So now they have no one to turn to find solace for their insecurity, and they notice young transitioners being applauded, heralded as brave and heroic. Everyone wants to be brave and heroic, especially lonely atomized people in fear. So they find their solace in the arms of an online collective that congratulates their decision to mutilate themselves. For some young people, like one I know in real life who is a cutter, transitioning also amounts to a form of state-sanctioned cutting, one they're congratulated for by their new peers. Not real peers, but online peers. People they will likely never meet. It's a entirely cognitive experience that lacks analog reality for them.
