tl;dr: Trump isn't "antsy to give Elon the boot" so much as there is term limit on how long Elon can run DOGE without being subject to congressional approval. to whit while the whitehouse can hire anyone they want, if they are doing agency head type work they have to get congressional approval and its almost certain that when some democrat congress critter sues the administration the type of work Elon is doing is almost certainly going to be ruled as governmental function and subject to congress.
And Elon's brainworms are not going to pass the senate.

Elon doesn't have actual authority to issue any cuts or changes, he can only recommend them to Trump. (Who will rubber-stamp them, yes, but that doesn't change Elon's legal status as not-an-acting-official) Therefore, he is not the legal head of any agency and does not require Congressional approval. A half dozen lawsuits have gone down this road already and failed. The only thing that will ever get him out of his position is when Trump runs out his term and the successor, if a Democrat, will fire him. Aside from that? He can stay until he's had enough or breaks a law, an actual law, not the made-up ones the Dems keep telling the public exist like "you can't fire a probationary employee without Congressional approval" and "you can't downsize an Executive office without Congressional approval".
