The Shawn Levy-directed film will place five years after the events of 2019’s The Rise of Skywalker
Ryan Gosling is set to lead a new Star Wars film, titled Star Wars: Starfighter, with production set to begin this fall. Shawn Levy, who recently directed Deadpool & Wolverine, will direct the project, which will release in theaters on May 28, 2027.

The announcement was made by Lucasfilm’s President Kathleen Kennedy and Chief Creative Officer Dave Filoni at the annual Star Wars Celebration in Tokyo. According to a press release, the new installment in the franchise will take place approximately five years after the events of 2019’s Star Wars: Episode IX – The Rise of Skywalker and is described as an “entirely new adventure” featuring “all-new characters set in a period of time that has not been explored on screen yet.”

“Being here and seeing all of you [makes it] more inspiring to do it. There’s so much creativity and imagination in this room and there’s so much love. It’s such a great reminder of how much movies can mean to us, specifically how much these movies mean to us,” said Gosling, who appeared at the event alongside Levy. “The force is a mysterious thing, but, as I’m here, the force is the fans. All we can hope for is, ‘May the fans be with us.’”

Speaking to fans, Levy confirmed the uncharted territory for the upcoming film, “This is not a prequel, this is not a sequel. It’s a new adventure.”
Starfighter will hit theaters a year after the Mandalorian spinoff The Mandalorian & Grogu, which premieres May 22, 2026.

It's set five years after the last one - that nobody liked - and is an entirely new story, with all new characters. Even if you like Star Wars, is there literally any reason for this film to be set in that universe, other than the fact that, presumably, Disney spent a lot of money on the license and they want to get their money's worth? Even reading the blurb, all I can think is 'why'?

Dr. Scientist Man says yes hello sunk cost fallacy. And lots of manbabies on the internet wrote wordswordswords about Rogue Squadron for a long time so obviously the movie will make money! Except it isn't Rogue Squadron so those manbabies who are already angry at Disney will be angrier, and the movie will suck so no one else will go watch it either. This is another Disney movie that by all accounts so far is going to be appealing to enough people to make it back 60-70% of its total production cost. I don't hate the decision to get Ryan Gosling, he could be good in a Star Wars movie. Lots of actors could. But not a Disney Star Wars movie

They just announced a ton of games and series in the last Star Wars event and the only thing I've seen people talk about was Darth Jar Jar in fucking Fortnite out of all things, what I'm trying to say is that this franchise is a rotting carcass of a horse that was beat to death years ago.
 
I was thinking that I had managed to get through life without seeing a single thing he was in, but then I remembered he was the lead Blade Runner 2049. So entirely memorable that I completely blanked him out in what was a movie I liked. He's just so generic.

Blöthar the Barbarian from Gwar seems to like him, he was creeping on him while molesting a Ken doll before Gwar covered "I'm Just Ken" for AV Undercover last year, so what do I know.

I guess they're hoping the stink of the sequels will be forgotten in 25+ months? Theres a better chance the remaining fans will lose interest after the "good" TV shows finish/decline into mediocrity. At least they havent decided to ruin the Kotor universe yet.
 
I will admit that I like Ryan Gosling, and it's obvious that Hollywood realizes he is one of the few stars under 50 with any name recognition, but Star Wars is a zombie brand. Disney needs to let it sit for at least a decade without ANYTHING involving it, then quietly retcon all the dumb shit they have done since they purchased it from Lucas. Every new failed attempt is just digging the hole deeper. Not to mention there is a zero percent chance that Disney's Lucasfilm will do anything other than use Gosling as a Trojan Horse to slip in the real main character, Generic Brown Girl Boss who is an insufferable, possibly evil Mary Sue, that spends her time degrading Gosling's character. Just so you get that true, homegrown white male hatred we all know and love.

I usually like Ryan Gosling's movies, but since his role in Barbie, seems like he is just going for whatever pays well. Good on him for being successful, but I will pass.
