Correct me if I'm misremembering, been a wild week, but it was absolutely luck that they caught him. The FBI was releasing photos and trying to get a palm print off the rifle but outside of that they basically had nothing. The reason he was caught was because he confessed that he did it to his parents and his dad called the FBI and held him until they could pick him up. His dad also surrendered his sons electronics which is how they found all the other potential collaborators on discord and Reddit.
