Christian theology thread for Christians - Deus homo factus est naturam erante, mundus renovatus est a Christo regnante

What makes American Evangelism so prone to producing all these Televangelist/Pharisee types? It's like they're grown in a lab or something.
America is the wealthiest country in the world, whose social structure is largely based on money, and it has a long history of religious tolerance. When you mash the social mobility of American moneymaking with the fact that you can just invent a religion, you get shit like Scientology and the Prosperity Gospel.

Have you heard of this? Its central tenet is that you can invest money through a central figurehead, like a Prosperity Gospel megachurch preacher, so that God will reward you with a divine dividend of some kind. Usually cash. They literally promise their followers that their contributions (through what they call tithing) will return to them many times over, as if they can control what God will and will not do, and as if God cares how much money we give these parasites. Give, give, give they say, if you didn't get your reward you haven't given enough! And so on and on and on to keep the scam going, and throw in the use shyster theatrics and shill tactics to pretend they work miracles. With tax-exempt status as a Christian denomination and an enormous amount of clandestine gray-zone sinning, these freaks accumulate the wealth of the desperate for themselves and use it solely to feed Mammon. I hate them with all my soul.

It would be funny if it wasnt so depressing how they take advantage of the low IQ and the Desperate. The really annoying thing about the Prosperity Gospel heresy is that its so loud and it puts everyone else in a bad light.

The Wisdom of Bl. Fulton Sheen

Day 362 - We are living in perilous times when the hearts and souls of men are sorely tried. Never before has the future been so utterly unpredictable; we are not so much in a period of transition with belief in progress to push us on, rather we seem to be entering the realm of the unknown, joylessly, disillusioned, and without hope. The whole world seems to be in a state of spiritual widowhood, possessed of the harrowing devastation of one who set out on life's course joyously in intimate comradeship with another, and then is bereft of that companion forever.

I think I am in hot water.
I've been mostly silent post-conversion around family, but I owed it to my father to tell him partly out of honesty and partly because I just wanted to, his reaction was suprisingly muted and can be boiled down to "oh, ok" and "but [moot points, weak theological arguments]". He sees the thing as somewhat of a joke but I think he realizes the full gravitas of the situation and might come to accept it. Unfortunately, due to my own recklessness and pride I've been loose with my tongue around some family and they've put two-and-two together and they've taken it markedly worse, and for the sake of honesty I got quite a kick out of it, partly due to their reaction and partly due to how weak their theological arguments were, some of them being 1:1 copies of what my father had said. Once the rush wore off, I found myself with two angry (albeit powerless, considering I'm not a kid) family members, but I can't rule out them taking "measures" against me, starting from verbal humiliation and intimidation to the admittedly unlikely possibility of murder. I've got the same feeling as in the aftermath of when I told my dad but nevertheless I am worried as this wasn't somethong I had planned for. As much as I want to say that I'll stand firm even unto death, I can never be sure that I'm not just re-enacting Peter in the court of the Pharisees. Pray for me in these uncertain times.

Those Prosperity Pimps are, and I’m pretty sure about this, going to the hottest parts of Hell because it’s not just a scam it’s scamming believers who are typically very desperate and in a bad place in their life, and using the gospel to do so.
Bro, if you believed anything in the Bible you would never even consider doing that. To the point I genuinely believe that some demons may be involved with a couple of those dudes.
People make a big thing about the unforgivable sin being blasphemy against the Holy Spirit and debating what that looks like, but I can’t think of a more clear example of that than the Prosperity Pimps saying your cancer will be cured if you send them thousands of dollars and using His name in that manner.

If the world hates you, keep in mind that it hated me first. If you belonged to the world, it would love you as its own. As it is, you do not belong to the world, but I have chosen you out of the world. That is why the world hates you. Remember what I told you: ‘A servant is not greater than his master.’ If they persecuted me, they will persecute you also. If they obeyed my teaching, they will obey yours also. They will treat you this way because of my name, for they do not know the one who sent me. If I had not come and spoken to them, they would not be guilty of sin; but now they have no excuse for their sin. Whoever hates me hates my Father as well. If I had not done among them the works no one else did, they would not be guilty of sin. As it is, they have seen, and yet they have hated both me and my Father. But this is to fulfill what is written in their Law: ‘They hated me without reason.’

Stay strong. No matter how hard it gets, everything leads back to God, and God rewards those persecuted in His name. May the best happen and you are sheltered by His hand: if the worst should happen, I hope we will meet in the Kingdom of Heaven.

To the point I genuinely believe that some demons may be involved with a couple of those dudes.

I agree.

the KJV is bold and impactful in it's wording.

American Boomer theology is interesting.
Prosperity Pimps
Read Matthew 7 and 1 Timothy 6, they are good chapters to cite in order to speak out against blab it and grab it stupidity. When hundreds to thousands of people attend these auditorium churches, they don't realize the new digital sound system and all the fancy sign out front they don't need to upgrade and all the upgrades the building doesn't need are being paid for by them going to that giving kiosk - the sheep in the congregation are being robbed blind by the wolf in the pulpit and being run into deep, inescapable credit card debt and don't even realize it.

It's like churches in the US are getting worse, and I'm glad that there are a small remnant of non-pozzed and non-worldly churches out there; the New Testament itself teaches that there is always a remnant God raises up in the world somewhere. I had a far left family member once try to ask in a concerned way if the church I attend has "any minorities" in the congregation and if they allow women pastors - I feel that is self-explanatory about how evil tries to worm its way into churches (outside of rich corrupt pastors fleecing people) to peddle Cultural Marxist dogmas. People like the person I'm thinking of think people like devout Christians need to "get with the times"; it's a sick way to view the world - like why do you care what goes on in churches if you live a secular life. I don't live in the UK, but a secularist moron like Keir Starmer unintentionally causing a schism in the Anglican Church by appointing a female Archbishop of Canterbury is a perfect illustration of that kind of mentality.

I have a really stupid and vaguely off-topic question regarding communion.
I’ve been to multiple churches where they give the option to parents for the kids to have grape juice instead of wine, and churches where if you request they’ll give grape juice instead of wine to you for communion (I know some recovered alcoholics who take that opinion), some give wafers others give bread, that kind of thing.
My stupid question is, doctrinally speaking, how far removed from bread and wine can the communion be before it doesn’t “count”? If grape juice is ok is apple juice? If idk you’re in a trench or something would a saltine cracker work? If you’re stranded on a desert island with a priest would coconut milk and nuts be ok? Or is it as simple as doing the best with what you have?
I was washing dishes and this occurred to me, genuinely what is the line with the bread and wine?

I wouldn't pray to statues
we don't pray TO the statue, we pray INFRONT of the statue as a form of visual aid. Similar to when you have a picture of your grandma when you pray to God for her soul
an ancient Hebrew woman who doesn't know you exist
Jesus would not have thought her in such manner. You are going against Scripture when you say such blasphemy against The Mother Of God

the wine has to be from grapes and the bread has to be unleavened and from wheat. Now the alcohol in the wine can be 0 (mustum) and the bread can be very low on gluten (not 0, but low enough that some countries can give it the label of "gluten free"), but it has to be from those elements, at least in the west and the latin rites. But what you also need is a competent minister (a priest consecrated by a bishop with apostolic succession), and the right intention (to consecrate the elements into the Body and Blood of Christ). If you don't have this three aspects, then you have an invalid Eucharist

Really depends on the denomination. Catholics will probably be more demanding on the components of the ritual then Baptists for example. It will depend heavily on whether you believe the wine and bread literally become the blood and flesh of christ as opposed to being a representation of it.

For most Protestants though there is not a belief that the stuff is LITERALLY flesh and blood. The ritual is done in "rememberance" of Christ, in following with his request to the apostles at the last supper. For Catholics and Some Protestants, when they read the passage where christ takes the bread and wine and says "this is my body" and "this is my blood" they take a strictly literal reading. Which in that vein means you need to use some form of bread and some form of wine. Using something like a Chips Ahoy cookie would not go over well. Not necessarily because it cant be done, but because the body of christ would now be a chips ahoy cookie. An uncomfortable thing to contemplate to say the least.

For other Protestant denominations who dont believe in transubstantiation the ritual does not change the chips ahoy cookie into Christ's flesh. Christ's spirit instead embodies the "host", and since God can be anywhere in all things and make it holy, the cookie is fine. There is the question of whether ot not you SHOULD do it if better options are available. But the purpose of communion is for spiritual togetherness between the Congregants and God and done in remembrance of the Christ's sacrifice. So what is used specifically could be anything really if you drill down to the nitty gritty. The overarching question is less can you, but should you. Are there better options? Why deviate from the traditional presentation. Is there a good reason for doing so beyond thinking it would be cool to use cookies and coca cola for communion?

To me it’s more a dumb “featherless biped” argument than anything anyone would seriously do. I think it should be as close to bread and wine as possible, and both of those aren’t hard to find.
