Obsucure anime/manga you enjoy? - After watching some classics like æon flux and The Big O, I figured I should try to see what you guys like.

So, To start off, I’ve been a frequent anime enthusiast (if you even call it that) for the majority of my high school year before I graduated, and during that time I found some hidden gems, typically obscure to the western world. Here’s some of my favorites to start.

The first ever anime I watched in my freshman year was Mononoke (Not to be mistaken with Mononoke Hime). It’s about a Medicine seller that roams around Edo Japan, to exorcise yokai, or in other words, “Mononoke” (hence the title.) The studio that worked on the project recently released the movie Mononoke Karakasa, with another movie released on march 14 of this year. This anime franchise was an absolute rollercoaster despite its rather slow pacing to the rising action. Definitely worth the watch.

It's hard to tell what's obscure and what isn't (besides the super popular dragon ball, naruto etc.) so apologies if this one is well known.
I haven't seen a lot of anime, but I liked Naoki Urasawa's "Monster", essentially a slow-burn cold-war/post cold-war thriller that eschews most anime tropes (besides one rather long monologue before a character passes away from blood loss) and could work just as well as a typical scandi-style crime thriller.
The central moral dilemma of it boils down to: if you save someone who goes on to commit atrocities, do you also bear a moral burden for them?

that anime got me thinking about sacrifice and ethics, when I just wanted something crazy to watch. I loved the concept, and the message in the anime struck me. Like is it worth saving the worst person possible, just so they can do more damage? That was a thought provoker.

I don't really watch anime anymore but all the old 80s and 90s seinen films and OVAs like Venus Wars or Tank Police were sick back in the day.

If you want obscure anime, Id say that by definition any anime today isn't really obscure.

You do have some good OVAs and anime from the 80s and 90s that are pretty obscure, stuff like Ultimate Teacher, Madbull 34, Doomed Megalopolis, etc. These are anime that simply didn't make it in the West, and even in Japan were pretty niche- before anime became popular

But basically, if its picked to be an anime today, or in the past decade- its something that was super popular as a manga.

Obscure manga, thats where its at imo. The manga that, for whatever reason, can't or won't be adapted. Shamos a fun one, for example.

that anime got me thinking about sacrifice and ethics, when I just wanted something crazy to watch. I loved the concept, and the message in the anime struck me. Like is it worth saving the worst person possible, just so they can do more damage? That was a thought provoker.

I’ve planned to read it at some point, the concept would’ve been really good if it was adapted. Also, at this point anime has been pretty popular lately, was just born at the wrong time before I’ve would’ve been considered “cool”.

I've watched so much anime I'll have to go through and find the obscure titles that were surprisingly good, which'll take a while.

So to start:

Blue Seed starts out as a horror Shinto involving plant demons invading Tokyo and destined sacrifice to seal them away, and then becomes a love triangle with a touch of angst. The characters have surprising chemistry together, and you get to spend time with the police unit at times. It's a good time, recommended.


Ushio & Tora also seriously needs more love outside of Japan. It's described as Calvin & Hobbes on LSD in that the LSD is yokai-hunting. I would highly recommend reading the manga as it's a long journey split up as "stories" than arcs and a lot of those stories were sadly not adapted, though the ones that were in the anime worked out in the end despite the absence of some really good ones. There's a '90s OVA that's only 10 episodes long, so if you want to taste it before deciding to jump in, try that first.

Also, not sure it's actually obscure (I never see anyone talking about it), but Tamayura. Ridiculously wholesome and relaxing from start to finish. Same director that did Aria.

Anyone else remember Green Legend Ran? Blood: The Last Vampire?

Duuuuude I'm shocked that went under the radar of the CGDCT iyashikei crowd. Was such a cozy watch every week.


Yama no Susume also for some reason seems to not be talked about. I can't believe mountain climbing looks so relaxing.

• East of Eden (worth a watch, but I feel like it could have been done better)
• Princess Tutu (it both is and is not what you'd think it is if you watch the trailer)

Project Blue: Earth SOS is a neat little 2000s OVA. It's a throwback to classic sci-fi and has an intentionally cheesy, retro feel to it. Kinda putters out at the end, but I think it's an entertaining watch.

3x3 Eyes is a cool one too. Guy gets involved with a big war involving a cute demon girl.
