I think it's most accurate to say that they don't want to admit that they aren't the bold rebels they grew up idolizing. They were told that being against the establishment was the pinnacle of badassery, and therefore they cannot accept the possibility that their beliefs have become mainstream and even potentially enforced by society. They need to keep being edgy and rebellious, because otherwise they're no longer the good guys in their worldview.
You forgot, also watching the establishment that pushed those views start dying and being replaced as well is probally also another mindfuck.
