it seems that current military technology is again at a point where defense is much stronger than offense
in ww1 it was a similar situation. at that point in time, offense consisted of large scale infantry assaults, but defense consisted of entrenched machine guns which completely devastated infantry. offense had no good answer to machine gun nests (tanks were not well developed yet and were not available in sufficient numbers) so all they could really do was digging in and lobbing artillery shells at each others positions.
nowadays offense consists of pushing forward with armored vehicles, preferably towards positions that are neglected and only lightly defended, but drones make spotting these attempts very easy, and once spotted they are easy targets for drones and aircraft which can react and intercept vehicles much faster than the vehicles themselves can move.
