Opinion Charlie Kirk Was Practicing Politics the Right Way - NYT Readers chimping out in the comments

The foundation of a free society is the ability to participate in politics without fear of violence. To lose that is to risk losing everything. Charlie Kirk — and his family — just lost everything. As a country, we came a step closer to losing everything, too.

We’ve been edging closer for some time now. In 2020, a plot to kidnap Gretchen Whitmer, the governor of Michigan, was foiled by the F.B.I. In 2021, a mob stormed the Capitol in an effort to overturn the result of the election and pipe bombs were found at the Democratic and the Republican National Committee headquarters. In 2022, a man broke into the home of Nancy Pelosi, speaker of the House at the time, intending to kidnap her. She was absent, but the intruder assaulted her 82-year-old husband, Paul, with a hammer, fracturing his skull. In 2024, President Trump was nearly assassinated. That same year, Brian Thompson, the chief executive of UnitedHealthcare, was murdered.

In 2025, Molotov cocktails were thrown into the home of Gov. Josh Shapiro of Pennsylvania during Passover. Melissa Hortman, the former House speaker of Minnesota, and her husband were murdered, and State Senator John Hoffman and his wife were severely injured by a gunman. And on Wednesday, Kirk, the founder of Turning Point USA, was gunned down during a speech at Utah Valley University.

You can dislike much of what Kirk believed and the following statement is still true: Kirk was practicing politics in exactly the right way. He was showing up to campuses and talking with anyone who would talk to him. He was one of the era’s most effective practitioners of persuasion. When the left thought its hold on the hearts and minds of college students was nearly absolute, Kirk showed up again and again to break it. Slowly, then all at once, he did. College-age voters shifted sharply right in the 2024 election.

That was not all Kirk’s doing, but he was central in laying the groundwork for it. I did not know Kirk, and I am not the right person to eulogize him. But I envied what he built. A taste for disagreement is a virtue in a democracy. Liberalism could use more of his moxie and fearlessness. In the inaugural episode of his podcast, Gov. Gavin Newsom of California hosted Kirk, admitting that his son was a huge fan. What a testament to Kirk’s project.

On social media, I’ve seen mostly decent reactions to Kirk’s murder. There is grief and shock from both the left and the right. But I’ve seen two forms of reaction that are misguided, however comprehensible the rage or horror that provoked them. One is a move on the left to wrap Kirk’s death around his views — after all, he defended the Second Amendment, even admitting it meant accepting innocent deaths. Another is on the right, to turn his murder into a justification for an all-out war, a Reichstag fire for our time.

But as the list above reveals, there is no world in which political violence escalates but is contained to just your foes. Even if that were possible, it would still be a world of horrors, a society that had collapsed into the most irreversible form of unfreedom.

Political violence is a virus. It is contagious. We have been through periods in this country when it was endemic. In the 1960s there were the assassinations of John F. Kennedy, Malcolm X, Martin Luther King Jr., Robert F. Kennedy and Medgar Evers. In the 1970s, Gov. George Wallace was shot by a would-be assassin but survived, and Gerald Ford faced two assassination attempts in one month. In 1981 Ronald Reagan survived after John Hinckley Jr.’s bullet ricocheted off his rib and punctured his lung. These assassins and would-be assassins had different motives, different politics and different levels of mental stability. When political violence becomes imaginable, either as a tool of politics or a ladder for fame, it begins to infect hosts heedlessly.

American politics has sides. There is no use pretending it doesn’t. But both sides are meant to be on the same side of a larger project — we are all, or most of us, anyway, trying to maintain the viability of the American experiment. We can live with losing an election because we believe in the promise of the next election; we can live with losing an argument because we believe that there will be another argument. Political violence imperils that.

Kirk and I were on different sides of most political arguments. We were on the same side on the continued possibility of American politics. It is supposed to be an argument, not a war; it is supposed to be won with words, not ended with bullets. I wanted Kirk to be safe for his sake, but I also wanted him to be safe for mine and for the sake of our larger shared project. The same is true for Shapiro, for Hoffman, for Hortman, for Thompson, for Trump, for Pelosi, for Whitmer. We are all safe, or none of us are.

It’s one thing to say that Charlie Kirk’s death was a tragedy and to say that you mourn for his family, but it’s another one entirely to make up things like this.

Charlie was not practicing politics the right way. He wasn’t personally a violent person, but he used the tools he had available to him to induce others to commit violence on behalf of his own views. His ironclad support of Trump makes it abundantly clear that he had no regard for the right of his opponents to do the same things as him. When his political opponents were victims of violence from his own side, he laughed at them and encouraged people to support the perpetrators. He knowingly perpetuated the lie that the 2020 election was stolen, inducing the most significant recent case of political violence, then supported the pardons of every single participant. Charlie Kirk was not an opponent of political violence. He wasn’t one to get his own hands dirty, but he was happy to cheer on those who did.

We also can’t ignore that anyone who supports Trump to the hilt is a supporter of political violence. Trump is on a constant search for opportunities to use law enforcement and the military against those he disagrees with. Make no mistake, when Mahmoud Khalil, Rumeysa Ozturk, and Mohsen Mahdawi were imprisoned for constitutionally protected speech, that was political violence. The use of state instruments to perpetrate that violence gives it the veneer of legitimacy, but state violence can still be political violence, and people who push for and support that are not "doing politics the right way."

Before yesterday, I didn’t think I could hate them more. I didn’t realize how wrong I was. The problem is I cannot enumerate my thoughts without being banned and quite probably jailed.
Troll them by saying then communism is white supremacy in disguise and Lenin, Trotski and Karl Marx are a bunch of "fucking white males" as Aids Skrillex might said.

The absolute shamelessness of these fucking journalists to even pretend that they are not gleeful at this man's death. They never stopped seething that Kirk kept doing his little debate events and going to campuses to expose the indocrination of students into leftist drones. Now they pretend they were ok with it to try and stop the righteous pushback.

Equally amusing to see the golem refuse to be shut down and keep going. Have fun dealing with your TDS audience that is eager for blood retard, you asked for it.

I generally stay off of Reddit and twitter to maintain my sanity. I saw what they said yesterday, and trolling them just doesn’t seem fun anymore.

Call me if any of them end up on the watch people die thread.

Trump Is Building His Own Paramilitary Force

According to the article, the "Paramilitary Force" Trump is building is ICE and the Border Patrol. The logic is that Trump obviously has no valid motivation to increase the size of ICE other than creating a private army to terrorize the country with. They go on to complain about Trump cutting what they suddenly consider to be "good" government law enforcement like the FBI and DEA while expanding ICE.

The best way I've found to rationalize all of this, is that there is a certain and sizeable percentage of the human population who are simply, whether literally, or figuratively, born without souls. You can call them NPCs, you can call them golems, you can call them useful idiots, you can call them useless eaters, marxists, unwashed masses, but ultimately, they are all the same, and closer to animals than people. They exist only to extinguish life, history, and happiness, for everyone. I err towards the take that their soullessness is literal. I cannot see humanity in this mass of same-y vitriol. They simply receive their signal and act dutifully.

Maybe lose "faith in humanity", and regain faith in your friends and loved ones. Take care of the people close to you, or at most, those who you can take care of within the scope of your personal control. This is bigger than any one guy.

Hmm...I noticed several examples that were left out. I wonder why.

1. An op that involved more feds than suspects.
2. An op that was spurred on by feds and mostly consisted of people strolling around a public building.
3. Yes and they never found out who planted those bombs did they? Even though it is one of the most camera dense areas on the planet they just awww shucks could not nail down the video!
4. Get the fuck out of here with this horseshit.

This is the most disgusting type of propaganda.

What about the Summer of Lover or the nearly decade of Antifa occupation of Portland? What about Madonna describing her fantasies of blowing up the White House to raucous applause? What about Kathy Griffin holding a mock bloody Trump head or the hour or so of footage threatening violence against Trump and Trump supporters from celebs and members of the government?

Fuck the NY Times. I hope they go out of business and every ex employee is tattooed on the forehead with NYT so everyone knows what a fucking scumbag they are for the rest of their life.

Impossible to hate them enough.

WAIT THIS WAS EZRA FUCKING KLEIN? Holy shit the fucking balls.

Predestined salvation is a thing. Ephesians 1:4-5 describes how God, before the creation of the world, chose believers for adoption through Jesus Christ and predestined them for this purpose.

NYT and WaPo commenters radicalized me more than Kiwi Farms, 4chan, Trump, or Tucker ever could have. They make Redditors look well-adjusted by comparison.

Any and EVERY SINGLE nEwS site that does NOT ALLOW free and public commenting--NOT LINKED to facebook, or requiring a sign in, have radicalized me long before that.

I’m not having trouble rationalizing, my dim view on people is pretty stable. The thing is that the things I’ve seen in the past 24 hours have made me feel the sort of malice that even the worst brutality humanity can devise won’t be able satisfy. The only other time I remember feeling like this was roughly 24 years and six hours ago. I was too young to understand the gravity of that urge then.

Now I’m just not very fond of the monster I’m capable of being. If I were made absolute dictator right now, the things I’d do would make auschwitz look like Disney world in comparison, and this is bothering me in a way I can’t adequately explain. Call me an edgy faggot or whatever I don’t really care.

This is something I realized yesterday. While it appears that Democrats and liberal public figures are (mostly) being nice in addressing Charlie Kirk, you simultaneously see the audiences they've cultivated being ecstatic with bloodlust and shitting on the statements of said public figures as being too soft.

Another case in point, the Pod Save America podcast bros (Jon Favreau, Jon Lovett, and Tommy Vietor) are who I would call quintessential mainstream Democrat talking heads. They're friendly with Ezra Klein, but are a bit further Left on the account of how much sucking up they do to progressivism like good libs are expected to. Here's the emergency video they put out in regard to the assassination of Charlie Kirk:

I rate it as okay and expected for a lib response. They appear shocked and sad for Charlie Kirk himself. But notice that the comments on this video are turned off when that's not the normally the case for their YouTube channel. It's not something they'll dare to talk about, but it's easy to discern why they did this when you look over at the comments on their subreddit in posts about the assassination specifically and this video:

This is the audience of a mainstream liberal podcast, and the consensus I'm gathering from them is, at best, "I'm against political violence, but [Charlie Kirk deserved to die]", along with discontent with the podcast bros for being too soft on the person killed. It's horrifying that this sentiment is coming out of what is ostensibly mainstream liberal audiences, and the public figures they follow will probably be too embarrassed and cowardly to ever address it, just as the podcast bros avoided in this video.

I wouldn't call you edgy, I'd call you new and suggest that you funnel your hate into something useful and good, instead of burning out. Network with people and develop some kind of contingency plan with those people on what may come after this.
