflict.

Is the military likely to let the (less disciplined, more ideological) paramilitaries run wild? Or will the military leadership try to stabilize things and restrain them?

I assume all of the formal military's senior leadership is loyal to Maduro, but maybe some are more pragmatic than ideological?

The Vietnamese saw their conflict as part of their independence movement.

The Chinese were literally getting slaughtered and raped by the Japanese.

Trump already had a dedicated guerilla movement to deal with in Syria. He bombed ISIS to smithereens without putting 100,000 soldiers on the ground. Raqqa looked like 2,000 year old ruins by the time he was done with it

Both of your examples were receiving support from other nations, Venezuela can't get the level of support a prolonged insurgency requires. We're blockading their ports and Brazil and Colombia aren't stupid enough nor do they have the transportation infrastructure to supply a hypothetical Chavista insurgency.
 
I just heard the news, so fucking based. I know that anti-war people are pissed that Trump did a South American regime change boogaloo, but at least it was fast and ended in an actual victory, unlike the ME. I hope we keep Venezuela as an American territory like Puerto Rico at least, giving it back would be le gay. We could also keep it as a new state like Alaska, that would be pretty bitchin'.
