Toymaker Hasbro, Inc. announced on Tuesday said it would acquire Saban’s Power Rangers and other entertainment assets in a cash-and-stock deal valued at $522 million.

The transaction also includes other properties including “My Pet Monster,” “Popples,” “Julius Jr.,” “Luna Petunia” and “Treehouse Detectives.” Hasbro and Saban brands previously announced a $22 million master toy licensing agreement set to begin next year.

Hasbro will pay nearly $230 million in cash and issue $270 in Hasbro common stock for the assets. The sale is expected to during the second quarter of 2018.

The Power Rangers franchise, first started in 1993 by Haim Saban, is one of the longest-running live-action kids series. It has now spawned a number of movies including last year’s Lionsgate picture, which grossed $142 million globally.

“Power Rangers is an iconic brand built on a heritage of great storytelling and merchandising with tremendous upside potential when fully executed across Hasbro’s Brand Blueprint,” Brian Goldner, Hasbro chairman and CEO, said in a statement.

Goldner said Hasbro sees opportunities for toys, games, consumer products, digital gaming and entertainment. Saban is expected to serve in a consulting role to Hasbro, Goldner added.

“Twenty-five years after launching Power Rangers, I believe the future for this brand has never been greater,” Saban said. “Hasbro’s leadership in innovation, storytelling and brand stewardship make it the perfect company to further develop the global reach and appeal of the Power Rangers property.”

Hasbro stock is down nearly 2% to $86.35. The deal comes as toymakers are adjusting to the fallout of the bankruptcy of Toys R Us, which is having major impact on companies such as Hasbro, Mattel, and other companies in the supply chain.

Thread's been necroed but I know why.
Somehow this clip I found while trying to find something else explains everything.

Is power rangers a big seller..?

It feels like a product of it's time and is so painfully generic that you would make a more interesting clone of it that looked 95% the same and still be considered distinct.
I wouldn't really call it "painfully generic" but yeah it's something that probbaly could only work when it did. The first power rangers was a 90s dub over/footage replacement job of a pre-existing foreign show because Saban was cheap as hell and it somehow managed to be still unique enough even with the weird ass shit they jammed in that it hit it big popularity wise. Superhero/sentai shows are still pretty fucking popular overseas. You'd think more of these Japanese shows would be imported straight up nowadays but instead the western market is pretty much solely subbed stuff and expensive ass imports aimed at western collectors that'll shell out upmarked prices for what are essentially kids toys now and the only thing still quasi marketed towards kids is fucking power rangers which as stated prior exists pretty much almost entirely as a reshoot/splice job of pre-existing shows.

To be fair megaranger, gingaman, hurricanger & go-onger's adaption were pretty original.

Megaranger was a video game/high school slice of life, gingaman was equestrian & go-onger was a comedy.

To be honest I rather sentai & kamen rider be a niche product. Last thing we need is western coordinators trying to pozz sentai after kingohger or suggestion taro & saoni are gay coded.

My kids annoyed me with that shit in the mid 90's, and can't say I've seen or heard anything about Power Rangers in decades. I've mostly forgot it even existed.

Was paying 500 mil for it a good idea? Times have changed. It's going to be very difficult to reboot it for a modern audience or do anything useful with it. Fuck, it's too late even for a Tranny Rangers reboot

It's been rebooted several times now. The OG article that started this thread was in 2018. Since then hasbro's mainly used the power rangers stuff for merchandizing and weird crossover shit, but weirdly none of the obvious ones to do like transformers considering they drive transforming animal robots no it was all weird stuff that technically already got done back in the day like TMNT but without an actual TV crossover like they had back then. SO crossover stuff without actual crossover specials which is weirdly the inverse of back in the day when they had occasional crossover specials but no crossover merch. Hasbro did a lot less with it than they probably could have honestly.

The the ceo of hasbro at the time was a former president of Bandai America during the post mighty morphin rebirth before disney acquired the brand. He befriended saban throughout his tenure, he never gave hasbro the heads up and bought power rangers, I think it was half money & half stock that valued to 500 million, not 500 million outright. So hasbro is stuck with a property they had no interest in owning because the ceo died 3 years after acquiring the brand.

And now who could be the next sucker who would like to buy the Power Rangers franchise from Hasbro?

6 years later Power Rangers got killed off because the lightning collection didn't hit the threshold of sales, 3 pitched reboots were got canned (constantly pushing for a female red is literally all hasbro got) & partially selling the toy license to playmates with mighty morphin toyline.
Hasbro is operating on unironic nigganomics, they keep paying billions for shit only to fumble it down into low millions or shove it in a closet

My Little Power Rangers confirmed
Most non-morphenomenal.
I fucking hated Power Rangers, everyone loved that crap in the 90's. I do however love Hasbro and their brand immensely. If you think about it, Saban does have a shit ton of other marketable licenses that Hasbro could profit off of as well. $522 Million is seriously a drop in the bucket for Hasbro for the rights to all of the IPs. They'll make it work, I'm sure.
I was a 90s kid myself, I didn't really get it myself. I still find the general campiness of the whole thing amusing though. By the way, Super Sentai is better, nobody gives a shit about all that teenage hormones trying to do comedy crap in between battles.

I do love the parodies it spawned though, but I love parodies in general.

Well, a wide release theatrical Power Rangers film came out last year, for whatever it matters. It was forgettable and probably lost money, but not much.
I saw it one night and yeah it could have been better, I heard they're making another one.

Then again there's talk about making a Skibidi Toilet movie, what would be hilarious is if it outperformed MMPR 2.
a commie writing commie shit in GI Joe comics.
Hahahaha

Literally WHAT

Hasbro entertainment has to be one of the worst managed companies and I look forward to them being bought out by the Chinese actually I look forward to everything being brought out by the Chinese because at least the Chinese only care about making money
Why even bother, they make plenty of money with these at flea markets.

The mismanagement of power rangers honestly you should cost someone their job. To understand how badly it went after, I must explain the four eras. the OG Saban era was when power rangers at its absolute peak in sales and cultural relevancy, this led to them being bought out by Disney who made a butt ton of money off the brand. Saban seeing the thing he used to own make more money than when he owned it, used his Jew gold to buy the franchise back. The neo Saban era is where everything started to fall apart, due to two factors. The first being inaccessibility of the currently running iteration of the show. It was on at a weird time on a cable channel, and series would run 2 years with a mid-season break as opposed to changing theme every year as was done prior. They tried to do a live action movie series, but people didn't like the first one and it didn't do well enough to be continued. The second Factor is the significant drop in the quality of merchandise. This was caused by bandai America not wanting to pay to use bandai Japan's super Sentai molds as it would be cheaper for them to produce their own. Power rangers megazords used to be fairly high quality and the exact same figure as was released in Japan sans some paint changes and the rounding off of sharp points. This combination proceeded to drive the brand into borderline irrelevancy, until Hasbro bought it. They proceeded to fuck up what should have been the easiest win for them in the entire world. When it came to Media they were only able to put out one special on Netflix, with multiple other projects promised and then canceled. On the merchandise side they were doing fairly well until they made some truly retarded decisions. Shoddy distribution, an overabundance of exclusives that were required to complete teams, and only three giant robots released in 5 years. These factors managed to completely evaporate all the good will of the fan base.

My kids annoyed me with that shit in the mid 90's, and can't say I've seen or heard anything about Power Rangers in decades. I've mostly forgot it even existed.
It was popular but I don't remember anybody really going apeshit over it. Not like Pokemon when it took off a couple years later.

It was never really my thing, to be honest even at that age I thought it looked retarded.

My guess is Saban for pennies and then he turns it into a half billion dollar brand again. You know, just like how the Disney era ended.
Unfortunately not likely. Maybe he'll buy the brand back, but Hasbro had 0 plans for Power Rangers. They're also auctioning off EVERYTHING. They did have Beast Morphers, which had a vault of a lot of older Power Rangers accessories, so I imagine Hasbro has quite a bit to auction off from all the previous seasons.

TV has changed so much, it's harder for a show like this to adapt without some pretty radical changes.

The "kids" that watched this show are now 40-something if they started at the beginning, and not much younger if they caught a later iteration.

Nothing I've seen indicates that modern kids are interested in it, they're all TikTok zombies with no desire to watch TV let alone rebooted franchises from 30 years past.

Whoever said that toys these days really don't sell to kids, but rather, their aging Parents and Uncles is right. And that's' the problem.

As I see it, the lifetime of these 90's franchises is coming up against a hard wall of demographic/technological change that means anyone truly interested in them is only going to be buying the brand for another decade? Maybe? Before they age out of consumerism with no younger replacements coming.

Because the system that held the show-to-kids-to-toys pipeline up has been rendered obsolete by technology.

People are so glued to devices these days that they not only don't want to watch a show, they wouldn't go outside and play with the toys it was meant to sell anyway.

The moral guardians blasted G.I. Joe and Transformers in my day as nothing but half-hour commercials for toys.

But at least I took my tanks and transforming planes and ran through the yard a little bit with them.... that was at least something positive health-wise. And you could learn some basics of mechanics by fixing your stuff when an arm/wheel came off, or doing the "some assembly required" part of a large playset.

Whereas nowadays, you just link your parents credit card to an online ap and play the phone game over and over. That's the limit of your interaction.

Now, you no good kids get off my lawn! (but, while you're out there, at least look for where Starscream might be, he was shot down out there sometime in 1988 and I haven't seen him since)

I'll never forget how I saw the movie with people from work and the black guy in our group was so pissed that they made the only black ranger autistic and then killed him. Makes me laugh every time.
