The Shawn Levy-directed film will place five years after the events of 2019’s The Rise of Skywalker
Ryan Gosling is set to lead a new Star Wars film, titled Star Wars: Starfighter, with production set to begin this fall. Shawn Levy, who recently directed Deadpool & Wolverine, will direct the project, which will release in theaters on May 28, 2027.

The announcement was made by Lucasfilm’s President Kathleen Kennedy and Chief Creative Officer Dave Filoni at the annual Star Wars Celebration in Tokyo. According to a press release, the new installment in the franchise will take place approximately five years after the events of 2019’s Star Wars: Episode IX – The Rise of Skywalker and is described as an “entirely new adventure” featuring “all-new characters set in a period of time that has not been explored on screen yet.”

“Being here and seeing all of you [makes it] more inspiring to do it. There’s so much creativity and imagination in this room and there’s so much love. It’s such a great reminder of how much movies can mean to us, specifically how much these movies mean to us,” said Gosling, who appeared at the event alongside Levy. “The force is a mysterious thing, but, as I’m here, the force is the fans. All we can hope for is, ‘May the fans be with us.’”

Speaking to fans, Levy confirmed the uncharted territory for the upcoming film, “This is not a prequel, this is not a sequel. It’s a new adventure.”
Starfighter will hit theaters a year after the Mandalorian spinoff The Mandalorian & Grogu, which premieres May 22, 2026.

Rogue Squadron. All people wanted was Rogue Squadron but that would require Disney to acknowledge the EU before they bought Star Wars.
I'm honestly still fucking baffled as to why they did what they did with the EU. We're talking about a company that pretty much exists as is today because they took previously written work and adapted it. They had literally an entire universe full of shit to adapt and instead Star Wars is the one time in Disney history they decide instead of just ripping off beloved existing things they're going to try and get 'creative'. I really don't understand buying an IP with a shit ton of existing media to pull ideas from and just shrugging your shoulders towards all that shit you paid a metric shitton of money for.

After using the knife of MeToo it was time to destroy everything that young, white males loved.

KNo, they won't be making this.

It's just another movie they announce and, just like the dozens they have announced before, nothing will be done, and they'll hope it's forgotten about, just like all the others.

It's dead. The whole franchise is dead, and all that's left are a few retarded vultures picking at it's rotting corpse.

Exactly. This announcement is a PR move to try to generate interest in the brand, and Gosling’s team said “sure” because it keeps his name out there. But it didn’t work because of what I quoted below:

They just announced a ton of games and series in the last Star Wars event and the only thing I've seen people talk about was Darth Jar Jar in fucking Fortnite out of all things, what I'm trying to say is that this franchise is a rotting carcass of a horse that was beat to death years ago.

This is this reason the PR move made no impact. Nobody cares. Star Wars has less cultural relevancy than Game of Thrones.

I remember years ago, reddit was giddy over Disney acquiring 20th Century Fox because they wanted their X-Men and Fantastic 4 slop done by Disney. Before that, Star Wars being acquired by Disney made them jump for joy.

Point being, somebody (nobody from that EFAP group or others like it) should make a full documentary or essay on how Rian Johnson killed Star Wars. How Kathleen Kennedy coasted to major Hollywood success only to fail miserably with her first IP. How Mark Hamill is a raging psycho. How the Star Wars fandom have wasted their life to love a franchise that actively hates them. How The Acolyte was even greenlit to begin with. Mainly though, how Star Wars holds no cultural relevance and should just die.

I was going to say that I thought this movie was already announced and then cancelled. Are they so hopelessly out of ideas that they are now reannouncing movies they already canceled?

Ryan Gosling stares moodily into space, ignoring the two lesbian stars of the film as they exchange clunky exposition about Darth Orangeman while Phoebe Waller-Bridge toes them all in the Millennium Falcon behind her bigger, better Millennium Falcon. C3PO is scared by something, R2D2 beeps, four thousand computer programmers permit Chewbacca to close his eyes.

It'll happen just like the last couple of trilogies and spin-off's they announced would happen. I.E. never.

It's impressive how despite people screaming for *checks notes* over a decade now at Disney what they want from Star Wars and what they would like to see they cannot understand it and keep doubling down. It's not just incompetence, it's straight up denial of reality. You could grab a random fanfic writer off AO3 (even some of the porn ones) and get a better Trilogy than what Kennedy shat out.

The actor and would-be character is too old for their incompetent, inexperienced, immature writers. These people can't even write a good story for young characters. It will be even dumber than the Kidz Bop version Star Trek movies, because the character will act like teenager despite being 50.

Star Wars is the one time in Disney history they decide instead of just ripping off beloved existing things they're going to try and get 'creative'.
No, eckshually, there were a few times recently they got truly """creative""". The first recent one was Emperor's New Groove, then Atlantis and Lilo and Stitch (successful and beloved by Kiwis) immediately after. Then, Wreck-It Ralph, Zootopia, Moana, Raya, Encanto, Strange World, and Wish, plus various sequels. The Lion King and Frozen are so far removed from their inspirations they might count as original, too.

With Star Wars, they arguably did the same thing they've "always" done: took a beloved original and "adapted" it, producing a standalone piece of content for the big screen. The beloved original was the OT, and the result was a piece of shit. They should've done a Marvel (remix a mass of written content into a movie series), and they planned to do a Marvel, but they did the basic Disney thing, contrary to their own stated goals, because Kathleen Kennedy lives in a thot bubble and thot it was a good idea.

I was mostly referring to the EU and the shit ton of books, comics, games and other media they could have just directly lifted stories from rather than just completely ignoring them and in a lot of cases retconning them for the worse. There's already been like two sequels to the OT or something like that.
