As far as we know, Chantal was never abandoned or abused physically, emotionally, sexually. She went to her grandmother's while her mother was working, and her mother was a young mom. That's the case for many people, even people born when she was.
Sure, she should've had both parents but i don't think that's the smoking gun on why she's so messed up. She's had her basic needs met for the most part.
I think shes just fundamentally a broken person and it happened by chance, not by the actions (or inactions) of others.
Some people are born with everything and then some, and still are messed up. Some people are born into absolute shit situations, and end up a lot more well adjusted than Chantal will ever be. Even if she went to therapy. Guess it's the luck of the draw.
If she does, that really speaks to Chantal's addiction to/ritual regarding eating. Thrush makes everything taste like chalky poop. Even drinking tap water and plain saltines are fucking disgusting.
Imagine the smell of the fupa yeast + thrush throat

Whatever issues she may have had in her youth, being internet famous obviously made everything far worse and since she doesn't need to hold down any form of employment or really do anything besides do girl talk with her moron fans she has never been forced to change her shit up.
She can't even deal with eating a banana without putting on the disappointed face that only a 2 year old toddler puts up when mummy forces the aeroplane spoon of veggies into their mouth.
And she's definitely not the only lolcow or internet personality whereby the internet has done the same fucking thing - Chantal and many lolcows not only get vast amounts of attention through their internet autism but also get magical money that doesn't rely on them having to catch public transport, wake up at a sociable hour, work a few hours at the very least in a part time job or to do much of anything they don't want to do.
There would only be one real solution to improving her shit and that would be for the fabled internet lumberjack to cut down her internet access permanently. Salad at least seemed to try at this, maybe out of 2nd hand embarrassment or maybe because he could spot as fast as anyone else that the internet (or rather the way she uses it) was the source of most of her problems.

No grown man should be fucking a vulnerable, mentally ill teenage girl. He was a sexual predator that should have gone to jail. If only it was that simple. If it was, than everybody who had no father would be a pedophile fucker, or BPD nightmare, and that simply isn’t true. And if it was, then we’d know this was the case, “oh shit, this girl doesn’t have a dad, she’s doomed” and we could do something about it.
Tens of thousands of people grow up without a steady father, either because mom didn’t tell the baby daddy, or the dad died, and grandma took over, or whatever. And those kids grow up to be perfectly normal humans.
Chantal was born with a predisposition to mental illness. Than maybe didn’t have the extra care she needed to be normal if that was ever possible. Or maybe she’d never have been normal even if her father had been there from day 1.
All adults who’ve been around have seen people with good childhoods, two parents, enough money and who have become selfish narcs or even murderers. And we’ve seen poor people in foster homes with horrible childhoods become contributing members of society. And, sadly we’ve seen normal kids living in terrible conditions repeat the pattern of abuse and neglect.
It’s a combination of nature vs nurture with nature being the most important part. It’s naive and simplistic to believe it’s as simple as no daddy=a Chantal. Life is far more complicated than that and the way a human brain wired itself is individualistic and less about external factors and more about the way synapses connect.
I don’t think Chantal would ever have been a normal, functioning member of society, even born into a traditional middle class home. If she’d been born before social media she’d have had a series of minimum wage jobs and been on welfare. She’d never have functioned at a higher level, just like her friend James, and a million other denizens of section 8 apartments across North America.

I'm going to go out on a limb and say that even if Cutie had been born to a "normal" stable married couple rather than dragged up by whatever family members her teenage mother could tag in to help she would still be a detestable selfish fat wreck because it's just hard coded into her. Being a disgusting swamp beast is just the way she is.

Fatso is not a victim of any kind of abuse, she was raised by a teenage mother who had to work just to make ends meet, she was given everything her mother could provide under the circumstances. She was passed around, usually to her grandmother for babysitting and it sounds like she was a selfish, greedy child from being a toddler, people threw food and snacks at her to keep her occupied and shut her up most of the time. She was called “ cutie “ and learned manipulation from an early age, she was spoiled as far as finances would allow and nobody stood up to her demands and her “ rat faced attempt at being cute “ she has admitted to never taking NO for an answer lying and cheating to get exactly what she wanted.
Now she is an adult “ish” she will still resort to lying and cheating to get her own way and when things do not go as she wants, she will do anything, manipulate anyone, in order for her to be happy, she feigns illness like a pro for sympathy. She is a selfish, self absorbed, woman who demands attention and to be handed anything she “ craves “ just because she thinks she is entitled to it. This time around she is feeling some karma, people are no longer bending to her will and she brought it all on herself. She will claim mental illness when it’s yet another tantrum because she can’t get her way.
She is no victim, but everyone else in her orbit is.
Now she is an adult “ish” she will still resort to lying and cheating to get her own way and when things do not go as she wants, she will do anything, manipulate anyone, in order for her to be happy, she feigns illness like a pro for sympathy. I would expand on these ideas by saying if she had been generated under different circumstances, the only change would be how the behaviours were cloaked.
We could make the nature/nurture argument here but like @Barbarella says, Chins is simply a wrong'un. If she had been born in a poster-family for the post WW2 era in North America, with all of those advantages given to her, she would have had even more resources at her disposal to squander. She may have done drugs instead of eat. She may have rebelled against her two caring parents by doing any number of things, any of which would be more interesting than her current arc. But at the end, she would still be her.
Once I had a friend that said the true curse for a person we had reason to revile was to wake up every day and be them. For Chins, there is no greater pain she will ever know than realizing being Chantal Olive Marie Sarault is the karma she truly deserves.

I am not disagreeing with your feelings in any way, but unless I am misremembering Chantal's age at the time, what the guy did wasn't illegal. Until around 2008 the age of consent in Canada was 14. And when Chins was in high school, they still had grade 13, so most highschools had kids ranging in age from 13-20. I remember having friends just leaving middle school dating 20 year olds.
Again, to be really clear, I think that is gross as fuck, and I am not defending that guy, but it wasn't uncommon, sadly.

I guess I’m a sucker, but I have empathy for the child she once was. I personally believe she was neglected, but I’m also not sending her super chats or joining her channel. I believe in both nature and nurture, and I feel bad for those who were dealt a bad genetic hand, which I also think she was. Some kids just inherit the worst traits their parents have rolling around in their genes.
But I also think free will is an illusion or impaired by the choices we are capable of making being reduced to only shitty ones. Still glad my taxes don’t go to her healthcare though.

First of all, I never got an impression that while she was constantly screaming at and dissing on Salad in Syria prior to her leaving, her true motive was to make him fight for her. It just wasn’t. She was beyond excited to start a new life with no men. She’s changed her moind now, but there’s no going back.
Second, leaving someone just to force them to want you back rarely works and is the highest form of manipulation. It’s also the behavior of a 14-year-old, I doubt most 40+ year olds still play that game.
Also, she stated she spoke with salad YESTERDAY and he stated he is never going to date or marry. He is, after all, still an idiot for allowing daily communication at this point.
