California is a lot redder and New England is a lot bluer than what most people think, just look at the 2024 Presidential map. California content in particular is really reductive in TFR, and it's definitely made by someone who's never lived there and for whom California is just "haha funni gangs and commies." Like think about it, despite being one of the most populated and wealthy states in the Union, California has nothing except a generic democrat faction, a generic republican faction, the commies, and then just dozens of gangs.

There are a lot of extremely interesting factions, many of which are right wing, that can be added to California. Just off the top of my head, Bethel Church (Pentecostal extremism to contrast the Baptist extremism in the South) and the Jefferson 51st State movement (powerful militia even in real life) should all be existing factions.

Yeah, California is one of many regions that could use an overhaul. While I've given the BTWH 'team' plenty of shit, I did think they had a pretty good spread of Californian factions for their 2ACW back in the day.



There are already some existing Californian factions that can be repurposed to cut down on the work in a broader Cali overhaul, I think.



At minimum I would remove most of the gang factions in favor of consolidating APLA control over the Bay Area (Oakland, San Jose/Silicon Valley, Santa Rosa) - could just say most of these gangs would throw in with the APLA, a lot of the OG Bolsheviks like Stalin were gangsters & bank robbers IRL after all. Newsom I'd move down to LA, have his gov't be shored up by the power of the LAPD; makes little sense that he'd move his capital from Sacramento, which is taken over by the Trump-aligned 'California State Militia' faction, to Bakersfield which is much more Republican-leaning. Alternatively, leave him with a doomed rump in & around Sacramento that's completely ringed by enemies, and give the LAPD their city as a warlord state under imminent threat by the APLA instead (the Crips could still be represented as a negative national spirit, either on their own or as part of a broader 'Anarchy in LA' spirit) similar to the NYPD on the East Coast.

Speaking of eastern California, I'd turn that 'San Jose Defense Committee' tag (which usually just instantly dies at the APLA's hands) into one for eastern Californian conservatives & military men (based out of places like Fort Irwin) instead, and convert the California State Militia tag into Jefferson secessionists. One or both can still be aligned to Trump's Denver Government. It's pretty strange that Jefferson isn't a thing at all in the mod actually, even though it's one of the better-known modern state-secessionist movements IRL.

Maybe one or two of the gangs could stick around but yeah, I'd like to see them replaced with more varied warlord tags as you suggest too. Now all this said, I will also say that I do agree with the TFR devs' focus on creating as much new content as they can atm instead of trapping themselves in an endless loop to rework the old on grounds of 'realism' or otherwise as the TNO & KR teams did.

You can actually still find their subreddits here and here, the team had to create the second one because Couch (as the owner & creator) shut down the original one to spite them after they launched a Discord coup against him for posting messages in support of a convicted far-left domestic terrorist (Ray Luc Levasseur) and bringing on more heat than they could deal with in the autumn of 2020. Of course, the newest posts on the new subreddit date back to two years ago, so yeah it's deader than the dodo.

The New England states & New York are the furthest-left and most Democratic-heavy states in the entire Union along with California & Hawaii with even their Republicans being soft libcucks that have an (R) next to their name like Susan Collins, their furthest right options should be those gay libertarians in New Hampshire and a rogue NYPD that's taken the law firmly into its own hands (who would also have made a good sharp contrast between themselves if they were to ever fight one another, 'hip' young libertarian right vs. a more traditional law & order right).

The most interesting thing you could do for RW factions in the north-east is to do what you said and start with milquetoast republicans as the only option. But since it is a leftist stomping ground and I think there's 3 or so different leftist tags in the region the milquetoast options start to become more radical as time goes on. They see what leftists are doing and at the beginning they try to do their unity rhetoric and how they should move past since they are all Americans blah blah blah. Once it becomes clear the leftists aren't gonna ever concede they start moving more and more right until you have an actual contender there that will join forces with the PF

That being in a free for all with Ivy League black blocks, West Point's cadets and a CIA/FBI puppet regime (maybe with a Bush figurehead) would be more interesting than PF, which is has no real business being in New England.

PF is in New England because there really isn’t anywhere else left. The west coast is APLA turf, Trump dominates the midwest, Biden’s in the east coast, Atomwaffen’s got the deep south and the NSM has Michigan. The only place I can think of is Texas but then they’d be sandwiched between the APLA and Trump.

Also PF in New England is optimal for gameplay purposes. With the NSM and Atomwaffen they can strike as a untied front since they’re all close to each other. APLA vs National Front showdowns are always kino.

Yeah, that's the problem. Understand why they did it for gameplay purposes, but I think it's obvious a lot of people think redrawing the factions to better account for reality would be cool too.

Honestly I don't even think the NSM *needs* to be a distinct faction - let the Patriot Front take over their position, add them as a coup option of something given how totally irrelevant and uninteresting they are.

This is mainly because the NSM is the least fleshed out tag in the mod. They will get a total overhaul (which devs have gone on record to say is most likely coming after 1.1).

I've always considered attempting to develop one set in the modern era after looking at the SVO's actual frontlines. Easily could get 2-3 years of content for the various factions if Syria and Ukraine is any indicator of how modern warfare works out.

Maybe? I was personally just thinking a single county or metro area, not the entirety of the United States. Although, I forget the name of it, there was one SVO mod that was just Ukraine and Russia with parts of Eastern Europe that was really fun (although still not as realistic as I preferred...)

I will say, I think just zooming the map on North America could maybe help with performance, even if its no 'new' content like the SVO mod.

I take back (most of) the stuff I said about Millennium Dawn. This puppet system is ASS. It's so fucking ass, like holy shit, I can't play as Russia without tag switching over to Canada, Zimbabwe, or whatever other shithole just so I can get the fucking US's or PRC's influence under 80, and if I don't notice? Fuck you, they get puppeted + a civil war. Mindboggling how there isn't a gamerule to make puppeting player specific.
Other than that, I don't know if it's a mod I'm using or base MD but there's this fucking rageinducing national spirit called "very high interest rates" that just fucking TANKS your stability and economy. That's not mentioning bullshit like Gaddafi using his family system to get himself into a civil war by the early 2000's, which was so annoying that I went into the mod files and made it so he got the BEST outcome for every family-related decision and he still got into a civil war because of the interest rate stability debuff.
Then there's the mindboggling stuff like AI America not having the invasion of Afghanistan decision despite having the option to invade Iraq, like... It's so retarded. To put it simply, I have no Sneed, and I must MATI.

The worst part is, an MD multiplayer game sounds so fun because noone would be randomly puppeting and doing autistic AI shit but it's HOI4 MP, so at the end of the day you'll still have to deal with bullshit like desync. I don't even remember it being THIS bad last time I played MD earlier this year.
