I’m a young person who’s never done this before—how do I go about getting a lawyer (for a domestic violence situation), especially with a very constrained budget? [NY]

I’m a 20 year old living in NYC. In 2017, I was physically abused, held captive, subject to having my property destroyed to prevent my escape, kept from having access to food, prevented from transitioning at the age of majority, physically coerced to sign over my power of attorney (I did not do it), and prohibited from calling 911. I was unable to report my parents’ actions because I was a vulnerable trans person of color in a conservative rural area in PA, and a local police officer worked with my parents to ensure that I stayed home.

Later that year, I escaped my abusive household and cut contact with my parents. Since then, they have sent me several unwelcome letters, sent me several emails to several accounts, both personal and professional, blocked all contact between my little sister and me, stolen my paycheck, stolen money my grandmother sent to me, cut off my health insurance, and used my name on a credit card.

Nearly two years later, despite my blocking, my parents are still sending me emails, messages, letters, you name it. It’s like trying to hit a whack a mole. I’ve even received messages saying they know where I am and what I’m doing.

I’m done. I want a restraining order against my parents, and I’m considering suing for monetary damages, as I’ve been left homeless except for my dorm, and due to ptsd I need to take a leave of absence. I’ve also saved as much evidence as possible. I’m not interested in pursuing criminal charges unless my parents were to violate a restraining order.

The problem is, I don’t even know how to begin to find a lawyer. I’ve tried to contact some hotlines and other public resources, but nothing has come of it. I can’t afford to pay someone for their work. And, as an added challenge, I would need someone who really knows their shit, as my father is a very wealthy man who can definitely afford a great lawyer.

The more I get contacted, and the more stalkerish my parents have become, the more terrified I am. I appreciate all the advice I can get.

But the common theory that the sexual assaults these types of people always claim are true and the source of their pathology, assumes that these people are lying/exaggerating/delusional about literally everything else except the sexual assault, which was absolutely true and honest and went down exactly as they say it did.

What would explain the difference between sexual assault victims who end up like this, a very recognizable type of liar and grifter and lunatic, and the many more who do not? Occam's razor suggests that the difference is most parsimoniously explained this way:

"Pathological liars lie about everything."

And in my experience working with them, they actually favor lies that are non-falsifiable through the fortification of social taboo.

No one will ask you to produce that your mom REALLY died in a car crash. They'd be a monster if it turned out you were telling the truth.

Pseudologia Fantastica can be part of another mental disorder, and it can appear independently of them. Of course, there are many options for someone who lives like that. Like shelters and community care facilities and homeless hotels. Oh:

This one spent literally months saying she was going to kill herself. Her "hints" weren't so much hints as directly saying she was doing it because no one would just give her an apartment to live in independently while she isn't capable of independent living. She claimed to have an "arterial bleed" that was apparently 4 stitches on her scalp (the ones she picked open, apparently in an effort to bleed to death, but it was just a scalp wound that was mostly healed by then so no luck).

Her last few months of tweets are honestly this wild ride of learned helplessness, where she thinks she can just howl at people to do stuff for her while she stays in bed all the time, lets her house get so bad with cleanliness that she gets evicted, and then starts peeing on herself and other total decompensation indicators, all while screaming with rage that people should come and help her...but not take her to any institution, or call the police, or have her in a group home.

Probably the pinnacle: how many disability activists does it take to change a light bulb? Trick question, they'll just sit in the dark.

She tries to get other people to do her laundry and dishes, claims her "skin is burning off" and her lymph is draining out. What actually seems to be happening is extreme skin picking.

In April and May she has a claimed suicide attempt every week or so. No joke.

But she'd been talking like this for a long time.

She was obsessed with the idea that no one was "checking on her" when she "disappeared" from Twitter, except she didn't ever actually disappear.

However, she also tells us in the same breath sometimes that police are there for wellness checks so much they're on a first-name basis.

So "please check on me, why does no one check on me" and "why do people keep sending police to check to make sure I'm alive and not hurting myself" just never add up in her head. Not once.

It'd be a hell of a cautionary tale for Victoria to think about: you can be such a one-way pit of need, and such a choosy beggar, that you ensure there's no more sympathy or help from anyone, and everyone just lets you piss yourself in bed until you die.

A lot of these social justice "disabled" people rode high on 2020's "I'll do anything to stop you from getting sick or killing yourself" crusade and thought the good times would last forever, where do-gooders would come over and clean up their house for free. It's a different world now, and people's reserves are spent in more ways than one. No one wants to pretend crazies who should be in a home are actually capable of having their "own" apartment paid for by taxpayers and cleaned up by other taxpayers.

Covidmania created a whole group of mentally ill introverts who insisted they needed to be isolated, then descended into isolation madness. I imagine a lot of them will be following Erin's path soon. Victoria is running out of time to choose a different path, but this has always been slow suicide for her, the kind of suicide where her only real hope is that as many people as possible see her death as anyone's fault but her own.

Since there is no identified genetic marker for "hEDS" aka EDS type 3 (what most of these people claim, since the other forms of EDS all have more concrete biological markers that can be used for diagnosis), the bulk of the diagnosis rests on subjective, ambiguous physical signs, self-reported history, and, this is the big one, family history. Since it's hypothesized to be autosomal dominant like some of the other EDSes (the ones that definitely exist). So reporting that your family is plagued with mysterious ailments that could also be attributed to "hEDS" is par for the course.
