Creepy Unsolved Mysteries - From unsolved murders to unidentified people to unexplained supernatural events, what are some of the creepiest unsolved mysteries you've ever heard of?

Off of highway 20 in northern California, there's a place called Washington. Back in the 80s my ex and I took a drive up there just to check the place out.
It was like something out of Deliverance, people were coming out of their homes (shacks, really) to watch us drive by.
We were hoping there was some place to get lunch, but the place just creeped us out too much.
Looking back, it was most likely a bunch of weed farmers who were wondering who we were, but for my ex to get the willies was rare. Never wanted to re-visit the place.

Is there some kind of noise that only they hear that makes them run to their deaths? I can't think of any other reason.

They think there might be mink nests down below the one side most dogs jump from. Dogs go absolutely insane over mink scent.

I like the quietly satisfied look Benji has after the wolf goes flying. One of my dogs gets that exact same look when she manages to steal a treat from one of the other dogs.

I used to call Highway 99 the Highway of Despair because everything along that corridor was a shithole with no future. I used to be out in that area a lot more often for work. The stretch of Lancaster/Palmdale to Bakersfield to Fresno to Modesto is bleak. Everything east of there is the Wild West. I’m sure there’s a lot of creepy unsolved mysteries that goes on there. I have more stories but due to opsec reasons I won’t share. I’d avoid that area if you can help it.

Back when I was out in that area often for work I checked out the various curiosities of that part of California. I used to work further along the border south of Interstate 8. You’d stop at these towns and you did what you had to do and get the hell out of there. Otherwise various beaners would start to emerge. If you stayed too long there’d be various “Samaritans” who would pull up and ask you if you need directions which was code for “get the fuck out of here now.” I got lucky.

Oof. I know what you are talking about. CA 99 feels cursed, its got this bad vibe to it I cannot explain in words. I doubt I've taken it more than 6 times, Over a decade ago I made a wrong turn off 99 got lost ended up on some road that was paved looked like 40 years ago, IDK where I was maybe 50 miles south of Bakersfield or so. Its daytime and I have another 4 hours of daylight and a GPS so 2 miles in I just do a 3 point turn and get back to the 99 or wherever I was supposed to be. I kept thinking once again "something is wrong here. You wouldn't even have to even bury a body, you'd just drag it 30 yards off the road and find a ditch and that's it".

I'm always creeped out by any place I can drive for a long time and not see sign of another living soul. There are tons of parts in places like Detroit. Even in Los Angeles at night there is at least two areas you can drive for 10 mins never see any sign of living life. Once again, I hate the way my brain is wired so cynical; you could toss a dead body out of your car and throw a blanket over them like they were homeless. People would pass by for 3-4 weeks before anyone would notice they were dead.

Politisperg: This is why I am so very Pro 2A, Some random highway at night, I think everyone deserves a fighting chance,

Maybe that's more social commentary than unsolved mysteries. I keep thinking about Richard Kaklinski. He alleged boasting killing over 100 people or so, mostly for the Mob or financial gain. Now I find that simply impossible maybe 30 or 40 is plausible. IDK different time different forensics. Point being the guy was massive even before he got fat in prison. Something like 6'5" 280lbs. No issue physically killing the average 5'9" man with his bare hands. He got the nickname "The Iceman" by leaving bodies in a freezer for a few weeks and fucking up the primitive forensics of time of death based on body temperature. Eventually they found one of his victims with ice crystals internally and at that time of the year in New England it simply didn't get cold enough to do that. Fascinating guy considering he was serving life and had literally nothing to lose in being interviewed about his MO and his victims on camera for hours. The Video is out there if anyone is interested in serial killers it's a must watch. It was so popular they did a second recorded interview IIRC.

Yes, once you are south of Modesto, 99 is sort of creepy. There are some oddball places in between 99 and Yosemite as well, lots of weed farmers and meth too.

Stories where people seem to vanish without a trace are a little scary to me. How do you lose a person? It’s not like they’re a set of car keys.

Am I being unreasonably scared of this, or are there explanations for how people just seem to disappear into thin air? Are there really thorough serial killers and human traffickers out there in rates that can be estimated?

Or is it more likely people just seem to disconnect and “fall off the radar” with no foul play?

It's very difficult to find a body in a forest area or even a field. You can come within feet of one and not see it.

I still remember that story he told about how he told a Christian to pray to god to save him, and of course he murdered the man after.
Why didn’t his god save him?

A good few years back part of my walk home from work was cordoned off by the police. Turns out me and a bunch of other people had been walking past a corpse that had been dumped for a good few days and didn’t notice.

It was a in a pretty rough part of the city so I’m glad I don’t work there anymore.

I feel like the most important part was that it really showed how much of a psychopath he was.

That's an obvious one though. It's more interesting to actually listen to them talk so they'll reveal even deeper into just how fucked up they are.

I don't think we need to take this into typical Atheist debate territory lol.

Has anyone here followed the Tyler Goodrich story from over a year ago? The man ran off apparently after some kind of serious fight, I think he and his husband were nearing divorce territory, but don't quote me on that.

Anyway, people searched for him for a long time, and they finally found his body out in the woods. He'd hanged himself.

The "rats story" is far worse IMHO, IDK if it's true. Kuklinski always struck me as more of a business man who's childhood trauma made him into a sociopath than a traditional serial killer. He didn't kill for satisfaction as much as personal gain. I don't think he actually killed anywhere the number he claimed it just doesn't seem possible. I believe he most likely killed far more than he was convicted of.

If I recall correctly the Zodiac also made claims that he killed people that were proven impossible for him to have killed for some reason or another.

Are we talking about the HBO interview where a psychiatrist was interviewing him? I haven't seen it in a long time, but he was answering questions to determine if he was a psychopath. I do agree, he seemed to kill for personal gain and not for the joy of it, like other serial killers.

So I do wonder what would have come of him, if he didn't become some kind of hit man.

There were a few killers that had an extremely high kill count, yes? Ones like Henry Lee Lucas, I think, or Chikatilo.

I always thought he vastly inflated his number of kills and the stories as he knew he was never going to get out of prison and wanted a reputation for being such a nutcase no one would attack him for clout because it wasn’t worth the fallout if he went for revenge.

Since I briefly mentioned Chikatilo, I always wondered if that story about peasants stealing and eating his younger brother actually happened, or if that was a lie.
Chikatilo was born in 1936. The Holodomor/big Stalinist famines are generally regarded as ending in 1933. He may have heard of things that happened but his specific story is probably bullshit.

Agreed, Kuklinski does come off like a blow hard fudging his numbers a bit.
Some people have floated the theory that he took credit for kills that weren’t his. It’s plausible considering how many murders his contemporary mob-aligned thrill killer, Richard Biegenwald, was supposed to have done without speaking of. Also active during the 70s and early 80s in the NY/NJ area, Biegenwald specifically offered to confess to something like 60 additional murders in exchange for the prosecution not pursuing the death penalty. (They had him on six.) Prosecutors told him to fuck himself and the judge sentenced him to death… only for the state to abolish the death penalty less than a decade later. Gotta do that shit quick, assholes!

Multiple parties approached Biegenwald for information on various missing persons during the final years of his life, but that guy was the anti-Kuklinski. He didn’t say one word to anyone, at all; just silently chain smoked cigarettes for decades until he eventually died of kidney failure in 2008.

Kuklinski was completely full of shit. In Philip Carlo's book he claimed to be one of the hitmen involved in the Paul Castellano hit, and also the killer of Roy DeMeo. Both claims have been completely ridiculed by actual mob guys who would know.

He was a pathological liar.

Speaking of taking credit for killings, did they ever figure out if Ottis Toole killed Adam Walsh like he claimed to?

Not everyone accepts this evidence, but there was a stain found in his car that very much resembles a child's face. It's often dismissed as pareidolia, or even an outright fabrication (the car was lost so only photos remain to analyze), but it's definitely creepy.
