That's part of why these combo fake fossils are so difficult to detect. If a moron does them, C14 does the trick, but if you have some weirdo in the field with access to ancient fragmentary fossils, they can make up a whole bunch of bullshit without it being obvious.
C14 is easy to measure. It gets more difficult when stuff is from different strata and got fossilized by different means. They'll eventually figure it out but I'd expect fossil hoaxes like Piltdown to occur from time to time for the foreseeable future.
I wouldn't be at all surprised if there are some imaginary species from stuff like this that haven't been caught yet.

There most definitely are, I'd say the probability that there aren't any would be very close to 0 -- some infinitesimal. There are so many species declared from very, very fragmentary remains that many of those specimens may actually just be specimens of an already described species(and that is argued about sometimes) or use parts from one. It's not uncommon for a new species to be declared from a handful of bone fragments. Here's an example in the recently described Tewkensuchus salamanquensis for how fragmentary they can be, having been described from fragments of what would make up our forehead(and also the 'Tewken' part of its name). This taxa's holotype(the original specimen used to describe the species which serves as a reference) was described from fragments of the skull.
This isn't untowards as far as paleontology goes but specimens like this are speculative as far as the whole body or its lifestyle and so it'd be easy to slip in parts from another fossil. A lot can still be gleamed from the size of certain body parts, as there are common ratios known for various groups of animals, so size estimates are less speculative than total body morphology at least. Isotope analyses can help to determine what their diet was, which can help, but it's always very possible for specimens to be mislabeled and thus attributed to the wrong period of time and thus justify a new species being described. In the case of a chimera though, not all specimens undergo isotopic analyses as these are destructive and require the breaking and removal of part of the fossil. Some fossils may lack enough organic material to be analyzed properly though.
Many specimens, mind you, are also collected decades prior, in some cases species have been described from preserved specimens that have been in the collection for over a hundred years. In the example I gave, the fragments were collected in 2008 and 2022(sometimes fossils are left on the site if they can't all be collected during an expedition and are then collected on a return trip, other times not all of the fragments are found before an expedition has to conclude and so the excavation is just resumed when they return). It would be all too easy for someone to take forgotten pieces of a fossil in collection that haven't been described yet and to add them into the fold of one they want to make up. There are of course archives and logs, but specimens disappear from collections all of the time for various reasons. Someone could also take pieces of a fossil from the collection and plant them on the site to "discover."

Pretty much all organized religions started off as subversive movements that eventually gained legitimacy through power; the ones that failed tend to survive as "occultism," with future subversives gathering old occultism to create a new religion (this explains what happened with theosophy and its influence). The best example is Zoroastrianism pretty much being a big fuck you to old Hinduism, inverting their gods as demons and whatnot, the same with the Abrahamic faiths and paganism. Christianity starting off as a subversive cosmopolitan/dionysian cult, but once they gained legitimacy through law, then they turned into an orderly/apollonian/sun worshiping one. Oh they've been getting fossils wrong for years. Mainly because there's so few of them they find a bone and it's a leg bone and they have to try to figure out the whole thing from that. Or you have Hallucinogenia which they got completely upside down and the head on the wrong way.
There was some dinosaurs that just didn't even have a head? And then when they did put a head on the body it was the wrong one that was too small just to have a head. And I think at one point brontosaurus stopped being a brontosaurus and then recently became a brontosaurus again? Cuz I guess they thought it might have been another dinosaur with the stuff mixed up so yeah. (Those 2 examples might even be the same story I'm not that big into dinosaurs sorry.)
Or even dinosaurs having feathers look how long it took for us to even find a fossil that had it in the first place.
Think what you might be talking about is when they had a triceratops and another dinosaur and they weren't sure if it was a new species or if it was just a juvenile.
There's so many cool and weird animals that probably lived on the earth that we will never know about because they didn't die in the right conditions for it to be preserved so much later.
Getting things wrong has been happening for a while and probably going to continue as long as we are species and find fossils honestly. Especially since we've only really been finding fossils and calling them what they were since the 1800s. It's not a lot of time on the grand scheme of things.
