It's stupid to expect it to go well when you don't even speak the language of wherever you're going at a bare minimum, but it's also not difficult to understand why it's common, if futile. When everyone's staring at some screen or another for most of their day most of their connections are going to be superficial. Even when you meet up with family or friends, or are with a girl, there's a disconnect between everyone's personas as mediated through distance and technology as opposed to what it's actually like to be around them face to face and it's not even that there's a reality that's different from whatever comes through in texts or calls but that so much time and energy are spent on those kinds of indirect interactions that there's a built-in hollowness to everyone's in person presence because on some level they all forgot how to be anything other than insects poking at a screen.A lot of people nowadays will move away from everything they've ever known or loved at the drop of a hat. I'm not saying you need to live with mommy and daddy still but roots seem to be very important. I moved out of my hometown but I'm still decently close by. And I don't think I'd ever leave my state either. It just feels like home I guess. It's become very normal to put thousands of miles between you and your friends and family and I just don't get it.
So then you go off thinking things will be different elsewhere but they're exactly the same because everyone's doing this shit all over the world nowadays.
