Pornhub will block access for Floridians on Jan. 1 - Restrictions will take place in protest of the state's new age verification requirements.

Restrictions will take place in protest of the state's new age verification requirements.

No one in Florida will be able to access Pornhub, the most trafficked pornography website worldwide, as of Jan. 1.

Officials with Aylo, the parent company to the pornography site, confirmed it will deny access for all users in the state. An email from the company made clear the restriction will happen in protest of new age verification requirements imposed by a state law (HB 3) going into effect in 2025.

“Unfortunately, the way many jurisdictions worldwide, including Florida, have chosen to implement age verification is ineffective, haphazard and dangerous,” reads an email from Aylo. “Any regulations that require hundreds of thousands of adult sites to collect significant amounts of highly sensitive personal information is putting user safety in jeopardy. Moreover, as experience has demonstrated, unless properly enforced, users will simply access non-compliant sites or find other methods of evading these laws.”

The new statute imposes age verification requirements on pornography websites and any other publishers of content known to be “harmful to minors.”

Lawmakers scoffed at the web publisher’s tactic.

“The fact that they’ve chosen to shut down instead complying to ensure that children aren’t accessing their site tells us exactly who their real target audience is,” said state Rep. Chase Tramont, a Port Orange Republican and the prime sponsor for the age verification bill passed this year.

“To be clear, Aylo has publicly supported age verification of users for years,” the email reads, “but we believe that any law to this effect must preserve user safety and privacy, and must effectively protect children from accessing content intended for adults.”

Pornography sites have previously restricted access to content in protest of similar laws. Aylo noted that Pornhub has also tried to comply with laws in other states only to see users in those jurisdictions flock to less reputable sources for titillation.

“We have seen how this scenario plays out in the United States. In Louisiana last year, Pornhub was one of the few sites to comply with the new law,” Aylo’s email reads. “Since then, our traffic in Louisiana dropped approximately 80%. These people did not stop looking for porn. They just migrated to darker corners of the internet that don’t ask users to verify age, that don’t follow the law, that don’t take user safety seriously, and that often don’t even moderate content. In practice, the laws have just made the internet more dangerous for adults and children.”

Aylo reiterated a position it held as Florida’s law was being debated, that age verification requirements should occur at the device-level, such as requirements for smartphone manufacturers to limit access.

“The best solution to make the internet safer, preserve user privacy, and prevent children from accessing adult content is performing age verification at the source: on the device,” the Aylo email reads.

“The technology to accomplish this exists today. What is required is the political and social will to make it happen. We are eager to be part of this solution and are happy to collaborate with government, civil society and tech partners to arrive at an effective device-based age verification solution. In addition, many devices already offer free and easy-to-use parental control features that can prevent children from accessing adult content without risking the disclosure of sensitive user data.”

They aren't wrong

Pornhub, whatever it might be, is mainstream and visible. It doesn't hide whats on offer there and it does appear to respond to takedown requests and prohibit illegal material.

There are, I have no doubt, far less transparent providers far less amiable towards complaints about revenge porn and the like.

I don't think this is suddenly going to lead to Floridians developing hard kinks, but it is going to drive the market into less regulated corners.
Pretty sure paying people to have sex with you is illegal in most states. Does dealing heroin become legal if I film it and sell the tapes? Does murder? How about violating the civil rights act? The ruling on porn being legal is even more retarded than Roe.

Not like there aren’t a thousand other options out there. Besides, 90% of their library got nuked a few years ago anyways. I’m surprised anyone still uses it.

"Slippery slope is real except when it comes to giving the government more power over the internet."
PATRIOT Act means nothing to you people.
“The fact that they’ve chosen to shut down instead complying to ensure that children aren’t accessing their site tells us exactly who their real target audience is,” said state Rep. Chase Tramont, a Port Orange Republican and the prime sponsor for the age verification bill passed this year.
Fuck off, Helen Lovejoy.

Delusional.

They have been sued by hundreds of victims for refusing to take down videos of their rape. They have a single moderator to review flagged videos and a backlog of over 700,000 reports. Despite saying they verify creators by ID they admitted in leaked e-mails that they actually make zero effort to do so. You are being massively fooled by their PR campaign to appear reputable. They are criminals who monetize childrape.

If you are a man who watches pornography you are directly supporting sex trafficking and child rape and have probably jerked off to it.

Only sensible thing they could do. More sites, non porn sites should follow. This shit will not stop at porn. It also means the end of anonymity online. These types of laws are little more than blackmail list threats. And that is likely a large part of the point.

I mean in the medium term, these laws are legally.. questionable at best. But it could cause a lot of damage in the short term.

They get around the laws by saying "The sex is consensual and not paid for. We're paying them for allowing us to record and distribute it."

This works because they have shit-tons of money to lobby/bribe/ect.

I don't use porn. It's generally reprehensible and degrading to all involved.

The fact is, this is not about pornography, no matter what they might claim. Rather, it's about two loosely connected things:

1) parents abdicating responsibility for the raising and behaviour of their children,
2) the state seeking to extend its control over how, or even whether, you may access information contrary to its own propaganda.

(1) has been argued to death in other contexts. In this particular context, the parental desire to abdicate that responsibility is the lever the state has used to pry open resistance against the ever greater assertion of state intervention into the life of the individual. "Think of the children" is the most basic form of emotional manipulation possible, with "it's only going to stop those dirty sinners" bringing up a close second. Anyone who argues for even the thin end of this level of state intervention in their lives is a fucking moron; you only have to look across to my side of the Atlantic to see where this will lead.

The fundamental issue is this: The mechanisms required to enforce this law require the digitalisation and centralisation of ID.

It is not merely a replication of showing your physical ID in a store; there, your ID is not digitised and stored in a central database, alongside everything you purchased and every location you visited. Multiple US states are already enacting digital ID systems, backed by behavioural databases, with the ultimate intent that all services shall require the use of these IDs for access, with a centralised administration of permissions that shall be used to prevent access to services for people deemed unworthy of freedom by the state. Don't think you're safe and can say this far, no more, just because it hasn't happened yet. They said the same about your Patriot Act, and look how far they've run with that little box of tricks in the last 25 years. "We'll only do it to the bad people" is currently biting the American left on their arses harder than a pitbull bites a baby's head.

If you argue for this, it will become your prison. "It could never happen here" is cope of the highest order.

A) VPN exists.
B) If too stupid to know how to do it, just find another site.

Gooners and porn addicts will find a way around anyways.

Thanks to the asshole Florida DJs on FM radio yesterday at 6 PM, directly after playing a Christmas song, saying "hey there's been some really bad news, everyone sitting down for this? Pornhub is getting blocked for Florida..."

Thanks, those of us with elementary school kids in the car really fucking appreciated it, especially how the "bad news" tag made them cue into it and ask a lot of questions.

I ain't reading all that

Oh no, my porn!!!!!!!!!!

Don't care anymore. I'm well aware of this being a backdoor for internet censorship but I just don't care anymore. Whenever any other wrong thought was targeted no one gave a fuck but now that it's the precious porn I'm suppose to do free labor to protect their rights after they go out of their way to mock and belittle anything considered right wing and/or Christian?

Enjoy the bed you made.
