Eh, maybe, but IMO optics had little if anything to do with it. He had a few good reasons to settle with her.

First, as @AnOminous pointed out earlier, the court system doesn’t reward you for refusing to settle if you later win but get less than you would have in a settlement you rejected.

Second, destroying Kaceytron was not the goal of this. Destroying the snark community is his goal, as retribution and deterrence. Her humiliation video and settlement work as both. Note that Kaceytron has agreed to assist his litigation against others. She is legally obliged to do this as part of the settlement. It’s like flipping a street dealer to get Avon Barksdale - the street dealer is a pawn and potentially collateral in the bigger battle.

Third, this not only gives him a bit of extra firepower, but also changes the calculus for his opponents as they now have to work out what damage she can do and if this changes their position. What were her communications (if any) with the subreddit’s mods? Or with the other defendants? Even if her information is garbage, do they know this? How sure can they be?
