It's to do with the 'Q' angle-that is, the angle the hips attatch to the pelvis at, and how that affects the way the femur sits on top of the knee joint (along with other small but definable differences in skin tone, muscle definition, fat distribution etc); because women have a wider pelvis our legs come down at an appreciably bigger angle than male ones do and it makes the whole line of the leg look completely different even under clothes.
