Perhaps it’s misplaced arrogance or some other wrongly assumed notion, but I just feel that I and many people would have the self awareness to realize how miserable and futile such a life is.

You know, on one level I can almost sympathise with pat. I was buying pants with my wife last weekend and she insisted I needed a size 38. I knew I was a size 36, even including the extra inch I need for my concealed carry.

Of course, when I went to try on the 36.....
They were too small. I've been a 34 since I was in my 30's, but now that I'm in my late 40s.....

The difference is, unlike Pat I admitted I'd gained weight, weighed my self and realised I'd gone from 225 to 255. I've since switched to a high protein low carb diet and I'm already down to 250.

Theres no shame in putting on a little weight as you age. There is shame in refusing to admit it in the face if evidence.

There is no dearth of quiet corner dives in his neighborhood. The type of bar that's not on the high street, has been owned by three generations of the same family, and just blends in with normal people's houses. Never full up and boisterous unless it's a Saturday or a game night. There is a reason he opts for someplace like Hoolies or the Garage. He wants to be a local celebrity.

Sidebar- remember the place where Patrick did his "Seinfat" stand up routine and made fun of trannies or whatever? That happened at a place called 42 Lounge (a Hitchhikers Guide reference, no doubt). I bet he was pretty cut up when that place closed down. Their bit was supposed to be A Bar For Geeks and Gamers, but they never really committed to it. Folks went there expecting a barcade and what they got was a couple Playstations and a menu of overpriced drinks with stupid names. About the same amount of effort Pat puts into novel-writing, honestly.
