The industrial base, and the connected industries left, all the people with a modicum of income went to the suburbs (and this only increased when the city tried to institute busing and "make education equal" (aka bring in inner city blacks from shit neighborhoods to the ones where people actually care about education) and then the riots didn't help either), And the city was so indebted because of the pension system for city workers that they couldn't afford anything. So the city became bankrupt (or very close to), in the 1970s the city was almost as bad as Detroit. Mandani's ideas economically will not work. He's already driving out people who came in under Bloomberg and Giuliani, but all that venture Capital money will equally move to Austin or some other Southern City. Socialism only works when you have an industrial base which can support it. Many rich people and many people I know who live in New York are leaving, they're changing their residencies to somewhere else and they're not going to pay their taxes in New York if they don't have to. This means all those social programs he wants to have will not be funded by anybody. The city will become broke and this time the Republicans will not save it.
