If you use Wolfram Alpha to basically do your work to pass the class then you don't necessarily understand the math. It's a good aid though and I think AI is too with a lot of caveats. Wolfram Alpha won't lie to you halfway through a problem and keep going as if nothing happened, for example. LLMs will.
The Jeets at my client's offices all went bugfuck nuts when the various enterprise licenses started including LLM access. Not just the coders (every. single. jeet. devops. was screaming at the top of their lungs about wanting LLM access, fucking IMMEDIATELY) but also marketing, HR, etc.
Colleges, depending on the degree, should treat the degree program more like an apprenticeship; AI can't replace the human experience. We need to change the curriculum in public schools too. Middle school to high school, its time to start teaching our kids how to be functional adults with some core classes. Bring back home economics as a mandatory class that you take all 8 years. Sure, learn to cook, sew, maybe garden, but also how to manage and save money properly, file your own taxes, learn the things necessary to navigate adult hood. I don't need to know the quadratic formula off the top of my head it has never once come up outside of high school.

Yeah, it used to be "subverting expectations" but now that that's become the norm and the only people allowed to get TV and movies produced don't believe in Good or heroism the closest we get is unintentional truths. Lately I've noticed more media where there of course are queer characters because yay queer but then there's a line or scene about how they were molested when they were young that made me go hmm.

It makes me think about how everyone talks about how AI is gonna decimate the field of professional art, but a second order effect of this is going to be that way fewer people learn how to make art (no incentive spending the thousands of hours to get good, no jobs anyway once you do, no professional development). I don't really know what the implications of that will be. Seems weird.
Im remind of this becuase recently I decided to play Nehrim an oblivion mod that has a lot of praise to it, and it looked interesting. Better yet, its going to make people with actual talent, and/or work ethic more sought after. Take a look at hand-made furniture for example, far more expensive than the mass produced stuff you find at stores. A painting done by an actual artist, with actual dedication is worth more than any AI abomination created from other artist's work. The poor will live with AI products, the rich won't.
It does matter, because if you know how its supposed to be done, you can catch errors before they become massive problems. A tool can make the job easier, but it can't replace knowing the trade. Unless your comfortable taking the risk that something might fail, and I think we know massive corporations are perfectly fine with the risk.
